Have I clipped DH wings and been unreasonable about social events?

ShedNine · 04/09/2026 10:46

When we met 15 years ago, DH was very sociable, particularly around work events. After DD was born his attendance at those events became more sporadic; he attended fewer and generally left after an hour or so. I should add these aren’t casual post-work drinks, they’re usually client or internal social events.

DD is now 7, so we’re on a much more even keel childcare wise, so there is the opportunity for him to go to more and stay later.

Earlier this week there was a work event. Attended by everyone. He left after two drinks, and came home. I said he could have stayed longer and he said it “wasn’t fair” to do so. I asked if anyone else had left early and he said no.

We then got talking about other events, and I asked if a date had been set for the Christmas Party. He said there had but he wouldn’t be attending. I asked why and he said “to be honest, I can’t really relax at these things any more and it’s best I just don’t go”. I asked him what he meant he referenced the previous year when he’d been out until midnight, and I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.

On that occasion, he pointed out that he’d stopped drinking at 8:30 and he was perfectly fine the following day (he was), and he had just wanted to stay out and network / get to know some of his senior colleagues better. He says he just doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do and so to avoid problems he’s just not going to attend.

I now feel awful, like I’ve clipped his wings. He never said anything last Christmas, he just apologised. He won’t change his mind about the Christmas party.

AIBU?

I should add, tor context, I attend work events and other social events and DH has never raised any issue with me, even when they have gone on later than expected and I’ve had a few too many. Which makes me feel even worse.

I’m not going to bash you because I think something positive has happened in this interaction. The first thing is you got curious - you dug a bit to find out what was going on. That’s great and something couples (especially in long term relationships) can be guilty of not doing. Secondly he was open and honest. That’s great too - that’s what we want our partners to be. Thirdly you listened and seemingly didn’t get defensive or try and deny anything he said to be true. And fourthly you’ve reflected on yourself and your behaviour and realised that some of how you’ve behaved in the past wasn’t ideal.

We’re not always our best selves and that’s ok, as long as we seek to do better next time and repair things when we realise.

I think you just need to have an honest chat. Apologise for the text you sent. Acknowledge that he’s given you more grace for social things than you’ve maybe shown him. Reassure him that you want things to be different and that you want him to feel relaxed about socialising and then show him that’s the case by not repeating past behaviour that has led to him feeling this way.

You can’t go back in time and undo anything so just set a new ‘better way’ for going forward.

TheOnlyWayIsIlford · 04/09/2026 12:00

Have you apologised for the Christmas Party message?
And acknowledged that it was OTT and unfair?

I think you need more talk and communication.

Some people get a bit reclusive or socially avoidant once they have been out of the habit of socialising. Is he using you / family as an excuse not to attend or stay? Does he socialise with non work friends?

How are other decisions and responsibilities shared out/ Would you say you are the more dominant in these respects?

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/09/2026 11:59

Yes you have. I had a friend with a wife like you. He became a shell of himself until they split up and his personality gradually reemerged.

Don't people realise that their 'social eventing' should change after they get married and even more so after they have a family? What, he does not spend enough time at his stupid work place to want to see those colleagues, only tipsy, at parties? This is so naff, unbelievable. Office party social event, my arse. Aye.

OP, is this you, but drunk?

Foxyloxy89 · 04/09/2026 11:58

Yes you have. You sound very self absorbed.

MyMilchick · 04/09/2026 11:56

Oh that was an awful message to send OP, no wonder the poor guy is confused about how to behave around these events now.

I don't believe this is after just one incident. Not a little bit. There will be other instances of pecking and he's given in.

Well at least you know now OP. Might want to reflect

I agree. My friend always looks frazzled and stressed on a night out but it’s usually because she has had a run up of her DH tutting and sighing over things like having to make tea. Suddenly fish fingers and chips in the air fryer is a mammoth task that keeps going wrong. He also recruits the kids into it and suddenly they’ll have a tech or homework emergency for her to sort out which dad can’t because those darn fish fingers are just so tricky. Then she’ll get home to a hundred mini whinges about how the kids were rowdy, he’s so tired and stressed. Sometimes it’s not overt control but death by a thousand paper cuts.

Caniweartheseones · 04/09/2026 11:52

Exactly. An abuser would never ever write in to ask opinion like the OP has. She’s willing to think about it and do something about it.

Sorry- meant to quote from above where someone despaired about the pile on against women.

