Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

They are likely not on SM due to the massive ignorance and prejudice from people like you.

I have two relatives who are trans. It's not a fad, nor a mental illness and one was born in the 70s abd the other has been trans for almost ten years.

They live their lives quietly and with dignity. HTH.

I'd quite like to live my life with privacy and dignity too, thanks.

Unfortunately people who think you can magically change sex, want to use me to validate their identity. They don't want to 'just pee'. They could do this in third spaces but they go out of their way to protest about this not being acceptable

At this point due to the lack of respect, I have no time for this type of demand and the behaviour demonstrated when the word 'no' is used.

Bizarre. And also Scotland which is still more captured than England. Not least bizarre because all children in care homes have their own bedrooms already in England so I can't imagine a scenario where they don't - but please bear in mind the number of looked after children in care homes is very small compared to the wider looked after population.

I’ve actually noticed a few young people with diamond encrusted walking sticks and with toys attached to them, assumed they had issues with their legs. You’re telling me that’s a thing now?

Adhd was pretty big even when I was at school though

Definitely a thing.

Crikey, you under a rock? It’s everywhere 😂. Go on the feminism board, they’re still raging

But not so many new candidates.

I’m a GP. In about 2018-2019 I had about 20 girls all from the same year, same school come to see me as they were “trans” and wanting referral. It was definitely a social phenomenon. I only see one every few months now. Funnily enough the FTM vastly outnumbered the MTF I saw.

Loads of adults querying ADHD now tho, I see an about 8-10 a month.

Global report on 'LGBT' has some insights on 'trans'.

The large majority of people who say they are trans identify as non binary. And almost all of them are white.

I'd say that the phase of gender issues being fashionable has passed. Its very boring now, and the BBC's weird drag queen obsession is about as edgy as Benny Hill. Teens mostly eye roll at it.

Unfortunately vulnerable children are still being embroiled in it, well funded organisations like Stonewall, LGBTYS, Gires, Mermaids still exist and rely on maintaining the narrative to keep going.

Plastic surgeons and private healthcare set ups are still making money and its still seen in industry reports as a growth area with considerable profits to be harvested.

Care experienced children, those with abuse histories and ACEs, those with ASDs, and those who will go on to become lesbian and gay adults are still most at risk.

Its not over yet, although it bloody well should be.

My niece (nearly 20), autistic, went through a dilemma for a few years, was she she, they etc. her dress style changed but not masculine. Being autistic, she does mask a lot. So she was simply copying her friends at the time. She is now firmly a she.

My nephew (18), has a MTF friend. I believe they are on medication.

From what I observe around where I live, it seems to be a type of person, if that makes sense. My other nephews (on husbands side) similar age group, not autistic, completely different interests and hobbies. They have no friends that have become trans or non binary.

GoldTie · Yesterday 10:15

I have a friend who is in the heart of it as a professor in a woke US university. He said it has really calmed down in the last couple of years, from having about 8 trans people in a class and lots of pronoun focus, to just one or two trans people.

I just had a look at how David Tennant’s son is now identifying. I always wondered how hard it would be for him to backtrack and just be a ‘boy’ given his parents’ intense focus on him being trans (non-binary) from the age of something like 9. His son is now about 14, has changed his name to something gender neutral, has long hair and fairly feminine clothing (in a Harry Styles type way). So I guess he has found a way through.

We have two FTM in the secondary i work in

endofthelinefinally · Yesterday 10:12

We still have the upcoming puberty blockers trial in which children are going to be given drugs already known to cause awful damage.
The new unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is currently spending hundreds of thousands of £ of NHS funding on cutting off the breasts of bairly adult girls.
I personally find it really distressing because all the research that has been done (with great difficulty) has shown that the majority of these children and young people have comorbidities and mental health conditions for which they need help.

Neverstopwondering · Yesterday 10:11

It's over. Thank God.

Now everyone's moved on to being special via ADHD diagnoses.

And autism

As a mother of an autistic adult son that was diagnosed in the 90s when he was 4 and couldn't speak or socalise. I am a bit pissed at the latest fad we must not question. Yet I have to not comment on grow arse adults and their children paying someone to tell them what they want to hear. Then taking up valuable tax payers resources that are needed by kids and adults that really need them to function in society or education on the most basic level.

HouseBee · Yesterday 10:11

@Lentilcakes , I know of one trans teen who transitioned during covid and yes I agree that time really affected them (on MH pov).

The others though are a few years pre covid.

Id be very careful to say ‘it’s all lockdowns’ because that trend existed much before that.

Loghabit · Yesterday 10:09

One of my friend's has a AC going through it at the moment. He's 23 and he has some serious mental health problems. He won't see her in person and everytime she speaks to him it's as if he's being told what to say by someone else - a forum - AI, she can't tell. It's a nightmare for them all. No happy story there.

Raging about what? Raging about young people who were caught up in this mess? Raging about people who are now regretting getting surgery/puberty blockers?
You do know that because they raged they shed light on this issue? I would suggest that the raging was a very very good thing..

I found mumsnet when I was a new Mum, needing support with a baby with special needs. Fifteen years have passed, and I now come for the raging. I’m raging about this issue IRL, and raging on MN. Long may we rage (until this is all in the rear view mirror).

Secretsquirrel2 · Yesterday 10:06

This might be a long post so I'm sorry for that.
However not as sorry as I was when my 14 years old daughter told me she was trans (FTM).

