AIBU to ask for advice on how to overturn a school decision - quickly

What can I do to overturn a school decision - quickly? It is regarding mobile phones. The school has introduced a no phones at school policy. If a teacher is on a journey home and sees a child on a phone, they will “chase them down the street and snatch it out of their hand” as it shows they had a phone in school.

There was a horrible and frightening incident fairly near school today. So whilst school were busying themself with catching children out for taking a blazer off at a bus stop or using a phone after school, my child was involved in something bloody terrifying. I’ve been up half the night. It should involve the police, but we are not going down that road and time would have been of the essence anyway. My husband was driving about a minute away from her at the time, happily oblivious. I’m shaken up, but also feel in an impossible situation.

This occurred close to school, with a couple of friends, in daylight with people nearby. Her journey also includes much larger elements where she’s on her own and secluded. I’m really fucking angry and revolted too (huge understatement) that the school have the power to dictate the removal of a tool for use outside of school, compromising my child’s safety.

As a bare minimum, I want a brick phone allowed in school - turned off, handed in, confiscated if used or seen - I don’t care. I want them to find a way that the other 97% of schools do, so that my child has access to a phone, even if it’s just a brick phone, should she need it out of school.

They have lots of draconian rules, appear very rigid and authoritarian. I can grit my teeth on those. I cannot grit my teeth on this one. It’s a very large academy, gives the impression so far that “we are always right and totally trustworthy” and others will have it wrong or lie. Please help. How best to approach a school that seems terrified of giving an inch, (whilst it simultaneously encroaches the fuck and takes miles) to get an outcome that will make my child safer out of school.

If you’ve read this far, please help. I also believe from what I’ve seen so far that if I raise this, the school will frequently check my daughter’s bag. I am willing to now break the rules on this, but obviously can’t keep replacing mobiles and she shouldn’t have to be punished by school for it either.

“Chase them down” Stop it!

Perhaps the teachers are being provided with roller skates and a lassoo. Then they can wrestle the children to the ground and grab the phone.

Oh stop, you are giving me flashbacks of home ed group meet ups 🤣🤣

I am still part of a couple of home ed Facebook groups and posts occasionally come up.

The most batshit one I saw this summer was people “thinking” of all the 5 year olds starting school this year, who will have to spend 6 hours a day sitting in one spot in silence, unable to make friends with the children around them. Hmmmmm. Not like any reception class I’ve ever seen!

The level of ignorance is worrying, for people who claim to be "educators" 😂!

That's a great idea. I'm sure the education budget could be stretched for this.

On reflection I think @NeverDropYourMooncup idea is more workable and the cash converters point could be considered entrepreneurial.

Sorry this did make me chuckle re the flashbacks. 🤣

She's also vegan, no issue with that, great but oh god the sanctimonious posts, and has that vegan habit of talking AT people and going straight for the aggression rather than talking TO people. She is a bit batshit, admittedly I think I hate follow her now almost as eye rolling entertainment, yes I know that isn't great either.

I worry about her children, especially if they have to join in with unpleasant and humiliating stunts, like the laughing outside the primary school.
I hope someone's checking on them.

Sad thing is, lot's of other home ed parents were bigging her up and encouraging her. It's awful, teaching children to mock other children for living a different lifestyle. And sitting around having a picnic isn't educational, school parents do that all the time.

MNLurker1345 · 05/09/2026 15:11

Now we have the honest truth. Thank you. I think we should go one step further because teachers are so over stretched. There should be a role created for a ‘chase and snatch’ officer. Educational Pay grade disclosed on appointment.

It could be a role that would suit a retired Olympian, like Usain Bolt. He could cover multiple schools at once.

That's a great idea. I'm sure the education budget could be stretched for this.

UnbeatenMum · 05/09/2026 15:32

Sorry to hear something awful happened to your child. I think lots of schools are still allowing dumb phones for travel purposes, I've just had to buy one for my DD, so there may be some potential for the school to rethink their position. It's really useful if a child can let you know if they've missed the bus or the bus didn't turn up or crashed or broke down etc etc.

