AIBU to refuse moving my son's car from a public road?

Our house is in a corner plot at the bottom of a cul-de-sac. We have converted half of our front garden into an additional drive so we now have parking for 3 cars, which we have.

Unfortunately our working hours can cause us problems when it comes to parking our cars as it’s a long single drive so cars are parked behind one another.

My DH and I both leave for work at 3.30am and sometimes my DS doesn’t get home from work until 11pm, so to save as playing musical cars at 3.30am (and potentially waking the neighbours) my DS parks on the road opposite when our shifts do clash. However, the people who live in the house were my DS sometimes parks in front of have been asking us to move and park somewhere else saying that they have family coming over and need the space, there is space for 4 cars, they had 1 car of family visiting. The last couple of times they’ve asked us to move we have, but now I’m really annoyed about it and have us much right to park there as everyone else as it’s a public road.

For clarity, we can’t park on the road in front of our house as we are in the corner and would block neighbours drives.

Had a similar issue when I was growing up. The neighbour lost his rag and smashed into my brother's car. Came round sheepishly after obviously seeing red but smy brother's car was written off. Never underestimate entitled neighbours!

Just explain that you dont want to be moving cars in the middle of tge night and that you will park your cars on the road if you need to and request tgey dint ask you to move it again as you will not be doing so.

RoxyRoo2011 · 03/09/2026 06:43

Why don’t you move one of the cars out before you go to bed so son can park on drive when he gets home and you can take your car at 3.30? I doubt they’ll be having regular visitors overnight that need to use the space.

Ouside there own house i think they do have more right to the space than you. Having so many cars in one household is your problem not the neighbours.

It's not their own house, they don't live there. And there aren't going to be any parking restrictions that give guests priority spaces on public roads outside friends houses over neighbours.

I’m not saying it is “ their space “ Of course the law says that people can park where they like
Very few people on our road have drives but if someone parks in front of my house I don’t just go and put my car in front of my neighbours house knowing they usually park their own car there . I park in a parking bay further down the road .

But then I like & get on with my neighbours. Maybe it’d be different if they were rude to me !

I like and get on with my neighbours. We've been friends and good neighbours with all of them for nearly 2 decades. But one of the reasons we all get on so well is that none of us are twattish or entitled about stuff like this. We'd all park on the road wherever a space was available.

However liking and getting on with your neighbours doesn't mean not parking in a public space. If her neighbours were pleasant people and easy to get on with they would not have overstepped by making this unreasonable demand.

Even if they usually park in that space themselves, it isn't their parking space.

My dd is often unable to get the space right outside our house because we live near a school and a park and other people like to park there. It isn't reasonable to say that other people are "nicking dd's space" because they have as much right to park there as she does. The fact that the patch of road in question happens to be outside our house doesn't make it our parking space!

Woah.... your neighbours should live in my street!
Your son can and should continue to park there. Your neighours are being ridiculous.

(Neighbours house consists of 3 adults - all working - two large transit vans for work and 3 personal cars all jostling for space. Their drive just about fits two vehicles. All other cars on the street are in driveways. Neighbours place is an absolute eyesore - esp as they park at my front window. I dont say anything because its a public road and what else are they supposed to do.)

Yeah sounds like a pain and an eyesore. What can you do though. You can't choose your neighbours.

All very well saying "you can park where you like" but at the end of the day its probably best not to get on your high horse over this and be reasonable although I can fully see that your neighbours sound like the local busy bodies and it is tempting to tell them where to go. I think you said he had a car not a van or truck which would be annoying. So I think he should move it as soon as possible when he wakes up or perhaps you or your DH move it after you have got out the driveway. Doing that on odd occasions would show you mean well and dont want conflict. You dont want to fall out with neighbours as you both have to live there and it would just make life unpleasant.

Nope. Your premise is unsound. There is nothing even remotely unreasonable about parking on a public road. It's not even on the same planet as unreasonable. But it is grossly unreasonable of them to ask him to move and ridiculous if they get on their high horse about their unreasonable demand being ignored.

They are cheeky fuckers and they need to be put in their place or they will continue assuming they can make ridiculous demands.

The CFs are trying to instigate conflict. By ignoring their demands completely and behaving like a normal person, OP is not engaging in conflict. If they escalate the conflict they are trying to cause OP can involve authorities, if required, or continue to ignore.

unclemystery · 02/09/2026 22:16

My neighbours complain that I ask them to move their car. Out of MY OWN space Confused
they also say blocking me in is reasonable and I should just ask them to move
people are batshit

Absolutelynot2 · 02/09/2026 22:11

Deactivated000 · 02/09/2026 16:32

Yep, asked him to move as they had another visitor coming. Conveniently this visitor still hasn’t arrived.

I hope he didn't move. And he never should. Ignorant, self absorbed CFs like these people will take a mile if you give them an inch. Avoid talking to them. If you haven't already got cameras up that show your son's car when it's parked there, do get some.

its my personal experience that they local busybodies don't stop being awkward when others behave reasonably. They just find something else to be a pain in the arse about. Like danegeld.

Edited

I agree - it's like a mania for them. In fact, I often think that it's the argument and the drama that they want most of all, with the demands only being an arbitrary excuse to prive thenselves 'right' and you 'wrong'; so by pandering to all of their demands and removing any reason for them to complain, that actually makes them the most unhappiest of all!

Whammyammy · 02/09/2026 21:13

100% dont move. Bonkers neighbours dont own the road

I can't stand this kind of person: the sort who will bother you in your home and give you a wholly unnecessary task to do, which is far more of a faff to you than it would be to any (actual) visitors who just have to find a space reasonably nearby when they arrive - just because they assume that their fussy, pointless preferences are automatically far more important than your time or whatever you're doing.

It's like an adult equivalent of toddlers who throw their toys or food just because they want you to have to give them attention and exert their control - but toddlers haven't yet had chance to appreciate that other people matter as well.

Lucyccfc68 · 02/09/2026 20:58

Your DS lives on the road, so he gets to park there. Their visitors don’t live there, so will have to find somewhere else to park. Just tell them this politely and then ignore.

ironsSteve · 02/09/2026 20:57

Nothing in this post is ultimately relevant to the question…. “can someone park on a public road” as the answer will always be yes (subject to any restrictions).. you don’t need to justify anything

WerewolfOfLoudon · 02/09/2026 20:06

@Swimmingteacher21 Or the neighbour's visitors could just park behind @Deactivated000's son's car to keep the peace. The visitors don't live there, OPs son does.

Sartre · 02/09/2026 18:04

So they have family visiting before he’s got up to move it at 7am? Find that hard to believe. Some people think they own the road in front of their house. Our NDN bought a car they don’t use just to park it in front of their house.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/09/2026 17:59

I am petty, I'd play musical cars at 3.30am for a few days and then just give 'em that sickly sweet smile 'but you wanted us to make sure no cars are parked outside yours... this is what that means...'

JustMerelyHere · 02/09/2026 17:57

Many houses have more cars than parking spaces or have other reasons for wanting to park on the road. Public road it's first come first served. If your neighbour wants more parking he should buy a bigger property.

Do your neighbours 1) have a drive that they park on themselves and they’re asking you to keep a space free just for their visitors or do they 2) usually park in front of their house & your son is effectively nicking their parking space ? . If the former they ABU if it’s the latter they ANBU !
Theres social etiquette (no 2) and there’s being ridiculously entitled ( no. 1)

Even if they usually park in that space themselves, it isn't their parking space.
