I had a large (okay, very large) glass of wine.
Am I okay to take Nytol in 3 or 4 hours? Ice been going through a terrible bout of insomnia and really need to be operational tomorrow:(

I've taken Nytol with wine lots of times. I was fine but it never had any negatives for me, never felt groggy etc, even without wine.

Thats reassuring! Ive never had priblems with nytol either, always feel great upon waking

I’m on Mirtazapine also take Kalms one a night as well or I don’t sleep. Sometimes after alcohol never wait 4 hours it’s usually about an hour always been fine. So I’m sure you taking Nytol will be ok.

Magnesium if the issue is waking up early hours.

Magnesium is nowhere near as reliable for that (for me) as Nytol

Nytol doesn’t contain Promethazine.
Promethazine is available over the counter in UK in Night Nurse and Sominax.
My DS is prescribed it.

The poster didnt say Nytol containes promethazine.

Just looked it up. No you should not take the Nytol after wine @Sc0tlandbye SORRY. I shouldn't have given that frivolous advice without knowing about it properly... Best to give the Nytol a swerve tonight. The big glass of wine should help you sleep. Smile

Here's what I got when I googled it. I have asked for my other post to be removed. xx

No, you should not drink a glass of wine before taking NYTOL.

Why Mixing is Unsafe

  • Increased Drowsiness: Both alcohol and Nytol slow down your brain and central nervous system. Mixing them makes you much more sleepy and dizzy than normal.
  • Slow Breathing: Combining alcohol and sleep aids can cause dangerous breathing problems, making your breath very slow and shallow.
  • Risk of Falls: The heavy sedation can cause confusion, poor balance, and a high risk of falling, especially if you get up during the night.
  • Overwhelming the Liver: Your liver processes both substances. Taking them together puts extra stress on your body.

Promethazine is available over the counter and is what they use in hospitals for insomniac patients now Zopiclone et al are being phased out. You need a 40-50mg dose for sleep. You are welcome!

I took that for pregnancy sickness. I woke up at 2am needing a wee and felt like a zombie. I remember trying not to bang into the door!
A family friend took it years back when it was used for hay fever before modern non drowsy anti histamines . She went to see a show and woke up at the end 🤣
So can confirm it makes you sleep!

I find promethazine really useful for sleep - just makes me drowsy enough that I drop off again if I wake up. But I definitely don't need 50 mg! I find 12.5mg is plenty, and if I take a full 25mg then I struggle to get going the next day. I usually buy mine from an online pharmacy - I tend to do a fairly chunky order once or twice a year with this, own brand Gaviscon, thrush medication, a giant batch of ibuprofen , hydrocortisone cream, and anything else that irritates me buying from boots due to the price!

I’m pretty sure if one nytol mixed with a moderate amount of alcohol could kill you it would be in bold (or at least italics) somewhere in the leaflet.

I'm pretty sure that the the bit saying Do not drink alcohol on the leaflet and printed on the box is a bit of a clue.

Dryshampoofordays · 04/09/2026 21:27

I think mixing it will be fine (as a one off, probably not a good idea to make it a regular thing) unless you’re so worried about overdose that the anxiety wakes you in a panic! If sleep is a problem you really need to stop drinking for a while op, just one alcoholic drink can wreck your sleep

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/09/2026 21:27

Mixing anything that makes you drowsy with alcohol is a mistake.

Zopiclone for example mixed with alcohol can cause you to stop breathing in your sleep.

From the web: Dangers of Combining Nytol and Alcohol

  • Severe Drowsiness: Both substances make you sleepy. Together, they cause extreme sedation that makes it hard to wake up or stay alert.
  • Slowed Breathing: Both slow down brain function. Combining them can lead to shallow or troubled breathing, which is life-threatening.
  • Poor Coordination: You face a much higher risk of dizziness, confusion, and accidental falls.
PashaMinaMio · 04/09/2026 21:22

Don’t mix with alcohol.
See NHS guidance herewith.

I don’t know about the nytol but would a couple more glasses of wine not help you sleep?

Wine disrupts sleep and means you don’t get proper deep sleep making you more tired and less capable the next day. Alcohol is terrible for sleep. Those who think it helps are actually sedated not sleeping.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/09/2026 21:12

Sc0tlandbye · 04/09/2026 21:06

Unfortunately not.
I drop off to sleep in seconds. Its waking at 3am thats the problem and alcohol seems to just make it worse

Sorry to sound like a severe Nanny but exactly this - drinking alcohol at all if you have insomnia is a terrible idea. I’d fully give it up until you are not suffering from insomnia any more.

On your specific question, you will be fine! Take the Nytol if you think it’ll help.

Me too. Not died yet!

seventeenofsumday · 04/09/2026 21:09

This is literally a non issue op, a glass of wine won't cause any problems I'm absolutely certain 😂😂😂😂
