Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

What happened to being a ‘dandy’? That was quite big in the early 20th century. Some of the style symbolism was echoed in 1950s menswear.

I guess WWI forced a changing of priorities. Or did they all just run out of money, as per Beau Brummel?

Not over with my DD's friends. 3 girls, now boys with definitely 2 on testosterone. 1 boy now a girl, sibling of of one of girls now a boy! Quite a few other non binary.

DS is 2 years below and I haven't yet heard of any gender changes in his group, although 1 of his friend's younger sister says she is a boy.

Interesting discussion.

No idea really and I'm not in contact with enough teens/young adults in this demographic but as a butch lesbian it seems to be less a problem being a butch lesbian, for young women that way inclined. There's (slightly) less of an assumption that you must transition just because you are gender non-conforming / masculine presenting. Though there's a lot more chat about "masc" rather than butch, but broadly butch is seen as less of a dirty word than it was a decade ago. Likewise "lesbian".

It's all walking sticks and ADHD now.

Yup. The " queer disabled neurodivergent special-ethnicity at my work has just started using a cane.

I really hope you're right and it's over. Where I'm from in rural Ireland, we always tend to lag behind quite badly on the trend front so for me, we're not much past the peak but I can definitely see glimmers of sanity appearing amongst the young people I know. Sadly though, there are still far too many of them entrenched in this absolute nonsense.

This is where we are in Canada I think.

It was massive in my oldest kid's classes, slightly less in the next, and much less in the 16s year.

Even my older kids, though supposedly supportive of gender ideology, have both noticed that the kids their age who were trans identified were kind of messed up, and the ones who have continued are quite messed up and seem not to improve.

The people I see still super into are in their 20s and strongly wrapped up in appearing progressive, anime, and collecting other diagnoses.

I'm a primary school teacher, entering my 20th year, and I can only bring one child to mind...
It was a funny case though, this child started reception, recorded as male, but dressed in the girls uniform, the shoes, the dresses, beautiful long hair, the works. Self-identified as a boy when asked (not unreasonably) by the other children, but visually appeared as a girl. Had a name that could have gone either way, boy or girl. Think along the lines of Harley. Could get away with either.
He continued with the girls uniform all the way through primary school. The children just seemed to accept it.
Lost track of him when he went into Year 7, but I'd be interested to know how he's getting on.

I did a bit of supply in a certain school a couple of years ago. One of the teachers I was covering was - judging by the cartoon nameplate on the door - a man with a beard who claimed to be non-binary.

The kids dutifully referred to him as "Mx," but kept calling him "he". I gather that he was off with stress, given a comment made by a pupil. (I admit to pretending that I hadn't heard them.)

Yesterday, I saw a social media post where a parent complained about another member of staff at the same school, but a different department. The complaint was about a demand that the pupils acknowledge the teacher's non-binary status. There were umpteen comments from parents expressing concern over the teacher's presence in the school.

When I did supply at the school, I had one pupil lecturing me because I'd said "Ladies and gentlemen, you may go."

I pointed out that I'd checked the register beforehand and everyone in the class was listed as male or female - no one was listed as being non-binary or any other gender.

An argument between the boy and one of the girls ensued. He claimed that there were 64 genders. She told him he was being stupid.

Unfortunately this is the sad reality - I was reading anonymous accounts of detransitioners and the very community that indoctrinated them with harmfulness, turned their back on them, stalked, harassed and threatened them.

Such delightful people

Walking sticks, what do you mean?

Yes! What?!?! Someone else referred to walking stocks or was that a typo? I’ve known a wheelchair user who didn’t need one but walking sticks?

"But is anyone actually collecting any data more widely on what happened to the teens when they grew up? I suspect not."

@Sooose The Cass Review did attempt to follow up on those children who moved onto adult services. The clinics refused to share the data.

Read into that what you will...

Some of the clinics, eg the Tavistock, admitted that they had no data, and had furthermore not attempted to collect data even though they recognised the changes in the cohorts that were presenting themselves to the clinic. Nor were they doing any follow up work on young people who had been their patients and moved on. From a fairly consistent annual number of young boys to a huge increase of young people, not only boys, but unexpectedly a deluge of young girls being referred or self referring. Yet they did no investigation as to why this might be happening, or if the young people had other health issues such as anxiety, adhd, autism, bulimia, anorexia etc. They ticked the box that said trans, lied about the effects of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones and hung those children out to dry.

