To think I've fucked it - raw chicken

dodomin · 02/09/2026 22:15

All it is is a measly pasta dish. DH in office tomorrow and wanted DD and me to eat "well" and not something oven-y.

So I used a pair of scissors to chop up raw chicken breast into a pan, all good. Chicken pasta all ready and tasty. I pick up aforementioned scissors to chop fresh herbs over the finished dish and noticed a raw chicken morsel on the scissors and it all came flooding back to me. I used the same scissors for the raw chicken and they sat there waiting to be washed but I forgot and just used them. I've stuck a low flame under the pan in an effort to kill any bacteria/cook???? any potential raw chicken morsels that fell in.

Have I fucked the entire dish? 😫😭 Can it be saved or will I kill my entire family?

YABU - the dish is fine
YANBU - stay away from this meal at all costs

Not correct.

A colleague told me about a work event her husband organised. Unbeknownst to him some muppet in the catering team unloaded the cooked chicken portions back onto the board the raw chicken had been prepped on. They were then put on platters for the buffet. She said several people attending the event were met off their trains at their home destination by ambulances that evening because they were so seriously ill. About 3/4 of the large gathering were affected, so several hundred people. This was a while ago, so possibly predates routine salmonella vaccination of UK poultry flocks.

The timeline doesn’t support the raw-chicken-board explanation:

  • Dinner is served.
  • Cooked chicken is allegedly contaminated immediately before the buffet.
  • People become seriously ill on their journeys home, only a few hours later.
  • Salmonella takes at least around six hours to cause symptoms and usually longer. Campylobacter takes two to five days.

The outbreak may well have happened, but same-evening illness points to a toxin already present in the food before dinner, not fresh contamination from the raw chicken board.

I thought I might have! Did you eat the chicken and are you all ok?!

We are all still doing ok 😁

Glad you survived! I once accidentally used a fork that had been in raw chicken to test whether my pasta was cooked, and I was so horrifically ill afterwards. I think it was campylobacter. It’s made me a bit obsessive about food hygiene, and for anyone else reading this, I really wouldn’t recommend taking any risks at all when it comes to chicken!

Of course 😁

Are you aware that most cases of Listeria and E Coli come from salads....... Just saying!

You have, fortunately for me, misread my posts!

The only reason I mentioned DH being in the office was because I find it harder to cook a meal when he's not home because then he isn't around to look after the kids whilst I cook. He never dictates what we eat and is generally a very easygoing person. And I cooked two different meals because it was an attempt to meal prep and cook ahead whilst the kids were sleeping.

I tend to use pre cooked whole chicken breasts ,the sort that are in the deli section of the supermarket, for quite a few of our meals to save this sort of thing happening.
I tend to use the scissors for the herbs , spring onions , chives that sort of thing .
I have a disabled adult daughter and she’s a major distraction in the kitchen !
Also if I want her to cook I trust her with chopping cooked chicken to add to a dish on my separate chopping boards.
I have colour coded chopping boards for veg , fish , raw meat and cooked meats although I know a wooden chopping board is definitely better with my very good cooking knives and scissors.
I have a completely different bread board that sits by the bread bin for slicing bread , muffins etc .
pre cooked chicken might be a good idea for you for future use ??

I think you’ll be fine as long as you serve it piping hot and I’m very anxious about food poisoning.

Get that your DH wanted you to eat well but wouldn’t that mean he’d cook for you? Sorry if I’ve misread your posts but to me they essentially say because your husband didn’t want you and DD to have an oven meal, you had to juggle cooking 2 different meals whilst looking after a 7 month old with medical needs? That’s more work and pressure for you for an outcome he wanted?

You will survive. You didnt roll the scissors in a turd or leave the chicken outside for two days.

Complete overreaction.

I wouldn’t eat it. My friend’s son managed to give all of his uni flatmates and himself Salmonella after using the same knife to chop raw chicken and then some salad to go with it. UK Health Protection Agency investigated after two ended up in hospital. All recovered, fortunately. Raw chicken is high risk regardless of UK provenance.

Persephonia1966 · 03/09/2026 14:25

You can use raw chicken scissors to cut herbs with no danger so long as the herbs are then going into a dish that is going to be cooked all the way through. So so long as you reheat the whole dish so it is piping hot throughout then any nasty germs will have been killed. Which it sounds like you are doing.

You do know you can get food poisoning from vegetables if not washed and cooked properly?

Yes, but still.....😁

Chicken is so dangerous. Strange that the Government Health Department hasn't banned it completely. I don't know how anyone can eat it, and as for chicken in takeaways, well I bet there are often a few knives re used there, as the food inspectors can't be in every such place 24/7. I'd also say that there's many a household where the same knives/scissors have been used for this dangerous bacteria ridden chicken as other things.

Who would eat it FGS. It's nuclear level dangerous. Stop and the anxiety will disappear! 😊

Good lord. This is either silly hyperbolic nonsense or you're drunk

ChocolateApples · 03/09/2026 13:54

As long as the dish is heated thoroughly after the chicken is added you are fine. The issue would be chopping fresh herbs over the finished dish and then eating without applying more heat.

Ideally you want that heat applied straight away so the bacteria in the chickeny herbs aren't sitting on warm cooked dish multiplying. But realistically a decent reheat when you actually eat it will do the job.

HostaCentral · 03/09/2026 13:48

Considering we all spent years rinsing raw chicken in the sink before cooking it, you'll be fine. Also survived 20 odd years of hand washing chopping boards and utensils etc in a bowl of hot water. Actually can be better than dishwashing, as you actually physically scrub the bacteria away.

I also used scissors to chonk chicken.
