Someone loves her, she is absolutely minted. She earns a lot of money from Cameo. She has a custom built house in Australia (she has an Australian passport as well as British), a house in London, a house in Tuscany (where her wife now lives) and a house on the South East coast which is a holiday rental/used for location filming. She has written a lot of books now in later life, which flowed out from her autobiographies, advice to the nation. Lots of travelogues and documentaries. What propelled her to these riches in later life were her shocking stories on Norton, and on This Morning when Holly and Phil were at the helm. The latter used to massively encourage her to misbehave. One time they had a phone in where she gave advice on viewers problems - she was surprisingly wise and thoughtful doing those. But she has surely reached the end of her popularity now, the shock has worn off and she is now a bore.

Have never been able to stand the woman. I think it’s yet another example of how class still plays a very large part in how successful you get to be in this country. Repeating what others have said, but if she behaved like she does with an a not posh accent she wouldn’t be on the tv at all but somehow speaking like she does has got her a pass for years . The way she spoke to Andi Peters was awful. Apart from the content she was so condescending. Who are the people who’d go to watch her show? I can’t imagine.

Calling Miriam a national treasure is a joke. She is nowhere near a national treasure; she is an embarrassment. Also think that the words 'legend' and 'icon' are used far too freely for people who don't deserve that status.

Doubt she will be on live TV ever again now that she has done this. Wish she would retire.

This is definitely a side issue but having met her in real life as a young a woman I am so surprised that she is still generally accepted as a nice celeb. I worked in a restaurant where she was ‘acting’ nearby and I’ve never met someone so lewd and letchy towards young woman including myself. Her language gestures and physical inappropriateness was completely off the scale, it scared me and made me uncomfortable. I’ve never been able to stand the sight of her since.

Your spouse is not able to make you or stop you doing anything. - that's true, especially as Margoyles seems outwardly well enough to make her own decisions.

Her wife has been retired for some time, no reports of her being ill but also possible. It does seem odd they have never lived together permanently but it doesn't necessarily mean the relationship is fake.

Unfortunately, (understatement) I wonder if she was implying lighter skinned black people were more attractive & more patrician (& therefore Andi himself - giving him a compliment as she saw it) by using ‘that’ term? Movies/books plantation owners/Antebellum south & house staff. Which is how I’ve seen it historically referenced.

I don't know why you'd ask, though? How is someone's racial background relevant, 99% of the time? If a blonde woman says, "oh, this is my son," about a man who is obviously mixed race, then clearly either he's adopted, or her husband is of another race. It's not exactly interesting information.
My own children are mixed race, and it's never been relevant for others to bring up in casual conversation, except when we've been talking about doing cultural activities that relate to their dad's heritage.

The way MM brought it up was unnecessary, insulting, and made use of racist terminology.

Margolyes has spent years coasting off her image of "old lady who says inappropriate things, which people find hilarious and endearing." She obviously thought a racist comment would be one of those hilarious and endearing things, but it's backfired on her.

Poor Andi. She was very disrespectful to him, but he handled it well.

We can agree it was bad judgement. I don’t agree about her age though. I agree with @Holidaymodeon that some of her generation have “stinking attitudes”. Pulling out an old slavery term is very characteristic of that generation and lack of awareness.
