To think I've fucked it - raw chicken

All it is is a measly pasta dish. DH in office tomorrow and wanted DD and me to eat "well" and not something oven-y.

So I used a pair of scissors to chop up raw chicken breast into a pan, all good. Chicken pasta all ready and tasty. I pick up aforementioned scissors to chop fresh herbs over the finished dish and noticed a raw chicken morsel on the scissors and it all came flooding back to me. I used the same scissors for the raw chicken and they sat there waiting to be washed but I forgot and just used them. I've stuck a low flame under the pan in an effort to kill any bacteria/cook???? any potential raw chicken morsels that fell in.

Have I fucked the entire dish? 😫😭 Can it be saved or will I kill my entire family?

YABU - the dish is fine
YANBU - stay away from this meal at all costs

Is it British chicken? My understanding is that salmonella is an extremely low risk in chickens and eggs that originated in the UK due to our rules on vaccines etc.

It is still important to follow the guidelines about cross contamination nonetheless, because the situation might change - and if it's not UK chicken the risk increases.

I personally wouldn't be overly bothered by what you have described.

With chicken in the UK, you will most likely be fine but it’s not just raw chicken chunks you need to worry about. The scissors would be coated in chicken and the bacteria which then went all over the herbs. You need to heat the dish fully until it is all piping hot.

Do you not cook much? You said your husband is in the office and you’re trying to make something that isn’t “oven food.” So would you usually just make frozen food?

Might be worth learning to cook 6 or 7 good meals so you’ve always got something to fall back on.

Edited

I used to cook more, would have happily thrown a dinner party once upon a time. My excuse is I was parallel cooking another dish and was trying to be swift with both... I have a little boy who is 7 months old and sadly has a lot of medical issues that take up a lot of time in the day and night and so we've very much fallen on quick food. It isn't ideal but it is what it is.

My standard offer with these types of thread stands.

I'll come round and eat it all. If I die of food poisoning, you'll know you've dodged salmonella-campylobacter-botulism surprise.

Reheat it in the oven until it’s piping hot tomorrow

You'll be ok.

DallasMajor · 02/09/2026 22:20

I would microwave it tomorrow before eating. So it is piping

But I wouldn't eat it after just heating the bottom of the pan.

And I'm a skank, most MNetters would be horrified with my level of acceptable consumption.

Can you put it under a grill? I dont know how risky it is though.
