AIBU to question people claiming they would happily pay more tax?

Yet another thread about should there be tax rises or spending cuts, and invariably you get a host of people coming out saying they are happy to pay more. Well you can https://www.gov.uk/guidance/voluntary-payments-donations-to-government

I’m pretty sure what they actually mean is I am happy to pay a tiny amount more on the understanding others will pay a lot more and then I’ll see the benefit. If that assumption is wrong why aren’t all these people saying they’re happy to pay more doing it?

Voluntary payments / donations to government

I wonder how this poor lady feels about being lower priority than random men from Eritrea who come here illegally.

Former nurse living in a tent after council say she’s ‘not a priority’ for housing

Random men from Eritrea would get the same assessment for emergency housing, with the same rules applied, as a former nurse would. HTH.

That statement is factually incorrect - see IFS and OBR, two reliable sources of data https://ifs.org.uk/taxlab/taxlab-key-questions/how-do-uk-tax-revenues-compare-internationally, https://obr.uk/box/the-uks-tax-burden-in-historical-and-international-context/. Is there fake news circulating that gives this impression?

The tax burden is highest since the war under Labour.

On Scandinavian levels lower to mid earners here pay lower tax. Is that what you’re thinking of changing?

How many threads are you going to post this false equivalence on?

NotMajorTom · 06/09/2026 10:34

There’s a big difference between between being happy to pay a bit more, and being happy for the rates of tax to increase a bit.

most people saying they’re happy mean the latter. It’s about all (or some, but not one individual) contributing a bit more. That’s both fair, and makes a difference.

responding with that link to donate isn’t the clever win you think it is.

The problem is that the poorer third of the population are paying taxes they can't afford while the richest millionaires and billionaires eg are able to avoid tax by off-shoring, living abroad. Their investment income not taxed at all or not as much as earned income from the often essential work that the poorest have to do to survive.

We are ( as usual) over protecting the very rich. We need to tax the latter by insisting that if they want to keep their UK citizenship they need to contribute to this country. ( Reciprocal tax agreements for those working abroad can be accounted for.)

The US citizen living abroad must file a federal tax return and report their worldwide income to the Internal Inland Revenue no matter where they live in the world. Why do we not do the same?

It is counter productive to insist that the poorest eg the young, those on just the state OAP, or on precarious zero hours contracts (1 million at present) have to pay tax on money they would spend every penny of and therefore boost our economy while allowing the multi-millionaires/billionaires etc to horde or off shore.

No they were let down by the likes of Johnson and Farage who promised that Brexit would bring great prosperity (for them at least it has), so for once we had turkeys voting for Christmas.

That’s what I mean, you can’t see the impact of Labour’s NI policy when it’s clear. It was a tax on jobs.

I’m guessing because you voted Labour.

Somersetbaker · 06/09/2026 09:57

EasternStandard · 06/09/2026 09:40

Well yes only those very loyal Labour can’t see the impact.

All the posts I’ve put are clear, young people have been let down by the current gov. It’s cost them jobs.

I’m interested in the people who don’t click the link to pay more but when there’s a discussion about cuts simply say they are happy to pay more. Not the people who say “I think we should all pay more” or the people who say I think the rich should pay more. The people who say I am happy to pay more but don’t.

They seem to think them saying they are happy to pay gives weight to their argument, but they simply aren’t doing it.

Why would I pay more without a policy that sets out where it would be going?
I'd happily pay a good chunk more if there was a commitment to making adult social care free, for example - I think the idea that people have to use savings to pay someone to come provide personal care in their home abhorrent.

I wouldn't pay more to the general pot on the off chance that might happen, knowing that it could just be used on defence spending and buying weapons.

Sorry-my post was intended for @Jollygreygiantesswho thinks that Ukraine is the only country entitled to foreign aid.

Tbf that poster said Ukraine militarily as they are a buffer for the Uk against Russia. I don’t think there was any suggestion aid should go to Ukrainian individuals.

If you really believe that then you can't complain about young people being lazy if they can't get a job.

There’s another thread here where people are talking about how not to pay iht/care fees. But probably the first to shout for a tax increase 🤷‍♀️

It’s not funny really. Labour’s NI policy has caused job losses, especially for young people.

Funny how the same people who complain that taxes stop businesses employing people also think it's easy for young people to just go out and get a job.

And of course stop all benefits except to pensioners! Because no-one under 65 is actually sick or disabled. And there are no associated future costs to children growing up in poverty or not getting the help they need in school.

You can try explaining a third time. But you won’t get through. It’s not that people don’t understand-it’s that they love being able to snipe and evade responsibility.

Who is evading responsibility?

CurlewKate · 06/09/2026 08:57

Didimum · 05/09/2026 20:47

No, because the vast majority of people quality that they would be happy to pay more if it would lead to an improvement of services. You have your very own thread right here to demonstrate that. Paying more as a single individual would not achieve that qualifier.

Do I need to explain it a third time?

I’d make all benefits means tested. Winter fuel allowance I find particularly galling - paying tax so that wealthy pensioners can overheat their under-occupied large houses while thousands of families live in B&Bs in the middle of a housing, fuel and cost of living crisis. Absolutely obscene.

SassyLemonFish · 06/09/2026 08:05

Jollygreygiantess · 05/09/2026 17:41

I would agree with this ^ 100%.
No way on God's green earth would I want to pay any more tax. I am up to Pussy's Bow seeing how my money is squandered.
We need to cut Foreign Aid to the bone. At present we give to Ukraine, Afghanistan, Ethiopea, Syria & Somalia.I don't have a problem with Ukraine - we need to support them as, unfortunately, they are a buffer between us and Russia.
Ethiopia was never colonised by Britain. Syria gained independence in 1945, Somalia in 1960. We should never have got involved with Afghanistan and certainly shouldn't be paying for it now.
Benefits need to be cut, (I don't class Pensions as a "benefit" btw as most of those folks will have made some contribution in their lifetime.)
Those young able-bodied NEWTs (not in education, work or training) need to have all benefits cut so they are forced to get off their scrawny a*s and get a job. NI contributions for employers need to be cut to encourage more job creation.
Please don't tell me there are no jobs because where I am there are lots of jobs in the hospitality sector, cleaners, sales persons, hotel staff, bingo callers, pub work - all jobs that don't require any qualifications.
Migrants need to be put in basic accommodation, warehouses on camp beds, no free mobile phones, no free dentistry, prison-style food, do their own laundry. that should stop the pull factors.
Well, that's made a start - are you listening Andy?

MumofCandR · 05/09/2026 19:53

Yes - look at most of Europe and you can see how higher taxation benefits public services, but the UK is always about lowest common denominator. And it's not how macro economics work - years of tax reduction and reduction in public spend has lead to where we are today, austerity anyone? Increased taxation and public expenditure feeds into improved economic outlook, it has always been thus that expenditure stimulates economic growth which helps all citizens.

Our taxes are the highest since the war, and already put us at scandinavian levels.

SassyLemonFish · 06/09/2026 07:59

I have a good salary. ‘Broad shoulders’ according to Burnham, which apprently means I have a responsibility to pay even more tax. Trouble is, I already pay lots of tax and NI to support ‘others’. I’d really rather use these apparently ‘broad shoulders’ to support my own children.

bozo123 · 05/09/2026 20:55

You guys should read “we need to tax billionaires”. I’d be content for the richest of us to pay the same rate as the rest of us to be fair, not too keen on them just deciding to opt out.
