Dog crates are cruel

In light of this terrible story I think they should be banned. Yes people will say they are good for training etc but I think in general they are being overused. A family member would put the dog in it while they have guests. Dog is not vicious or anything, just gets a bit excited as a young dog should. I think this is awful.

We used one when our dog was a puppy. Once he was about six months old, we left it in place with the door fastened open and he used it as a sort of bedroom - the cats used to like going in there too. It was in the living room where we all spent most of our time.

We used to take our doggie camping with us and we'd take the crate to put in the tent and shut him in overnight, so that he didn't get up while we were asleep and wander into other people's tents. Other than that it was never shut past the small puppy stage.

He's long dead now but still missed every day.

Crates are fine if used properly. It’s people that are cruel.

Simonjt · 02/09/2026 17:48

Crates with doors are illegal where we live, its also a criminal offense to leave a dog home alone for more than six hours.

My beagle once pulled up and chewed the kitchen floor when we were out of the house for 20 mins. By dog proofing do you mean taking up all of the flooring and removing the furniture?

I've seen a video of a staffy that ate through its front door. It ripped the letter box out and then took chunks of wood off it. The owner had to go home early from work and by the time he arrived it had its whole head out of the door!

MeridaBrave · 02/09/2026 17:44

Some dogs need to be crated for their own safety. My dog doesn’t need one but I know people who use to keep the dog safe. Or imagine a dog who’d eat the sofa to bits even if left for an hour.

We also had to use a dog cage for our pointer cross, when she had operations for bilateral ruptured cruciate ligaments and a dislocated kneecap - she was on vet-prescribed cage rest for a total of nearly 30 weeks, in all. She had to be restricted so she didn’t undo all the surgeon’s good work - she was walked to and from the garden to do her business, but had to be supported to do so. If she had run, jumped or slipped, she could have done irreperable damage.

Was that cruel, @Poppycorn123?

Yes, I was so glad our dog was crater trained when she had surgery and needed 4 weeks ‘bed rest’. I’d never have been able to stop her running around without the crate.

Very silly comments. How do you stop a Labrador pup everything in site while you go to the shop? It’s to keep your puppy safe and your home intact when you aren’t there to supervise eg at night and when you go out.

DOGPROOF your house

First I have heard of this story...

However, I agree dog crates are cruel, and suggest people can't control their dogs.

We used one when our first dog was a puppy - we didn’t overuse it, but she was in it over night. Even after we stopped closing her in it at night, it was still her safe space. We left it open, and she would choose to go into it - she liked it in there.

Exactly that. It’s their safe space, and we’ve used for multiple dogs. One used to pull the door to an unfastened close behind her.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 02/09/2026 13:42

Crates are only acceptable if they're left open at all times and the dog uses it to take himself away. Otherwise they're restrictive and cruel and if you wouldn't put your child in one, you shouldn't be putting your dog in one. In fact I think that people who shut their dogs in crates shouldn't have a dog

Children go in high sided cots so they don’t fall out or get up and wander round the house at night. It’s for their safety when young. Dog crates are the same.

It doesn’t say the dogs were in cages, just that they were abandoned. You are conflating two unrelated things.

Hellohelga · 02/09/2026 17:07

Summer26woohoo · 02/09/2026 15:03

Agree.

The terminology 'crate' is used because it makes it sound better, that's all. The crate - a training tool. The crate - their safe place. How lovely and responsible.

In actual reality, it's just a cage though isn't it? A small wire or wood cage that you keep at home, to lock away the dog when it becomes or may become inconvenient. Massively over and mis-used ime.

I can actually see the value of a secure area for short periods when you have a very young puppy or a sick dog whose movements must be restricted. I preferred a puppy pen for ours when she was very young because it was 5 times bigger than a large crate so she still had room to play - and up to 6 months she was in it when we went out or to bed. She was a baby in an unfamiliar environment. At 6 months ish we got rid.

I can also see why a doorless crate may be kept forever...dogs do sometimes want to hunker down under something and be alone. Every so often ours takes herself off to the dining room for a nap under the table...usually after a mammoth walk or if there's a housefull. And the message is very clearly 'i'm done now, leave me the fuck alone'. And we do. And a couple of hours later she'll wander back to spend the rest of the evening on the sofa with us. If we had a crate here, I absolutely believe she'd use it for those times.

But dogs are pack animals and largely want to be with their people. So many times I read of people locking adult dogs in cages for 12 hours a night. Even before they go to bed. 7-7 every night or similar. Or every time when guests are over - talk about how to induce anxiety in a dog every time people are around. Even for work...oh I'm only gone 4 hours, she LOVES her crate, she's fine.

No space to stretch their legs or adjust their temperature. Just stuck there in one tiny cage until someone let's them out.

