Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

What was this in response to?

Did you not read the original post? OP clearly states they don’t have social media.

I have no issue with genuine trans people- the two older adults i have met were just normal everyday people. No unusual clothes, it wasn't a big deal, they seemed pretty content and just wanted to be included without a fuss.

Whereas the trans young people I know are all AuDHD, all have severe mental health issues, all wear really way out clothes that draw as much attention as possible and all have a range of non specific medical concerns/disabilities. They are also all high social media users and seem to have identities formed only about their trans and disability needs, getting a huge amount of positive feedback from total strangers online. Sharing how unwell they are. How the world is against them etc. It is really sad as there doesn't seem to be any parenting attempt to balance these views.

Re trans kids - before this was even a "thing", my DC had a boy in his reception class who adored wearing dresses. His parents and teachers were completely fine with it (mostly ignoring it tbh), he was an ordinary looking boy but as soon as he arrived at school he would head for a dressing up corner, put on a princess dress and wear it all day. All kids just took it as a completely normal thing (as kids do). Then, at home time, would take it off and go home. His family moved away but I wonder what he is doing now. Was he trans? He never said he was a girl, he just loved dresses.

Reception kids are tiny. One of my sons loved dress up at that age - Bob the builder, buzz lightyear, captain America, tutus, witches, princesses. All out meant was a was a small child who enjoyed imaginative play.
It was when let toys be toys and let clothes be clothes were both a thing.

I've just had to Google. I admit to not having heard of it, but I think you're referring to the Southern Poverty Law Center in the U.S., based on the Wikipedia article that came up?

Yes, they were funding the white supremacists with money they had been given to fight racism. They also persuaded white supremacists who wanted to leave, to stay.

Under 18s have never been allowed to medically transition. Please don’t opine on something you know nothing about.

We have had at least one male person with a transgender identity confirm on MN FWR that they received puberty blockers as an under 18 year old.

We have had at least one male person with a transgender identity claim on MN FWR that they received puberty blockers as an under 18 year old. There were many inconsistencies with his story. I didn't believe his claim about PBs.

Fair enough.

He has built a life being 'a trans elder' though based on that back history from GIDS. It is very concerning that this man has put himself in a position where he counsels 'young people' on transition.

What was just as alarming or more alarming, is what he would tell teenagers or 'young people' about not disclosing their sex category to potential sex partners. I do believe he was in those roles and clearly had no fucking idea about safeguarding children or vulnerable people.

I think tolerated, rather than facilitated, is more accurate. I still think the decision to appoint him as a NED is wild.

I hear you re Canada et al, but the bar is in hell, it couldn't be any lower and I don't think the 'yeah but it could be worse...' is helpful. Of course this will depend on which side of the fence one sits 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I agree. The fact that we are slightly better here than in Australia and Canada is very small comfort. JW was appointed NED of MN in 2016 and of GLP in 2021. I know nothing else about him, but it does seem that there is a conflict of interest there.

Funny you mention this, the odd MTF I’ve seen in my local shopping centre, late 40s or 50s, again, looking for attention. Behaving rather brash and then staring to see if anyone takes the bait.

I remember I worked with someone that I thought was a conspiracy theorist who insisted some people are paid to take on certain activist roles in society. Usually to illicit a negative reaction so that it can be used to paint everyone as a bigot etc. I was very dismissive but the more I see…

Having lived with the T family member I can confirm it's mainly people wanting a fight who don't go about their business privately. My DD had a drag queen friend who under all the 'girlfriend shit' was actually quite nasty.
Nobody took any notice of cross dressing showbiz people. Danny la Rue, Lilly Savage etc.
Even my military father was very kind to the celebrity cross dresser who was from his village.
Personally I think the Stonewall input changed everything. Gays and lesbians were frequently assaulted and you all know the rest.

OTOH MN has steered a very difficult course through allowing a discussion that has been banned from practically everywhere else and has seen women cancelled, losing their jobs, being dragged through employment tribunals, being threatened with rape and murder and in some cases actually assaulted by trans identifying men and even being charged with contempt of court by not referring to the man who raped them as "she".
They capitulated to the so called feminists who demanded a separate feminist board where the gender identity topic was banned. They did ban a poster who was an expert on safe guarding who raised safe guarding concerns. So it has been a bit tricky, but MN has generally facilitated discussion. Apart from Scotland, the UK is generally in a better place than Canada and Australia, for example.

Credit where it’s due mumsnet has always been the only place you can sensibly be critical of this issue (without it coming from a religious fanatic or nasty angle) People forget how “woke one” was but you’d be banned on facebook or twitter for saying anything like this. Now on twitter you can say whatever you want and Facebook is even more lenient.
And don’t even get me started on irl conversations

There were two men dressed as women wandering about M&S in Princes Street, Edinburgh one time last year. Both rather tall, even for men. One looked to be in his 50s, judging by the combover and grey hair. (It was dyed purple, but had worn off.)

My impression was that they were looking to be noticed, given their body language.

I haven't seen any young MtF recently. The former pupil that I mentioned in a previous post was at uni when he began to transition. He must be in his late 40s or early 50s by now.

