AIBU to think school skirt bans undermine choice rather than equality?

I'm not in the UK and the local secondary school has a gender neutral uniform so boys could wear skirts if they wanted to. I've never seen one doing so but the option is there.

Girls here don't wear ultra short skirts, I'm still waiting to hear why it is that UK girls seem to feel the need to do so.

Did you read the thread I was replying to? The posters daughter has comments on her bum in any trousers apart from flares. There will be other girls with the same issue but without the flares solution.

wow, was this happening only 25 years ago? It was thought a mighty victory when they became an option in my school 50 years ago!

I don't think linen wide legs come in school grey or would look appropriate for school with a blazer.

Some parents don’t though. As I mentioned earlier on this thread, a BBC presenter recently posted a picture of her 12 year old in a tiny school skirt and to paraphrase, basically just said “don’t comment on the short skirt, that’s just what tweens and teens do”!!! 😳

But they don’t leave the house looking like that.

If my dds were to try to leave the house in skirts showing their knickers they’d be told in no uncertain terms.

Many women wear trousers, and these days the choice is endless, but for school surely straight leg trousers are ok- it’s not a fashion show!

They’d wear shorts with their bums hanging out!

What about instead of banning skirts, make it compulsory to wear shorts underneath said skirts. I wonder what the outcome of that rule might be 😊

It's not rape or close to rape to look. It's wrong to comment, take pictures or touch without permission.

Genetically men are more attracted to the visual it's a cold hard fact. Hormonal teenage boys are definitely going to take a peek or two. It's perfectly normal and I wouldn't say "oh they shouldn't be looking". The girl should not be wearing underwear visibly if she didn't expect peers to look at it.

Based purely on how the local girls dress, trousers would be better, I volunteer in a shop near the secondary school and I can tell you the trends in underwear due to the girls flashing it so often. Trust me, I’m not trying to look, but I’m a safeguarding specialist and I am concerned that certain individuals might have those secret camera glasses etc on the pavement and be filming them for gratification. It’s so icky. Just a couple of inches more of skirt would eliminate the problem.

if you have teenage girls who want to wear such short skirts please encourage them to wear little shorts underneath as a minimum, not thongs!

Most UK schools just have a colour for trousers (and a rule, say, no leggings). So black. Or grey.

I know plenty of women more masculine than a lot of men.

I also know lesbians (therefore attracted to women) who manage not to stare at attractive women. Gay teenage boys would get the shit kicked out of them if they gazed lustfully at hot boys in shorts during gym. Therefore boys CAN control their staring.

but are they available? What i read on MN constantly on uniform threads is that there isn't enough of a range style of trousers so girls can pick the ones that fit properly.

You could just get trousers that suit her shape like the "flared wide leg trousers" that you say are "great".

i don't live in UK (No uniforms here, no issues apart from the "no spaghetti straps" rule and the male teachers accusing the girls of wearing too-low-cut blouses until one of the women teachers actually pointed out that for sure they can see the cleavage when they walk around a classroom of seated girls so that one was nipped in the bud and the male teachers had to alter their behaviour)

But. When i am out and about in the UK during home-time or seeing kids on their way to school i have never seen anyone's bum cheeks or knickers. The girls i have seen either wear joggers, trousers (and they seem to be girls' cut trousers) or skirts that are just about on the knee.

yep - i was in the army and for many jobs the women ever ever wore trousers. (I was in a more active field-type role and rarely wore a skirt after training)

but i chose to go into that job - i didn't choose to go to school so why be forced to wear trousers? If teachers/schools are unable to enforce skirt length that really does say a lot about the staff/schools (we had to kneel on the floor if our skirts were suspected of being too short, if they touched the floor, fine, if not - detention and come back with a skirt the correct length)

If this is an attempt to release girls from boys looking up their skirts - again, that is just putting someone else's failure to behave on the girls.

I never wore trousers at that age, such a faff if you got your period suddenly, or a leak. Going for a pee is a faff in trousers. So this sounds as though it is girls having to compromise to help the boys out.