Not without upset though. I was in some horrible situations where a phone to call my dad really would have helped me out. Adults were no good, they pretended not to see. If I could have got off the bus early and called him, I probably wouldn’t have been assaulted.

Oh my god, so I am currently recovering from an operation (hence my terrible phone addiction and being on this thread all day - I can’t get out of bed), and a friend of mine is round to see me.

Anyway, was just discussing kids and phones with her and she reminded me about our blazer policy at school in the early 90s.

We had to wear them to and from school, and yes, if they saw us after school, the teachers would scream blue murder from their cars if we weren’t wearing them (super strict grammar).

We were yelled at a couple of times at the bus stop as we had taken them off in the summer.

My friends parents got called in Because she flipped the finger at the teacher when he saw her walking through town without her blazer on after school.

Absolutely fucking mental.

Weeellokthen · 05/09/2026 15:26

Fattypantss · 05/09/2026 09:58

Fucks sake, you know what I mean.

”We survived”. Whoop de fucking do. It’s a stupid argument.

I “survived” driving from Cornwall to Essex at 18, with nothing but a map that I had to keep pulling over to look at.

Now I just sit my phone on the dash board and it shows and tells me where to go.

I also survived many instances of being harassed by men on public transport while at school. If I could have got off at a busy stop and phoned my dad, it would have been a lot less terrifying.

Edited

But you DID survive. We humans are a resourcful lot, aren't we 😄

have you quoted the school policy verbatim on this one or is it your interpretation? It sounds very dramatic.

If the matter was that serious that you SHOULD have involved the police, and that you have been up most the night - then why didn't you involved the police? Especially if your child's safety was compromised so greatly.

I'm trying to work out the true severity, and to what extent you are being dramatic as indicated by your language used.

Can't imagine being able to sneak that one into the PE Department's contracts, somehow, even if Mr Thatcher, St Smugwort's Associate Assistant Head and Principal Phone Snatcher does have a certain something.

Could possibly create a School Prefect+ role for the Rugby Team with a reward trip to Cash Converters for the most phones collected in a term, I guess, though.

All the teachers on this post are lying unfortunately, I and every other teacher in the country spent Tuesday INSET doing a special high speed driving training course so that we can in fact chase down the students using the bus passes on their phone at 7pm. We also have pepper spray for those that don’t willingly comply so I suggest when we catch them they hand it over first time.

😂😂😂😂

I told her it was incredibly disappointing. But she always posts fanatical nonsense, and I'll probably get crucified for saying this but the "teachers chasing children up the road and forcing the phone out of their hands" sounds like something a Home Ed parent would say to their child to frighten them out of wanting to go to school, or to guilt parents.

Yes, it's wild, isn't it? She sounds a bit weird though.

Starlight7080 · 05/09/2026 15:16

The school need to invest in the pouches. My kids school have them and they have worked well. But as soon as they leave school and they are unlocked then the school should have no say when it comes to using a mobile.
Its up to the child's parents/guardian if they have a mobile.

Rockpapersissors · 05/09/2026 15:16

Mooselander · 05/09/2026 08:40

Sorry but no. Your kid doesn’t need a phone, whether that’s a smartphone or a brick.

If you don’t like the school rules then pull your kid out and go elsewhere.

Do not agree with this at all!! Kids out on their own above the age of 11 need their own phones so that we as parents can keep them safe (track them/calls when they are in situations). How do you keep track of your kids? My kids have always known we are a call away if they need us.

Which teachers are volunteering (after school so not a mandatory part of the job) to chase children down in the street and steal their property? 🤔 Sorry, I don't believe this is a real school policy.

It's made up tosh

Oh god, I went to a few “not back to school” picnics that were just awful. The terrible things they would say about schools and children who went to them. I can completely imagine that happening.

I liked home educating for the time we did it, but I tended to steer clear of a lot of other home educating families, some were just unhinged. I was dropped like a hot stone when we sent ds to school!

That's sad!. I think Home Ed is a wonderful path and the right one for many, but some get silly and fanatical about it.
