Have I clipped DH wings and been unreasonable about social events?

When we met 15 years ago, DH was very sociable, particularly around work events. After DD was born his attendance at those events became more sporadic; he attended fewer and generally left after an hour or so. I should add these aren’t casual post-work drinks, they’re usually client or internal social events.

DD is now 7, so we’re on a much more even keel childcare wise, so there is the opportunity for him to go to more and stay later.

Earlier this week there was a work event. Attended by everyone. He left after two drinks, and came home. I said he could have stayed longer and he said it “wasn’t fair” to do so. I asked if anyone else had left early and he said no.

We then got talking about other events, and I asked if a date had been set for the Christmas Party. He said there had but he wouldn’t be attending. I asked why and he said “to be honest, I can’t really relax at these things any more and it’s best I just don’t go”. I asked him what he meant he referenced the previous year when he’d been out until midnight, and I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.

On that occasion, he pointed out that he’d stopped drinking at 8:30 and he was perfectly fine the following day (he was), and he had just wanted to stay out and network / get to know some of his senior colleagues better. He says he just doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do and so to avoid problems he’s just not going to attend.

I now feel awful, like I’ve clipped his wings. He never said anything last Christmas, he just apologised. He won’t change his mind about the Christmas party.

AIBU?

I should add, tor context, I attend work events and other social events and DH has never raised any issue with me, even when they have gone on later than expected and I’ve had a few too many. Which makes me feel even worse.

ESH. You went too far and he's now being a massive drama queen about it. Both of you need to get over yourselves

Moonnstarz · 04/09/2026 10:54

Agree with others. It sounds like you have been controlling about his social life to the point where it has made him so uncomfortable that he not longer wants to go.
It sounds like he has always been quite considerate, stopping drinking early, but that doesn't sound like it was good enough for you.

Snorlaxo · 04/09/2026 10:54

I agree that Yabu in light of the facts. Midnight is hardly late for a Christmas party and he was fine the next day. Lots of people are unable the function the next day.

I think that you should apologise and discuss the new expectations- especially if socialising is needed for his role.

Nuttyrubble · 04/09/2026 10:53

It does sound a bit like you have dampened his enthusiasm somewhat....feel a bit sorry for him

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 04/09/2026 10:53

are you controlling in other ways? Parenting, day to day expectations?

Scared0112 · 04/09/2026 10:52

Oooft. Yeah you’ve been massively unreasonable, why you’d plan anything for the day after a Christmas party I don’t know- but it sounds like your DH had already really considered it and had stopped drinking at 8.30 (!)

all you can do now is massively apologise, and hope he can learn to enjoy himself again.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 04/09/2026 10:52

Yes you have. If your massive over reaction to last years Christmas party is any indication I suspect you have been subtly (or not so subtly) making it not worth the hassle staying out for a long time. Time to reflect I think.

moppety · 04/09/2026 10:52

I think you definitely have some work to do. What a horrible message to have sent him, and at his Christmas party. He sounds like he’s just given up and has accepted being controlled like this, which is very sad. You need to sort out your issues around this before you attempt to make things right. Why did you send that message?

Octavia64 · 04/09/2026 10:51

Yes.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 04/09/2026 10:51

Yes you have.

MrsPinkSky · 04/09/2026 10:50

Yes you have.

It sounds as though he's nervous of upsetting you.

Not a great way for anyone to live.

humptydumptyfelloff · 04/09/2026 10:49

Well all you can do now is tell
him you are still sorry that happened and that he has no reason not to stay later other than him choosing not to.

maybe try and encourage him to go to the Christmas thing again but I’m not really sure what else you can say

HippeePrincess · 04/09/2026 10:49

Yes you have. Staying til midnight at a Christmas party isn’t unreasonable. It’s even worse you’re a hypocrite and act completely differently to how you yourself have acted at similar events.
