AIBU to think the new sixth form outfit looks like something from "The Handmaid'sTale"

They look bloody awful.

And they're trailing on the ground where they'll get muddy and wet.

I wish girls' uniforms would get rid of the ties, whether with trousers or skirts.

It doesn't. Read the thread. The standard uniform is a trouser suit. The long skirt is an exception for anyone who doesn't want to wear trousers.

I'm guessing, but I imagine it's offered for cultural reasons where a knee length skirt would be as unacceptable as trousers.

This takes me back to when long skirts were the fashion back in the 70s and lots of us wore them on a daily basis. It's made me quite fancy wearing one again.

Exactly this. Mine are at independent secondary and they said they were glad that rolling skirts up is completely forbidden there!

Just mentioning again that there are many girls who like the long skirt and choose it.

And some girls like the fact they don’t have to roll up their skirts, look ‘sexy’ etc. It’s a relief to wear a long skirt.

It's an observation. We don't have skirts like that in any schools in my county.

I'm not getting Handmaid's Tale just from having a long skirt. I get why people - including many teens - wouldn't like these and similar uniforms, but also why some do like them.

It looks similar to what I wear to work, except I don't wear a tie and my shirts / tops of my dresses would be at least mostly dark as well. I also wear dark leggings under my skirts/dresses as well. Nothing to do with modesty, it's just comfortable for me, I like how it looks and the silhouette it gives and it fits within work dress expectations.

It's not what all women where I work wear, but suits in general in black, navy, or dark grey are generally expected especially if public facing.

I go up and down stairs all day just fine, though I probably wouldn't cycle in my workwear.

@BananacrepewithnutsThe blue jackets and long skirts are Rugby school. 6th form. The “pilot” uniforms are formal dress at Arts et Metier Grand Ecole France. That’s a university.

@WutheringTights They almost certainly don’t see it as that. They offer trouser suits. I’m not convinced 6th form should replicate office work as there are a vast number of careers that have a varied clothes policy !

This is the uniform (only worn on specific dates) to give you Handmaid's Tale vibes. The traditional uniform of The Red Maids' High School which was worn by boarders.

When I was in secondary school it was fashionable to wear soft long black skirts (instead of knee length ones), I think we thought it made us look like tortured artists/vaguely mysterious.

I think I'd still choose the long skirt over a trouser suit if I was in that 6th form. It's the better of two bad options!

For the benefit of new posters, OP identified the school in a post that has since been deleted. Her claim that this is the only sixth form uniform and that there is no trouser option is false. A trouser suit is the school's preferred option. This is the alternative uniform for those who don't want to wear trousers.

The school shop does not provide trouser suits - students are expected to purchase those elsewhere. So this is the only option available from the school shop, but it is not the only option available to students. I suspect OP has tried to purchase uniform from the school shop and has not properly digested the uniform rules.

Jesus Christ, I’ve worked in senior positions in the City for the past 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone dressed like that. What workplace do they think they’re preparing students for?

I can cycle in a short skirt, but it isn't in any way modest and you should wear decent big pants or thick tights 😅 wouldn't do it in a leather skirt, would definitely stretch the leather.

(obvs irrelevant to school uniform)