If you've heard my story before it was under another name and I changed it because of the abuse I got on here. It was 8 years ago.
I was shocked and devastated. She talked of surgery and had changed her name at school.
Sadly she had been attacked at 12 and although she had therapy she refused to name her attacker. My pink loving, curvy girl spent her life online with God knows who. We tried everything.
I knew nothing about this world but had employed two mtf old school trans women many years ago. I didn't believe this was her path. My BFF is bisexual and provided the only support I got. My daughter and I were shunned in our posh market town.
We had to change her school a number of times due to bullying (even from teachers) and she ended up at the local 'dump'. It was the making of her, nothing to see here. I will forever be grateful to them. They just took it with good humour. Sadly the school didn't have a six form and we had to move home to access one. Initially it was good then COVID hit. It nearly destroyed her. More counseling was organized and all along she wanted surgery. I refused.
At just shy of her 18th birthday someone tried to attack her again (for all of her baggy clothes and mullet she was still very pretty). She tried to take her own life. Her thinking was she wasn't safe.
She also thought I didn't support her to be safe. If she'd had surgery she would be safe etc.
I gave up work to look after her and we both took a year out. She appeared to recover enough to start university. Ho hum that was a challenge as it was so positively pro lgbtq+ rights I feared for her mental health. And how right I was. She changed university in year 2 to go to one nearer to home however I was concerned as even the university chaplain had told me off for using her 'dead name', wtf!
She managed that year but you were either in or out and she had started to be more interested in politics and women's rights.
I'd had a major illness at this time and things looked very bad. She stayed at home last year to nurse me.
She has an older brother who had never 'played the game' and he had always told me to just wait, its a fad etc
We have many of her friends to our home, some gay, sone straight and just one still FTM. She's had hormone therapy and does have a receding hairline. Their business is their business and they're all 23. However she doesn't keep in touch with any of the LGBT crowd from University. She finds them dull.
Earlier this year she asked me for some feminine clothes. I was bloody ecstatic. I wanted to write on here and tell the people who had been kind to me. I was just a heartbroken mother who had no idea what to do. I nearly lost my daughter and I was so grateful for the women who reached out.

What 18 year olds do is difficult to control however I know she had been groomed on the Internet by her 'friends' in the USA. Their coercive behaviour is truly shocking. Glitter families, threats of suicide and lots of sexual explotation. These people? Nearly always men. Have they had surgery? Of course not.
I do believe this is waning and I'm so grateful it is. What my family went through was devastating. We're a strong unit but it did test us.
I hope no one else has to see their lives explode like that. My daughter missed her teenage years and many educational opportunities. This craze was all consuming.

Calm down 😂 where did I say it wasn’t. Point proven

Lol emojis when we're discussing child abuse? A point may have been proven, but it's not the one you think it is.

Hopefully it’s over, ridiculous, damaging and dangerous nonsensense that it is.

The trans kids I know are still trans.
They were teens my own dcs knew. Or they met them at Uni. Very much the teens that would have transitioned in the time you mentioned.

UnitaBath · Yesterday 10:02

We have a 16 year old trans-nephew. Royally fucked up if you ask me, especially as their mum insisted on taking them regularly to the Tavistock centre for several years when they were younger. They were all for pushing the trans thing and no one thought to address their autism instead.

They now spend their time in their room or hanging around with people in their 50's/60's.

No life for a 16 year old imo.

I love that you're apparently disgusted by your daughter having body hair, but not by the fact you let her down by not having her neurodivergence assessed and diagnosed at an earlier age 😂

I agree about the body hair emoji but blaming someone for not managing to get their child’s neurodivergence diagnosed early is really unkind and below the belt.
It can be really really difficult, especially if your child doesn’t have the type of presentation that screams ND to gatekeepers and if you don’t have money to pay privately.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · Yesterday 10:00

I kept my mouth shut while all my friends went full bore on trans ideology. I could see the correlation with neurodivergence and/or childhood trauma plus Covid isolation at a very vulnerable time and have privately been critical of what felt like a trend among children desperate to be heard.

Also stories of parents of young kids using they/them pronouns or being the kid being encouraged to think of themselves as the opposite gender if they said they didn’t feel like their birth gender.

And I don’t quite know how to articulate this but there is a section of the alternative/queer/ND community who are very forthright in their views and others in that community (or outside it) might not want to speak out about any concerns they have for fear of being cancelled or ostracised or targeted.

I for one will be glad if this is really dying down. It has felt like temporary insanity with people going along with it for the reasons I mention above. Of course there are genuine trans people. No issue with that whatsoever, or anyone’s sexuality or lack thereof. But a sudden huge wave of young people identifying as the opposite gender and we’re just supposed to go along with it? Nope.

Kingdomofsleep · Yesterday 10:00

Hippodrome · Yesterday 09:04

Yeah I was 16. Probably why I’m interested in this particular subject because I saw with my own eyes young kids transitioning and then had a child myself I was actually irrationally worried about it back at the peak when there were stories about kids being taken into care because their parents weren’t affirming their identity.

Seems incredibly silly now as the whole trend has fell off a cliff from what I can see

Don't feel silly for being worried. I was worried too, as a teacher, about children being "affirmed" into a position of no return. And very worried for other children being forced to comply with social affirmation (calling male classmates girls, etc). I really hated having to comply with school policies that I thought were damaging. (And yes, i made myself unpopular by flagging my concerns repeatedly).

I don't know if the trend itself is entirely over, but with KCSIE this year I think the trend for schools affirming social transition is soon to be over.

RowsOfFlowers · Yesterday 09:59

I bloody hope so (Millennial here).
