OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

How could she say the things that she said without being racist? This is a genuine question, what else could have driven her to say what she said?

Surely it's self evident that she is racist?

it’s so disingenuous though, she’s an actor surely she deals with people of different skin colour all the time. Does she ask everyone or only when she’s on tv.

I just watched the episode on ITVx and there's none of what you just mentioned in the interview with MG, they must have edited it out!

I think MM is crude and crass, and don’t particularly like her.

However, what she asked was insensitive and rude, it wasn’t racist as such. Saying it was dilutes the meaning of the word “racist”.

How does all the things MM said dilute the word 'racist'?

Remembering that Andi Peters was at work when MM said the things she said to him. Where I work it would be seen as racist as per our 'behaviour at work' policies. Also, the term MM used would be seen as racist and offensive.

You don't think her saying "high yella" is racist ? Granted not everyone knew what it meant but she did and used it.

In its original usage it wouldn't apply to Andi Peters anyway, its more relevant to people who could potentially pass as white and very much associated with the history of slavery in the US South.

Appalling thing to say and while her coarseness seems to be tolerated by many, I hope this won't be.

Apart from everything mentioned, she seems to be in the news every couple of weeks with a story along the lines of “Why I fell out with John Cleese” “Why I could never get on with Glenda.Jackson’ . And I seem to recall she got on everyone’s nerves when she was in the Real Marigold Hotel but TBF I may have misremembered that.

No it definitely was racist.
Asking someone about their parentage and skin colour apropos of nothing in the workplace - racist.
Making assumptions about someone's ethnicity based on their skin colour - racist.
Using a racist term - obviously racist
Telling a black person, a british black person that they don't need to be nervous and everyone is included - racist
It's not clumsiness. It's not being a bit old and using the wrong terms. It's just being racist. Why are we trying to pretend it's not?

I don't know if you are deliberately pretending not to get my point. It isn't a difficult one to understand.

You really don't have to tell me that racism is everywhere. And I'm not pretending in the slightest that there isn't a lot of racism in the older generation. There is obviously plenty of it. Nobody is claiming otherwise.

However, I don't like seeing age used as an explanation or an excuse for racism because I find that there is just as much racism in middle aged and younger people. Sometimes even more.

People are not racist because of their age. They are just racist.

You think I’ve missed the point because you can’t compute my perspective.

You misinterpret my observation about that generation as an “excuse” and treat it as an opportunity to lecture perfomatively on a subject of which you quite clearly have little experience.

So - I don’t actually care what you find. Ime overt racism is more common in that generation and if you talk to the people who work with then on a daily basis, you might discover this. That doesn’t mean that younger generations are less racist, they’re just more aware of what can and can’t be said publicly and on TV.

It's racist because she was so focused on his race and gave the impression that she didn't think he was properly British. It's not her place to 'include' or 'welcome' him.

MM does this schtick to shock and outrage. She thinks she's terribly funny and eccentric whereas she's just a twat. Whoever thought it was a good idea to book her for daytime TV needs to be seriously reprimanded.

She got on my nerves with all the farting and shitting she constantly talked about.

Crikey, I'm watching Kingdom on U&Drama and two of the most awful 'NT's' are on it. Miriam and Stephen Fry!