If even the Tavistock couldn't be bothered to keep the records of the young people it had been instrumental in transitioning, I doubt very much that anyone has. And I think that would have been simple medical data about side-effects from the drugs used, rather than anything more in-depth.

I did not even mention Mermaids.

I think the mother who illegally transitioned her son and then had him castrated on his sixteenth birthday may have been Susie Green, who was CEO of mermaids, hence the confusion?

@Sooose healthcare professionals are trying to get research and help in place- Elaine Miller ( specialist physio ) and colleague Prof Ruth Parry have recently completed a study on the “Unwanted Effects of Transgender Related Hormones and Gender Surgery on Urinary and Sexual Functioning” https://genderblog.net/gender-surgerys-incontinence-problem/. I think it’s going to take a while for research studies on harms to make it through the rainbow ceiling.

MN at one time, when I was a lurker, was so strong and steadfast in opposing this harmful agenda but I have noticed a distinct watering down on that stance. Much like they have a strong group of usual suspects who come in to almost deflect and distract from any issues pertaining to illegal migration and a correlation with certain attitudes to white working class girls.

Absolutely no coincidence at all.

Yes. I guess this thread is still here because it is Sunday. Perhaps the usual disrupters are still in bed and there are no moderators on Sundays.
It is probable that the thread will be gone by tomorrow.

Well the law and therefore schools’ policy has changed. School staff aren’t allowed to just adopt different pronouns or names now . It has to come from senior management with parental agreement. Perhaps that’s why it is less obvious now?

I know of a couple of ex students who have “transitioned back” (if that’s the right way to put it) in adulthood

I don’t have clear views on the subject and sit somewhat pathetically on the fence but I did think from the start that the link with autism needs A LOT more research.

Sooose · Yesterday 13:07

The trans thing is still alive and kicking in my neck of the woods! I can think of about 8 amongst my children's friends, aged 15-16. Then a few more among my own friends - their children. It has been a confusing time with all the changes in medical provision. Such a good thing that medical transition cannot start in puberty anymore. Some will grow out of it. It's a delicate issue that has been made worse by the polarisation of views that the internet is so good at. I hope eventually it will be seen that the pro-trans groups (trans activists) have preyed on children online in a similar way that the social media companies have.

If society manages to have a proper grown up conversation around this we might actually be able to help these young people figure out what is true for each of them.

I have no knowledge of what is happening to those who were trans as teenagers and are now in their 20s. Any circumstantial evidence is likely to be from such a small sample as to be not statistically significant. But is anyone actually collecting any data more widely on what happened to the teens when they grew up? I suspect not.

Best friend is head of sixth form at a large state school. She was telling me last weekend that they’ve gone from 5-6 kids in her year group for the last @10 years who changed name and pronouns to none this year (for the first time since 2016 I think). I was hoping this meant it was on the decrease.

The only kids I see being mutilated appear from a certain middle class background.

I wasn’t making light of people being affected by those deviants I was talking about the trans kids, very rarely from poor socioeconomic backgrounds.

Many of those kids are in care, are victims of sexual abuse, are the potentially gay children of homophobic parents. Still not all rich.

Is that why certain areas of mumsnet were subject to regular deletions at one time because of “ wrong think”?

@DestituteDesperate not just middle class kids, if you look at the characteristics of children referred to the Tavistock gender clinic there were many with social factors including those in care

Amazing thank you - in my area it’s all the middle class children overwhelmingly female that are trans.

I am glad to be informed about how widespread and nefarious the agenda is that’s affecting far more children.

funnily enough, in adulthood it seems to be perverts all using this agenda to gain access to women and children.

Funny how the left are so pro trans but say nothing on the Epstein files which repeatedly highlighted how much they wanted to push this agenda, things that make you go hmm.

WonderfulSmith · Yesterday 13:01

In my opinion there have always been trans people, just like there have always been autistic people and gay people but they have generally not been acknowledged by society.

However, in recent years teenagers have gone through the usual teenaged anxiety of feeling they don’t fit, they are misunderstood or feeing something is different and turned to the internet. There they have found groups who have explained their feelings away as being trans, and they have agreed. Suddenly you are in a group, you have friends, grown ups take you seriously and people change the way they treat you. You can go on marches and join clubs. If when you are older you realise that this wasn’t how you really felt then it’s very hard to back down.
This isn’t to say that all teens are making it up, or to say that trans people don’t exist but that some young people can get very caught up in it all.