It's cruel, unnatural and unhealthy, both physically and mentally. But so many people are so captured they can't see it.

So much misinformation. Very emotional. Assume you have a cockapoo.
Dog crates are big enough for the dog to stand up and move around if correctly sized. There’s lots of guidance on how to size it up. I’ve an adult Labrador sized one - it’s massive.
Big dogs will break out of a pen by knocking the whole thing over, they aren’t robust enough. A wire crate is much stronger.
Many dogs aren’t safe to range free unsupervised at 6 months because they are still chewing. Labradors chew till they are two.
Dogs sleep around 18 hours a day. More if elderly. They will happily sleep in a cage for four hours while you go out. After a walk all dogs will settle down and sleep for a good four hours, often more.
Dogs sleep around 12 hours during the night. Mine go from around 7pm to 7am. A garden toilet break is advised when you head off to bed though.

Nuthatch26 · 02/09/2026 17:06

Mine love their crates, and I would recommend all dogs be crate trained in case of future illness or injury etc. They see them as a den and settle immediately if used correctly. I leave the door open 99% of the time, but if needed I can lock them in for a short period.
The dogs in the article died because of neglect, not crates.

HedgerowD · 02/09/2026 17:01

We have a crate trained elderly dog. The door is open most of the time along with the back door so he wanders outside, then goes and lays in his crate.

And shockingly we shut him in when other people's children come around because I don't it fair on either dog or small children to have them together if I'm not able to closely monitor. So cruel.

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · 02/09/2026 16:58

Some so called 'humans' belong in crates, the moron who made the stupid comment on the Wizz flight in front of a poster and her young daughter for one.

HoneyPie12 · 02/09/2026 16:53

Imaginingdragonsagain · 02/09/2026 13:35

I’m not going to read your story but we use a crate. To our dog it’s her bed and she’s happy in there.

Agreed. Our puppy and our dog are crate trained and our puppy now puts herself in when you say "bedtime" and "naptime". She is happy and settled and safe and I can go to the shop knowing she is!

Hellohelga · 02/09/2026 16:50

Didntask · 02/09/2026 13:38

Yanbu. At best, they're for clueless owners, at worst for lazy owners. Can't be arsed to dog proof your house? Crate. Can't be arsed to supervise your dog? Crate. Can't be arsed to house/toilet train your dog properly? Crate.

Very silly comments. How do you stop a Labrador pup everything in site while you go to the shop? It’s to keep your puppy safe and your home intact when you aren’t there to supervise eg at night and when you go out.

HappiestSleeping · 02/09/2026 16:39

Poppycorn123 · 02/09/2026 14:47

Absolutely , for good owners it takes effort. For the lazy ones - they shove the creatures in there for their own convenience and see nothing wrong with it.

That's like anything though. The reason there are so many issues with dogs is usually because the owners are lazy and don't put enough effort into exercis and training, or they have no clue about the origins of the breed they have acquired and just want to ignore it because their new dog is cute.

Also, I couldn't see the original link as I didn't want to accept trackers or pay. One or other was required.

I have 2 X puppies and a senior dog !
This is the first time I've ever crate trained because I have to !
If I didn't crate train now I'd have littermate syndrome on my hands and I'd have a stressed out senior dog !
I only do enforced naps and this is actually good for their mental and physical health because they grow so quickly they need alot of rest to also process what they have learnt through the day !
My puppies are well behaved and they listen to me when training !
I take them with me when I go out if I'm going to be longer than their 2 hour nap schedule!
People who don't agree with crate training I get it I've never used one before when I've just had 1 puppy !
Nothing is bad if done correctly it's bad dog owners their the reason those dogs died and that's beyond cruel why do people do this I don't know !!!
As an animal lover this is horrific!

What's with all the exclamation marks? Do you talk like that in real life?

Nofeckingway · 02/09/2026 16:21

It's not the crate that was the problem here . It was the fact that the horrible owner abandoned them . Even if they had been loose no access to good or water wouldn't have made the difference. I hope the bastard gets jail time.

StrathSellsFlats · 02/09/2026 16:17

Shinyhappyapple · 02/09/2026 15:57

@StrathSellsFlats you say you removed the doors I’m on your crates, so they are never shut in there? A crate with an open door and one that is closed is a very different thing. Sounds like you use your crates as we used to, but I know my dog gets very cross/ upset if the door is closed .

Yes, we removed the doors when we put the crate together. They saw it as their own space and wandered in and out throughout the day. Contraband was also stashed at the back.. anything worth nicking was nicked and hidden in there! Slippers, bits of biscuits, sticks from the garden and one of my bras were found over the years😆

I agree, OP.

People who can't be arsed to train their dogs shove them in a crate.

You have to train a dog to get used to a crate.
