I asked my mother when I was a kid why men refer to their cars as she.
And Ma said that some men think their cars are more important than their wives and children.

Patronising much? 🙄This isn't language moving on, it's language being distorted until it becomes almost unusable.

I'm learning another language at the moment, and as usual, the gendered mutations are driving me batty.

we've arrived at a point where people believe their own hype to the point they can re-purpose phrases, grammar and linguistic context to mean something it doesn't, other than in their own heads...

Ahhhh I so agree! The overuse of the word whimsy makes me want to commit a violent act. That and the greeting on the videos, Hey Babes! I’m not your babe, no I don’t want to follow some other whimsy account. I want you to share the clothes you have bought in silence so I can see if they suit me! I don’t want to see running backwards and forwards to the camera like you have a uti! Oh and the new, I was too nervous to share this video….. then all the bleating about how brave they are because they did something very ordinary like go to Tesco but titled it, going out of my comfort zone! Please someone silence these influencers.

You know what? I am heartily sick of being "sold to". I feel like I have to rethink every single thing I look at on social media. Instead of connecting with other real human beings, I'm just waiting for the hidden "sell". "10 best..." then links to the products, or worse "join my course for tips on how I...". Its becoming so formulaic and I feel like a mug. Is there anyone in the world not doing a hard sell of their story?

A separate point, but I find it achingly intolerable when people have words written on their walls that state what you should be doing in that room e.g. soak, love, eat, relax etc. DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!

I’m not on insta but I spend a lot of time on Reddit looking at handbag subs and I see people ( mostly the americans ) refer to their bag as she, which I thought was bad enough.

The best one though is when they post a collection of their bags and title it “look at the family photo”
or “a photo of all the children together”

Sure I'm being argumentative! The irritating tendency OP describes is for everything to be 'she'. Particularly clothes, décor items and personal care. As I said, there is no language in which all these words are feminine.

It isn't some sort of intriguing linguistic revival or a new lingua franca. They're anthropomorphising cardigans and candles. All these comments about other languages, dialects and earlier versions of English are irrelevant.

Some are interesting in their own right, mind you. Did you know that grammatical gender is not only about sex (M, F, N) but can also distinguish semantic features like humans, animals, plants, liquids, or sizes? Some living languages have around 20.

Mostly the same for me, lots of stuff about books, ballet, some comedy, and music all things I am interested in. i get the odd influencer thingy but I scroll past as quickly as i can, if you click even once then the alogrithm will send you more though there is a "not interested" tab you can click to make it hopefully stop

I like it. English used grammatical gender for nouns well into the 12th century and the practice is long due a revival.