Caniweartheseones · 04/09/2026 11:49

I voted YANBU because you’re right- you have held him back. But I think it’s nice you are able to discuss the problem and think of solutions together.

BunkBedsArePeopleShelves · 04/09/2026 10:54

ESH. You went too far and he's now being a massive drama queen about it. Both of you need to get over yourselves

He clearly can't do right for doing wrong in your eyes, if he wasn't out drinking into the small hoursso he's being a drama queen and if he had stayed out into the early hours, rolling home with the milkman as we used to say, no doubt he would have been wrong too! Why do so many women on MN hate men, whatever they do?

'I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.'

They'd be uproar on here if a husband sent that to this wife while she was on a rare, work night out.

All you can do is talk to him about this.

And everyone is telling her she's wrong to have done it! Which she is.

I know you people can't ever take a day off, but is it too much to keep it off threads where it might at least be relevant? We know you can't cope with a mostly female place reflecting mostly female interests but can't you at least save it for when that might be happening?

ColadhSamh · 04/09/2026 11:47

That was a really nasty message to send. The words and tone of it suggests it was only the tip of the iceberg when its comes to your controlling behaviour. I bet he could give a lot more examples if pushed.

As others have suggested if it was the other way round you would be told to leave.

Cool story. How was the basketball?

Well ok then. Thats the basic must dos on weekends in my December. Glad it’s a cool story.

ManchesterGirl2 · 04/09/2026 11:44

Yeah sorry OP, that message last christmas was really out of order.

On the positive side, its really good that you are able to listen and recognise that.

I think you owe him a sincere apology, and also a conversation about whether he feels there are any other ways in which you've behaved like this. And then really think through why you reacted that way, is there a pattern in the way you behave towards him that you need to address.

Hopefully if he can see that you have genuinely changed, he can gradually relax more.

andthat · 04/09/2026 11:41

ShedNine · 04/09/2026 11:00

I really regret the message last Christmas. It was an overreaction, and I fully accept that.

Thread is fairly unanimous.

You can’t turn the clock back.. so what are you going to do moving forwards?

Sounds like you’ve got a good husband there…

topcat2014 · 04/09/2026 11:41

I live by "Happy Wife Happy Life" but even so this sounds a bit much

99bottlesofkombucha · 04/09/2026 11:38

They had things to do. That says nothing about ‘she planned something on’!! Nothing at all. Things we have to do in the morning on weekends in December - basketball matches, basketball training, ballet, desperately trying to fit in some Christmas shopping, prepping dishes to take to family events, going to family events, buy the Christmas tree (go before 9am or miss out), get to the market for Christmas food (go at 6am or be unable to park). There are lots more but those are the key morning ones that are ‘planned’, although not in any way planned by me. the market and Christmas tree days you might think planned by me but usually very obviously have to be that specific day as the only opportunity in the key timeframe.

Minnie798 · 04/09/2026 11:38

He sounds like a good one and you are right to reflect on this and make changes.
Also, never make plans for the day after a Christmas party. My dp has always known that 'the day after' for me consists of the sofa, netflix, takeaway and snacks.

ColdAsAWitches · 04/09/2026 11:30

@99bottlesofkombucha
what makes you think she planned something for the day after?

Because she said so in the original OP and in the text to him!

"telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day."

Thundertoast · 04/09/2026 11:37

Is there some context missing here OP, like he has ruined family days due to being hungover in the past, gone awol etc, because from what you've said so far I really dont understand why you would ever consider sending that text.

CamillaMcCauley · 04/09/2026 11:36

BunkBedsArePeopleShelves · 04/09/2026 11:22

It was one text, get a grip

It won’t be just one text. Nobody goes from speaking normally and kindly to their spouse to telling them “you obviously don’t give a shit about your family” just because they are out late at a Christmas party.

The husband stopped drinking early and was fine on the day, not even a bit useless because he’s dusty but still showing up.

That’s the kind of harsh criticism you might lash out with after they rolled in legless at 3am, pissed in the closet and yelled at the kids when they got up again at 12, having missed the morning’s activities.

My guess is the OP is pretty good at speaking harshly to her husband over minor “infractions” and now he walks on eggshells.

somanychristmaslights · 04/09/2026 11:35

Have you apologised for the Christmas message?

If the situation was reversed this thread would be full of "LTB he's trying to control your life".

These "if this were the other way round" posts add absolutely nothing to any thread
