Have I clipped DH wings and been unreasonable about social events?

When we met 15 years ago, DH was very sociable, particularly around work events. After DD was born his attendance at those events became more sporadic; he attended fewer and generally left after an hour or so. I should add these aren’t casual post-work drinks, they’re usually client or internal social events.

DD is now 7, so we’re on a much more even keel childcare wise, so there is the opportunity for him to go to more and stay later.

Earlier this week there was a work event. Attended by everyone. He left after two drinks, and came home. I said he could have stayed longer and he said it “wasn’t fair” to do so. I asked if anyone else had left early and he said no.

We then got talking about other events, and I asked if a date had been set for the Christmas Party. He said there had but he wouldn’t be attending. I asked why and he said “to be honest, I can’t really relax at these things any more and it’s best I just don’t go”. I asked him what he meant he referenced the previous year when he’d been out until midnight, and I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.

On that occasion, he pointed out that he’d stopped drinking at 8:30 and he was perfectly fine the following day (he was), and he had just wanted to stay out and network / get to know some of his senior colleagues better. He says he just doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do and so to avoid problems he’s just not going to attend.

I now feel awful, like I’ve clipped his wings. He never said anything last Christmas, he just apologised. He won’t change his mind about the Christmas party.

AIBU?

I should add, tor context, I attend work events and other social events and DH has never raised any issue with me, even when they have gone on later than expected and I’ve had a few too many. Which makes me feel even worse.

Back in my day it was a badge of honour to tame a wild man.

Was there any particular background to the text last Christmas? I ask because we went through a phase when kids were younger when my DH was incapable of a night out to that sort of time without being written off the next day (assuming it was a failure to adjust to going out less after kids and not recognising lower alcohol tolerance than pre-kid days). So there was a period of a couple of years when I might have sent that message and been totally justified. If I sent it now it would be a different thing altogether - so I’m just wondering about the context

you both sound like a lot of hard work. he's a martyr and you're a bossy boots.

both need to chill out a bit, its not that deep.

Indeed, I think this does affect things.

As I said, I've bickered with my husband when he's treated a 'night out' as an open-ended freebie for 36h of pre-drinks and writing off the following day. Which is fine and allowed, but also needs to be agreed in advance.

Going against the grain (slightly) I think your reaction to him being out at midnight might not be SO unreasonable if he said “I’ll be home at 10” and then gone completely quiet on texts i.e. you had no idea when he’d be rolling in. My DH has form for doing that and then coming in hours after when he said he would, without any update about his eta… that’s annoying.

If you sent one unreasonable/arsey text last Christmas and have since admitted you were wrong I think he’s being a bit martyred for saying he can’t go out.

BUT I agree midnight isn’t late!

And I do agree with all the PP saying that you should be honest with yourself and consider if you’ve been discouraging DH from going out, and if so, take steps to address that. It’s obviously healthy for each of you to have freedom to go out and do what you like. Seven is very late in my opinion to start living your lives again.

RumPidgeon · 06/09/2026 12:28

Yes you have been massively unkind - how overkill to email him and accuse him of neglecting his family. Do you usually throw your toys out of the pram when things don’t go your way or you can’t control his actions?

I’d have a heart to heart chat and apologise and start afresh. It’s good that you’re able to self reflect. The poor bloke..

It's strange to me that a man can't just want to come home and that hiswife must carry guilt and shame because...his career. So bizarre how we put so much into work when we will just be replaced when we die

Iroll · 07/09/2026 16:10

Everyone says things in the heat of the moment, apologize and discuss expectations from both of you.

I really regret the message last Christmas. It was an overreaction, and I fully accept that.

Does he know this?

Bigreddog25 · 10/09/2026 21:15

Yea you need to fix this. That's really sad that he doesn't feel like he can go out now. He should know you were absolutely out of order for sending that message and should have told you so and comtinued to go to his events. Does feel a bit weird to me that one message would stop him going to these events- has this really only happened once?

Midnight for a Christmas party isn't late at all, but I also would plan anything for the day after a Christmas party.

You sound a bit paranoid and controlling

rathersleepy · 10/09/2026 21:44
