It's actually a slaver term from the USA. Slave owners used to categorise their slaves by skin colour as lighter colours were more valuable. The term used denotes a lighter skin .

GPs were simply middle class professionals, and MM went to a GDST school not a smart boarding school which might explain were she picked up some of her affectations.

Sometimes even further back especially if previous generations have married those with a similar skin tone. I call this generationally mixed but still black.

That is just how actors of a certain time were expected to speak Maureen Lipman and my grandmother were both of the time and also put on the posh voices. Maureen is from Hull and my grandmother was from East London. It is the old fashioned bbc or theatre voice.

Because being a Gp before the NHS was probably seen as quite prestigious and he would have been held in high regard, between that and Miriams upbringing of being "better " and private education she will have mixed with high handed types who were prone to othering and being seen as some sort of white saviour. MM was also involved with a workers party with other people like herself so thought they were representing people who couldn't help themselves, this is probably where her attitude stems from.

She's always been unpleasant. Unpleasant old people tend to be unpleasant when they're young; and looking at social media, it's clear to see that there are plenty of unpleasant younger people around.

The mobs of racist thugs you see on the news attending right wing marches are generally not made up of 'old people' they tend to be young or middle aged. Those people are the ones that will go on to be racist old people.

And yes, generalising that all old people are racist/homophobic/sexist and so on is ignorant ageism and yes, there's a hell of a lot of that on MN.

If it was part of an ongoing discussion about ancestry and origins, it might have been slightly more acceptable, but in the context of the interview, she just showed a peculiar fascination with Andi. Why didn’t she therefore ask Christine Lampard about her ancestry too because she has dark hair and brown eyes and therefore not “standard and generic” English colouring?

I didn’t realise, she had even asked Andi previously in the interview, “What accent is normal for you?” That is horrendously patronising; was she seriously under the impression that he usually spoke with a Caribbean patois and adopted a conversational accent merely for TV?

I’ve thought for many years she was just a tiresome, pretentious bore, who for some reason was a useful filler for a talk show. I see now a very unpleasant and insidious personality who, following this episode, should quickly be put out to grass and disappear from our screens.

She really gave herself away with the ‘what would your usual accent be’. She’d just been speaking to him ffs, she had heard his ‘usual accent’.

Margolyes is simply a GP‘s daughter from Glasgow. I don’t know where this posh act comes from.

Having seen the full clip, it seems she was speaking in a northern Irish accent first to the woman presenter and then Andi asked her something like do we have to do it in a northern Irish accent first, and said that with the accent, as though he may have been pulling her up on it (my interpretation) and then she took umbrage and turned on him because he’d embarrassed her and in her posh racist view had ‘got above his station’.

It’s very textbook narcissist rage, if that’s what happened, so she went straight into the racist ‘what would your usual accent be?’ And ‘what are you?’
it’s from personal experience of a couple of people who were nasty to me , if I ever challenged or stood up to them they would make ‘innocent’ comments like that in a seemingly harmless way and say things during / after like ‘don’t worry’ or ‘I haven’t upset you have I?’
very hard to complain because it would look like I was over sensitive and they didn’t mean anything by it’ or were possibly ’a bit gauche’.
