Yes. My husband relies on multiple medications, we've built up about 2.5 weeks worth, I know that's a primary concern for a lot of people.

But they do have stuff 'as it happens' and their cats have food so the likes of 'that starmer character' are clearly scaremongering. 😬

I do think it depends on the actual issue. I think if IT systems go down and bank accounts freeze people will panic.

Many people take daily prescriptions which would again panic some more than running out of beans. As many would probably only have under a week buffer if that.

For heat I guess we are talking a camping stove kettle and hot water bottle....hot drinks

It's a home defense exercise. Essentially a war game. Where a scenario will be tested to see how officials hold up. They are running public campaigns along side. If you Google there's quite a few articles with more details.

There have been national, regional, county and council prepare campaigns for many years. Some tend to update them around this time of year as concerns about the upcoming winter come to mind.

You can search your local resilience forum or emergency plan to find concerns local to you, but the national prepare information covers most things.

Something will likely come, most likely weather related.

Remember plenty of governments, including Bristol City Council, have put out details on counter-zombie plans - that doesn't mean they know zombies are coming, it's just a slightly amusing version of what all these all prep plans are. It's part of government to prepare for all eventualities and help their people do the same. Whether they've done this well is another matter.

It's probably not the most important thing to panic buy, but maybe get an extra bottle of ketchup and some emergency salad cream.

I've heard of fatalism but this is taking it a bit far. No one is specifically saying war. So you wouldn't have a few days-weeks worth of essentials in, considering the most likely disruption will be to our power and anything involving IT, and besides that we are seeing unprecedented extreme weather so winter could prove really interesting. That's up to you, obviously. Seems pretty short sighted though.

Depending on the size of the household and not including water yes potentially.

It's a very big drawer

Its only because we have so many idiots in this country we have to be told really basic things. How many threads do we have where someone has a contagious child but they must take them to a supermarket as there is absolutely no food in the house and delivery isn't an option as they live in the middle of nowhere and they have no family or friends who can get them any shopping. Its the same reason some kids clothes have labels saying remove child before washing.

As others have said the govt put this on years ago - I think it was more months when Brexit was happening. It is wise to have some tins and a stockpile of necessary items as a general rule. Even ruling out war or any attacks, climate change has shown so many disasters can happen without warning, it is better to be prepared with what you can be. If Russia or Israel do decide to attack us, there won't be much we can do as civilians but keep out of the way.

The fascination about this drawer is hilarious. I'm imagining that your husband is using it to stockpile cash, gold and gems to barter with - you'd only need a drawer for that.

Lot's of EU countries go with 72 hours rule - water, food, powerbank, torch, batery radio.

It's not about surviving a full blown apocalypse, but about being reasonably ok if something localised goes wrong - giving the system time to act, prepare the back up, or evacuate people.

I remember the eftpos system crashing just before Xmas in NZ due to IT failure rather than a cyberattack. Busy supermarkets and no card payments possible. A bit of cash in the house is a good idea.
