But you'd inspect it before buying, surely? You'd know if the house it was in smelled unpleasant, you could sniff the sofa itself, and you could look it over thoroughly for damage - if the seller wouldn't let you do that, you could walk away.

You'd be mad to buy it without inspecting it in person, of course, but as long as you were local enough to do that, you could make sure of its condition.

If I was up for spending a grand, I wouldn't want something secondhand, where you run the risk of it smelling of smoke or having damage or whatever.

It’s the what ifs. Bed bugs, fleas anything else than can be bought into my home. Plus the ick factor of have people fucked on this, naked arses? Sweaty Betty sleeping on it making it pong, Could pong of smoke or vapes. Could have all sorts of crumbs and crack trapped in the inside.

The I’ve already talked myself out of even viewing it and I’d buy bean bags.

I think, with respect to the OP, buying antique or even pre-owned from a shop is not the same as buying directly from the owner. If it has sat in the shop, even for quite a short period, if its infested its likely to have been noticed and dealt with but If you had ever had to decontaminate a whole house, you would understand.
Actually I do think that antique is not the same as preowned because antique sold for use is very likely to have been reupholstered.

Problem is someone looking for 2nd hand probably wont have much money or be able to get credit.
Ive never bought a 2nd hand as id be worried about pets smoke stains if person/kids spilt or had accident on them.
I see loads being given away all the time that look fine but then to get a man and van costs.
People will also look at lowest price they sell for someone said 2300 so already in back of mind I be thinking liar you saying 3k as dfs never not have a sale lmao

OP, if they are comfy see them as a blank canvas for lovely blankets and cushions.

I bought my sofa mostly for the look and while it is comfortable to for one person to lie on flat out it isn't great for sitting properly on. The seat depth is too short so your lanky DH would be fidgeting.

Could you get rid of some of the sofa if itseems to big?

Maybe sell the 2 seater or chair?

The thing is with dfs, it is well overpriced anyway and part of the lure is the 0%credit they offer so you don't have to have the money up front, just £40 a month or whatever. That said, I would pay £1000 for the exact sofa I wanted second hand

There’s a website called sofalistic. I’ve not used them but they arrange the collection and delivery which is a huge barrier to selling second hand sofas. I saved a few when I was looking and they’ve all since sold so that indicates someone is using them. Worth a try?

We are sofa shopping at the moment, I wouldnt pay a grand for second hand sofas even if as you claim they are a few months old. If you are selling them after a few months they are either very uncomfortable or shit sofas. I think £500 for both is very optimistic to be honest, £400 is probably about the max I'd pay. We went into dfs last week looking, the quality of the ones we looked at were shocking compared to the other stores we looked around, our current sofas that are 10 years old are dfs and have actually stood the test of time brilliantly, but they appear to be cheaply made now.

Me too! I'm currently eyeing up a preloved Maker & Son sofa that we'd struggle to afford new.

We recently sold an eight year old Sweetpea & Willow sofa for £400, having asked £450 originally. The buyers were delighted with it and we were happy with the price we got.

Most sofas we've purchased over the years have been second hand (although the Sweetpea & Willow one was bought new) and some were antique. Currently we have a stunning Arts & Crafts Movement sofa with original appliqué work that we paid just £200 for in 2013. It's completely unique and irreplaceable imo. I'm afraid I didn't even consider bed bugs when we bought it on eBay without viewing first!

The trouble with @AMurderofMurderingCrows's set of sofas/footstool is that there's nothing particularly special about them. I'd scroll straight past if I was looking, but many buyers prefer neutral so someone might fancy a bargain if they see the original cost. Good luck OP!

The thing is people don't know why you're selling a very new sofa. They tend to assume the worst. That something happened on it, that it's uncomfortable, that it's faulty in some way.

Would I pay a grand for a second hand sofa? The answer to that is no. Firstly I don't have transport so that would be an extra expense and I'd need at least one helper to shift it. I wouldn't really buy a DFS sofa anyway. And for just over a grand I could get a Habitat Julien chaise brand new. Delivered to room of choice.

That doesn't mean someone won't pay that. I just personally wouldn't.

Because round here you can get a fairly new sofa for about 10-20% of the new price. So there just isn’t any point

Having paid £1400 for a recliner for my elderly mum, I discovered a few months later that the shop no longer sold refurbished ones and on eBay I could find them for £100. So I imagine getting someone to pay £1000 for something with no guarantee is pretty impossible.

I've sometimes found a bargain when someone else has bought then a couple of months later changed their mind/decided to move etc!

Usually paid about 1/3 and have been so thrilled, most of the time I get the same amount (if not more) when selling too as I take time to style some really nice photos, that seems to make the difference to attracting buyers!
