Child sleeps on a mattress on the floor

Floor bed fine, mines been in one since 12 months . Just a mattress does have a risk of mould but it really isn’t any of your business

Most posters agree it's not a problem, and only a few say otherwise, but the majority consensus is not the 'norm'? Okaaaaaaay.......

I had this as a child just because I preferred it! Could be the case here?

No sheet is gross but we don’t know that he sleeps in it without a sheet though as the bedding might just be in the wash.

I think the mattress on floor is ok short term but not in the long run.

No they don't. Any more than mattresses in a divan bed. My son had a mattress in the floor because he was lethal and would duve off a bed, Dr said it was the safest choice. Like when the mattress was on the bed it was turned and aired regularly

My grandson is currently sleeping on the floor as his bed broke last week. Bought another hopefully stronger bed from Argos who broke it on delivery and now can’t redeliver until the first week of October! Grandson will have to make do with his mattress on the floor for a little while longer he’s cool with it but his mum is not.

In my culture sleeping on the floor is the norm. We all do it. We have like futons but more easily packed away and then it opens the room as another play/social space.

Inwould be more concerned about hygine and unresonable mess, child unclean and clothes unclean.

I am literally reading this from mattress on the floor of my 3 year olds room, while I put him to bed.... so yeah, probably terrible parenting 🙄

Wow I am so amazed at this thread. I am very houseproud, keep my home very clean and tidy and am meticulous in how I care for my son who is now 4.5. He slept on a small double mattress on the floor since about age 2. At first I aired it every day as I was worried about mould but then realised that was excessive and did it every couple of weeks.
It worked perfectly for us as he liked being able to climb in and out and I never had to worry about him rolling.
I have never heard of this being somehow worrying or abnormal.
It's funny too how many in the thread assumes a mattress on the floor isn't being regularly aired.

Since the age of 6 my child has refused sheets, a pillow and a duvets I have tried endlessly to make her bed nice, she’s autistic and prefers no sheet no pillow and just a throw. I would be fucking mortified if someone posted about me on mumsner.

I follow a few mum groups from when I was pregnant with my 2 children and it seems quite common for younger children to have floor beds. As long as there no mould underneath due to poor ventilation then I don't see a problem. I suppose it's great for children who move a round a lot in their sleep. Unfortunately we have very small bedrooms so I needed under bed storage so it was never an option for us.

For a child yes. They can get in and out easily. No risk of falling.. Whats the point of spending few hundred on a trendy frame that’s basically on the floor when they will outgrow it in a couple of years.

Air should circulate round the bed - it could get mouldy! What about divans? And what’s the difference between them? I agree more of an issue about lack of bottom sheet and duvet but are sleeping bags that much different?

I’m a 70s baby when I finally got my own room I had Victoria plumb wallpaper and pink girly bed while my brothers older and younger had superman wall paper and blue beds. Very themed. As teens in the later 80s/90s we decorated to our tastes , so teenage “themed” rooms.

Looking back on history there were very much a theme in children’s rooms for wealthy families. So hardly a modern thing.

My kids have hardly any toys in their bedroom as they are never in their rooms. Instead they are spread in various piles all across the rest of the house which, yes, does look very untidy but I dont really care. They don't have mattresses on the floor however often do not have sheets in the day as if it is bed change day, I take the sheets off, leave the mattresses to air out a bit then replace later on in the day before bed. I wouldn't assume a child didn't have bed sheets because of one quick glance into their room.

Maybe a divan base would be more appropriate in this case? Im still like this with frames. Im 37 and hate putting my foot down out of a bed that has a gap under.

My 8 year old has a mattress on the floor
with sheets/pillows/duvet! It’s more for safety in our house as he’s a mover - I stand it up every other day to air.

The only reason I would say its not a good idea is because mould can develop under the mattress between the carpet and mattress. The only way to prevent it somewhat is for them to use an encasement waterproof mattress protector. I had my mattress on the floor for the last month waiting for a delivery from mattress man. I was very worried about this issue. Other than that, its not an issue or neglect in my opinion.

When I finished child minding back in the early 2000s I did some babysitting for local families to keep my registration just in case I decided to go back to childminding.
One family that I babysat for had four children - all of them slept on blowup beds. No sheets, pillows that were dirty and throws rather than duvets.
The house was large with a lot of land and they had fancy cars which they clearly prioritised over furnishing their house.

My DGS’s double-sized very comfortable mattress is on the floor. When he cries during the night someone can comfort him back to sleep and continue their night there with him, instead of him going into theirs.

I worked for a multi millionaire and his child slept on the floor in a Montessori type bed.

Really? You might voice that opinion to the whole of Japan then. Or parts of Asia and South East Asia where - shock horror - a sleeping mat is the done thing.
