AIBU to think the stockpile advice suggests something to come??

@Yodeldodeldo it's because it is decades since most British people have experienced an emergency. I haven't had any power cuts since the 1970s that have lasted more than a few minutes. We had the petrol crisis and COVID, but shops remained open and water came out of the tap.

We haven't been given messages this clear for ages. They obviously think there is a real risk of significant disruption resulting in situations where we won't get any external help for a while. Anyone who isn;t listening and isn't stocking up is a fool.

There are loads of countries where people just get on with the emergency store cupboards without fuss.

They have tv ads in prime time spots about civil defence, earthquake drills in schools, etc. Public sector staff do mandatory training on civil defence alongside how to lift a heavy box or use a stepladder.

There are some odd individuals who feel the need to resist any attempt make the UK nation less helpless in a crisis. I don't understand the resistance, does it impact your civic freedom or something?

We are being told crisis are likely and not expect help from the authorities immediately in a crisis.

Covid was funny in that sense. I remember following the stuff in China. Telling dh and he thought I was being a bit tin foil hat but indulged me and started adding extras to each shop but we were never going to lock down.

I was sat on the news and webpages as one of our children had a trip with their activity and I was very much a oh what if it gets cancelled. No it won’t. Well he was right there it didn’t. The day after the trip however we locked down.

He listens now when I say to stock up on stuff.

It makes sense to have some back up water and food in the house. I don't have much space but always have a few bits and a couple of large bottles of water each.

You say this, but honestly you could tell that COVID was going to result in supply shock and be a genuine problem very early on from what was happening in China. People who were paying attention and saying this at the end of January/ beginning of February 2020 were ridiculed and written off as preppers. Even if they were known to be very sensible heads.

Then when the shit did start to hit the fan, I was shocked at how many people were really caught out by it all.

I am seeing the same pattern now. There is a build up of issues which are liable to either reach a crisis point or we will have a system failure. DHs job means I am aware of outages more than most and the fragility of a lot of system people are under the mistaken belief are robust and secure. Not to mention how much of a bloody car crash over reliance on AI without the back up of human critical thinking is.

I don't think it's doom mongering. I think it's simply prudence which is massively out of fashion.

According to the Daily Mail which is usually doom ridden it is for crisis which may happen in the food supply chain. Extreme weather, cyber attacks and disease are mentioned. Government probably don't want another thing like in Covid where some people only had half a loo roll and one days food in stock.

We have a freezer full of figs and plums so hope it doesn't go off, no batch cooking though.

You’d get to live like zombie apocalypse kings for a few days eating it all. Unless you live somewhere very cold.

As long as the power was coming on for a bit each day however and you was very careful opening the freezer you’d be ok. Not ideal on a general day but you’d be on in a oh shit.

It's interesting that people always mention they have a full freezer of usually batch cooked food. How long do you think that will last in a power cut?

Rumours are rife today about a big crash in the markets being imminent. Whether this will pan out I don't know.

All I know is something significant is happening. I confess I genuinely don't understand it but there's enough going on to have my attention.

There is a press conference due to be held at 1pm local time in DC by the Vice President and an executive order is due to be signed by the President at 5pm.

The speculation is all over the place. Some are saying they are going to declare the Iran US war over - after realising they have run out of oil reserves and if there's one thing Trump Supporter love more than Trump it's being able to drive their cars - and this would be a disaster for the mid terms.

Others saying it's all market manipulation.

Others saying that the executive order being signed after the markets close is big.

The Yen has been struggling and it does look like the Bank of Japan is trying to prop it up with intervention today which really could impact the markets (look at the exchange rate of the yen against the dollar and the pound today - something significant happening).

I don't know. But in the context of everything else going on and the news this week being particularly 'spiky' (lots of significant little things that don't seem to be adequately being taken seriously by the British Press), I'd say keep your eyes open.

I don't think it will be good, whatever it is, for most of us normal people.

I've just thought of something that would sort me out anyway as I live on my own and no pets either so am easy to cater for. Buy a big bag of protein powder, tinned fruit in juice, Weetabix. Make up protein powder with water (it's white if vanilla flavour ha ha so looks like milk!) add to Weetabix and fruit, drink what's left. That'd keep me going for days. I know I'd soon get sick of it, but it's easy, nutritious and doesn't require cooking. Must have water though for mixing, note to self. 😊
