AIBU to tell DH his once-weekly tooth brushing is off-putting?

A few months ago DH told me he felt his teeth were worsening in both health and appearance (I had noticed this too but was too polite to tell him!) and he suggested he should maybe brush them more often.

I asked now often he currently brushed them (meaning how many times a day) and he said “probably once a week or so” 😱 I found this shocking at told him so! He said from now on he’ll do them at least once a day.

He did this for about a week and now he’s back to never doing them. I know he’s not brushed them at all this week as I moved his toothbrush and it’s still exactly where I left it. I find it really off putting.

I don’t like to embarrass people by pointing out personal things like this but once a week (if that!) is shocking isn’t it? WIBU to tell him even though he will probably be offended?

I’m by no means a clean freak but I couldn’t cope with this. His breath must be appalling.

Brittany21 · 05/09/2026 16:56

This absolutely turns my stomach. I won’t let my husband anywhere near my face until he’s brushed his teeth in the morning. Bad breath is the most disgusting smell and your husbands mouth must be rotting, full of tonsil stones and plaque 🤢
I would leave him, no question. Dirty fucker.

HollaHolla · 05/09/2026 16:20

Oh that’s grim. I couldn’t kiss him, knowing that.
Can you encourage him with a sticker chart or something?? (Only 1/2 joking….)

seventeenofsumday · 05/09/2026 16:17

Op you have to tell him. This isn't a minor issue. His breath must absolutely reek and his teeth are probably full of plaque. I don't even think he's just at the point of needing to start brushing twice a day, he will need to go to a hygenist to get the hard build up stuff removed as there's no doubt there will be shit between and on his teeth that can't be removed by brushing. Not as severe case as this but I had a boyfriend who had less than excellent oral hygiene and I had to have a difficult conversation with him, and make clear I wouldn't be with someone who didnt look after their teeth properly. It was fine after that. If you don't tell him then you'll have to stay with someone who stinks, people won't want to be near him, you won't be able to kiss him never mind anything else. If you are fine with that life crack on, but I wouldn't be.

I find it inconceivable that you didn't know this.
Do you not share intimate moments together, or even sleep in the same bed?

Disturbia81 · 05/09/2026 14:36

Ultimatum.. no teeth brushing, no kissing.

Bluedenimdoglover · 05/09/2026 14:11

That's ridiculous in a grown man - unless he has mental health issues around his mouth. He's heading for gum disease(if he doesn't already have it) and, apart from his teeth loosening, gum disease and infection can have a direct effect on his heart. If he were my husband, I'd stand next to him while he does it twice a day. He needs to develop a "habit" regarding this - and you can't establish a habit in 1 week.

MidnightMeltdown · 04/09/2026 23:35

Fucking hell OP, I’d be doing more than telling him. I’d be leaving him if he didn’t change his habits. How utterly disgusting and lazy! How on earth do you kiss this man?!

That’s disgusting. Is he dropping other hygiene things as well ?

Cantbefucked · 04/09/2026 22:56

Comments on this are gold 🤣 @mumsnet Why did you need to take away the haha button YABU!!

Halitosis Henry LOL
Choo Choo trains toothbrush 😆

tealandteal · 04/09/2026 22:30

Does he go to the dentist? What does he say when they ask how often he brushes? If he’s not happy with his teeth why doesn’t he brush them more often?

Wonkybaby · 04/09/2026 22:21

Fucking hell. Take your standards off the floor and tell him to brush his teeth ffs.

Motuihe · 04/09/2026 22:11

Get him the new supertoothbrush...£400 well spent. CameraJet looks amazing.

Manthide · 04/09/2026 21:56

Whilst married to my now exdh he used to complain how much toothpaste I went through (I use a normal amount). He was very proud that his toothpaste had lasted over a year! Guess what it lasts forever if you never use it.
Now he only uses mouthwash and AFAIK doesn't brush at all. His personal hygiene also isn't great - one pair of underpants in a week.

Livingnightmare0 · 04/09/2026 21:42

This can’t be real, I’ve not brushed mine twice a day a couple of times after getting pissed and it was utterly vile !

Boreded · 04/09/2026 21:38

SweetAudry · 03/09/2026 22:36

Funnily enough he showers daily so I can’t understand the lack of mouth hygiene!

Could you put his toothbrush in the shower. Tell him to Make it a part of his shower routine?

My son needed reminding for years and years, sometimes still does, but only on a weekend because on school mornings it is routine. But now he is on ADHD meds he very rarely forgets, and does them twice a day now. I still check every now and again, but because his teeth brushing happens in the bathroom next to my office I do know they’re being done.

Whatwouldnanado · 04/09/2026 21:24

What an ignorant moron! And how come you haven’t noticed? Get him a dental appointment ASAP. Massive issue for his general health.

Burntout01 · 04/09/2026 21:23

This is pretty odd in an adult who otherwise has good hygiene, has it always been this way? Its worrying and sad as by neglecting his oral health he is increasing his risk of serious illness such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimers disease.
i think OP you will have to sit him down and lay it on the line, I personally couldn’t cope being with someone who neglected themselves like this.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/09/2026 21:23

This cannot be true.
His teeth must be rotting, breath rank.
There's no way OP wouldn't have known her husband's habits and if they changed.

Is he actually bothering to wash though?

BuildbyNumbere · 04/09/2026 21:18

Sounds vile.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 04/09/2026 21:14

How would you not have known this already. He must smell rank even if you didn’t go that close. Some men are disgusting. I used to notice my old boss sometimes used to come in without his teeth being brushed, you could smell it. Rank.

DaisyChain505 · 04/09/2026 21:13

I’m sorry what? Has he always only brushed them once a week or is this a new thing?

What grown adult doesn’t brush their teeth twice a day.

YABU for tiptoeing around the situation and not telling him straight up how disgusting and unhygienic it is and how bad they are getting.

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 04/09/2026 21:11

How has he made it to whatever age he is thinking this is acceptable?!

And if you have kids, then presumably he taught them to brush twice a day etc, so why would he think he doesn’t need to?

I am baffled. Utterly. And of course it is utterly fucking gross.
