Have I clipped DH wings and been unreasonable about social events?

When we met 15 years ago, DH was very sociable, particularly around work events. After DD was born his attendance at those events became more sporadic; he attended fewer and generally left after an hour or so. I should add these aren’t casual post-work drinks, they’re usually client or internal social events.

DD is now 7, so we’re on a much more even keel childcare wise, so there is the opportunity for him to go to more and stay later.

Earlier this week there was a work event. Attended by everyone. He left after two drinks, and came home. I said he could have stayed longer and he said it “wasn’t fair” to do so. I asked if anyone else had left early and he said no.

We then got talking about other events, and I asked if a date had been set for the Christmas Party. He said there had but he wouldn’t be attending. I asked why and he said “to be honest, I can’t really relax at these things any more and it’s best I just don’t go”. I asked him what he meant he referenced the previous year when he’d been out until midnight, and I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.

On that occasion, he pointed out that he’d stopped drinking at 8:30 and he was perfectly fine the following day (he was), and he had just wanted to stay out and network / get to know some of his senior colleagues better. He says he just doesn’t know what he should or shouldn’t do and so to avoid problems he’s just not going to attend.

I now feel awful, like I’ve clipped his wings. He never said anything last Christmas, he just apologised. He won’t change his mind about the Christmas party.

AIBU?

I should add, tor context, I attend work events and other social events and DH has never raised any issue with me, even when they have gone on later than expected and I’ve had a few too many. Which makes me feel even worse.

He's clearly changed his behavior because he's afraid of upsetting you again. You haven't just clipped his wings, you've changed his whole demeanor. It's horrible. You need to have a serious conversation and apologize.

Unless this is a reverse.

If the sexes were reversed and a man had sent a message telling his wife she didn't give a shit about her family because she wasn't home before midnight, and now she's reluctant to go to work events - everyone would be saying LTB he's controlling. So yes @ShedNine YABU and your behaviour is controlling and emotionally abusive.

Oh calm down. She is reflecting on her behaviour and looking to do better. Abusive controlling people don’t do that.

Carodebalo · 04/09/2026 11:15

Look you’ve been unreasonable but I would not say you’ve clipped his wings! Husband could have replied ‘don’t be ridiculous’ and that could have been the end of it! Just sit down with him, apologise and discuss together how best to approach all these events you both need to go to. It really shouldn’t be that difficult.

'I’d (admittedly) sent him a message telling him that he didn’t give a shit about his family because we had things to do the following day.'

They'd be uproar on here if a husband sent that to this wife while she was on a rare, work night out.

All you can do is talk to him about this.

If the situation was reversed this thread would be full of "LTB he's trying to control your life".

MrsPinkSky · 04/09/2026 11:15

I work with people who will only stay for an hour at events and you can see how nervous one or two of them are, constantly glancing at the time and saying how they need to get home to their DPs.

Horrible.

leggingsbotoxmatcha · 04/09/2026 11:14

Yeah OP, not good 😬

Maybe sit DH down and say that you massively regret the message you sent last year, and you know you overreacted. Apologise and let him know you fully support/want him to go to the Christmas party (and letting his hair down) this year and also at other events!

Also - if it can be helped of course - maybe don’t plan anything for the day after the Christmas do. They only happen once a year, after all. Or chuck him a bacon sarnie, some paracetamol and have a nice day out with DD.

It would suck if your temporary overreaction caused a permanent behaviour shift for your DH.

Screamingabdabz · 04/09/2026 11:13

I don’t think you’re controlling - I think you’re just a woman who is used to a ‘hands on’ partner and conscious that he doesn’t take the piss. You fucked up once. I’m the same. Was massively questioning of my DH on his ‘nights off’ and in retrospect didn’t need to be. He was a good man and I was insecure. You live and learn.

Just apologise and reassure him. Start anew.

canalbird · 04/09/2026 11:10

Did you sincerely apologise for the message you sent him?

Shellityhorn · 04/09/2026 11:08

ShedNine · 04/09/2026 11:04

He goes relatively often, as much as me. He has 4-5 weekends away with friends (one night) every year as they all live in different places, and he sees local friends too. It’s not excessive and he’s never drunk and incapable. I don’t have an issue with that, the Christmas thing was an exception because of our plans the next day.

So he drinks sensibly and takes his parental responsibilities seriously, but you're not happy? I mean, midnight is hardly excessive for a Christmas party!

OhDuckWhatNow · 04/09/2026 11:06

If you were at home all the time with zero social life, I'd maybe lean more towards YANBU but ...

The text last Christmas with the fact you also go out to events & are worse for wear afterwards?! YABVVU and have some making up to do. Are you controlling in other ways too? Give it over before he walks.

Cherry8809 · 04/09/2026 11:05

ShedNine · 04/09/2026 11:00

I really regret the message last Christmas. It was an overreaction, and I fully accept that.

But why would you even send that??
If a poster came on here saying her husband was sending her abusive messages because she dared to stay out past midnight, people would be shouting from the rooftops about controlling and coercive behaviour.

To say that you wonder if you’ve “clipped his wings” is simply minimising. He’s actually walking on eggshells and shrinking himself so as not to rock the boat (that you are very clearly the captain of..).

DaisyChain505 · 04/09/2026 11:05

Yes you’ve over reacted and been hypocritical.

The best thing you can do is hold your hands up and tell him after some personal reflection you can see how wrong you are and that you’re very sorry and want things to change.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/09/2026 11:04

Yes, you have.

It sounds like he's consistently sensible and responsible and hadn't given you any reason whatsoever to think he would have been drunk/hungover or ruin your plans for the next day.

He'll likely be actively damging his career by not attending / staying for these things, they're work, they're not piss ups with his mates. Not that nights out with mates would be unreasonable either!

Your message was a massive overreaction, why did you send it, can you articulate it? Midnight is not particularly late, even with plans the next day (unless you had to get up in the small hours for travel or something) How does him being out at midnight = not caring about his family? Has he ever rolled in off his face and ruined plans before? He doesn't sound like that's the sort of thing he does from your description of him, it seems a bizarre thing to jump to unless he has previous.

How would you feel if you were out on one of your nights out and he was sending you messages like that?

ShedNine · 04/09/2026 11:04

Franxi · 04/09/2026 10:58

Yes, you sound very controlling. It’s also a bit odd that you’ve waited until your child was 7 to address this. Does he never get to go out? We’ve both been on nights out individually since ours were babies.

Oh dear. You’ve got some big retrospective apologising to do! YABVU.
And by the way, what a nasty message you sent. Bad enough that you messaged at all, but the content? Vile.

PollyBell · 04/09/2026 11:02

Women can be just as controlling as men and yes you are

Beepen · 04/09/2026 11:02

Is this a reverse? That message was totally unreasonable

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 04/09/2026 11:00

If he genuinely doesn't want to overly socialise with his work colleagues then good on him for being a responsible family man.
But it definitely comes over that you call the shots in the relationship and have an unhealthy tendency to dictate to your H what you expect of him.

You’re being very mean and controlling and he’s done nothing wrong.

Bogstandardname · 04/09/2026 10:56

Sounds like you have a decent man. Stop controlling him or you may lose him. I agree that you are a hypocrite.

bunnypenny · 04/09/2026 10:55

Yes you have. If he was home at midnight, what time did you send him a message and why? He clearly doesn’t have form for going out and getting twatted and “not giving a shit about his family”. Were you jealous he was out?

are you trying to isolate him from friends, colleagues? Because his reaction hasn’t come out of the blue. What else have you said/done?