I watch the documentary about Ruby Franke and was so shocked. The footage of her son at the doorbell made me cry.

I couldn't stand her DH either - he made out he had been brainwashed but he was awful and hugely creepy.

Not heard of the family you mentioned, but my DD used to watch a family vlog when she was fairly little and I was always asking her to switch it off. The parents seemed so fake and all they did was encourage hugely capitalist/ wasteful and polluting behaviour by opening tons of toys or making huge vats of slime. I agree there's likely to be some other shit that'll come out about families who (dys)function this way.

Oh I know who he is. Unfortunately I know more about GLP than I would like. I just had no idea he was a MN NED.

Yet again, MN sorely disappoints. If it wasnt for all of the wonderful FWR members, I'd have left here long ago - and if not, this would definitely have sealed the deal.

I think years ago I used to see more older guys dressing as women, not often but when you did see am man in women's clothing out and about it would be an older man. I have two elderly male neighbours who started dressing as women fulltime during the pandemic and I see them about quite often. There is a younger trans identified man maybe early 20's locally to me I see about he seems to be quite mentally unwell though.

At the cinema the other day I saw a family; a woman, her child ( wee girl) and a man dressed almost identically to his wife and he was a massive lump of dude. It always seems to be the biggest blokes who want to be women for some reason. Anyway I did wonder when he sprung his "transition" on his poor wife, did he wait till she was pregnant or a new mum as they so often seem to?

However when I am out and about in the city I rarely see older men it's usually quite young guys.

Kalalily · Yesterday 16:52

For those interested in this topic, but without firsthand experience of it, let me tell you that it is truly heartbreaking. We, who have known our children inside out since birth, have been dismissed by so-called gender experts who recommend medical transition on the basis of one or two 45 minute appointments – even when autism and trauma (including SA) are evident. It is without doubt the biggest medical scandal of our time and I think it says something that Nick Wallis, the Post Office scandal journalist, has been posting more and more about it in recent times.
If you want to understand gender dysphoria, look at anorexia. I have witnessed first hand both conditions and they are almost identical and for the life of me I cannot understand why their treatment is not also aligned.

The eldest is 22 with two kids. Im not sure who is the youngest to have children out of the ones that originally claimed they were teans but then decided they weren't.

However some of yhem have gone to uni, some have apprentices or at college
Also some of our other young people that haven't had teans issues are also parents.

To be fair 22 appears to be an average to have a couple of children in the area I live. I do understand this is against the national average.

I only work with them until they are about 17 and half but we still see most of our ex kids around so we know how they are doing.

This is what worries me, I don’t think there’s been any proper data collected on the cohort who went through this at its peak. How many are struggling with mental health or physical health issues and just been forgotten about while society moves on.

Medical transition has been banned in the uk for under 18s thank god but I’ve argued with some trans activists online who’ve tried gaslighting me that “no 13 year old was ever given puberty blockers anyway” when I know for a fact they were.
Are we just going to be gaslit that this never happened?

The Cass Review recommended a data linkage study which would have followed up on the patients who were at the NHS Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS). This was delayed as the Adult gender services refused to cooperate but I believe it is taking place now. This study is a priority and the puberty blockers trial should be postponed until the data linkage study results are known.

Ah the gaslighting is now on my very own thread. Because the 13 -15 year olds I knew on puberty blockers counting down the days to 16 so they could go on full blown cross sex hormones didn’t exist.

I have worked in children's services for over 40 years in different roles but always with young people and families that needed support.

We had no children claiming to be trans until around until 2019 when we had 3 within 4 months on our case load. The following years it increased significantly. At one point out of a case load of 127 between the team we had 34 claiming to be trans. All but one were female claiming they were male.

From the moment the child said they were trans we had to refer to them with their new name, God forbid if we slipped up and used their 'dead name' and write our records up referring to them with their new name and gender even if the parents protested. We noticed the numbers we got of young people claiming they were trans started to decline around late 2024. We have no trans kids on our case load at the moment

All those that we had previously have reverted back to their original gender and name. Every single one. Most have kids of their own now.

These children were given every support to chahge their gender within the legal framework, their views were respected and so on.
We live in a mid size town. Most of the teens know each other, if not there is always a connection with the teens .
For me it seemed to be a fad. The only observation I can offer is all the children were either diagnosed with autism or adhd or they didnt quite fit in with their peers some how and were never quite in with the in crowd and were quite awkward with their behaviour.
I never specifically worked with children that had autism as such, all the children were in main stream or alternative provision.

I know on the feminist board the trans issue is still a live one and I am only speaking from personal expierence and not disputing other peoples views.

Incidentally we only had one furby,I think they're called. He had cat ears, cat collar and tail and meowed every time we spoke to him.The other kids couldn't quite comprehend it. The kids at his school erent bothered but at our place the children are from different schools in ghe area. His mother encouraged his behaviour. I think it started to stop when the children who stayed with us ( semi residential) took the piss and asked if he needed de fleaing when it was bath and shower time. This kid is doing ok and has now finished college and the cat kit has long hone!

Most have kids of their own now - how old are they? I thought teenage pregnancies were in the decline - are this group more likely to pregnant too?
