AIBU to think parents should lose benefits /homes for persistently antisocial children?

This has been suggested, im not sure if it will happen , but i think this is a great idea, if the parents think they will lose their council house and benefits , they may attempt to to control their feral offspring .

My friend is in a local harriers group that starts at a local sports centre in the rough part of town, they are now having to stop their favourite route because of gangs of young teens who intimidate them , run along side them and are abusive, one delightful boy said “ lift your legs higher you c**t ,

How have we come to this ?
Do you think it will make any difference ?

I would remove child benefit from them too , maybe this will force them to parent if they risk losing money or their home

Obviously not all the parents are bad, but virtually all the awful kids round here riding motor bikes with hoods, abusing people are from the council estates near by

Im absolutely sick of it, and sick of decent people being targeted by them

What rules /sanctions would wise mumsnetters suggest ?

That’s the kind of opinion I’d have had when younger, but now I’m older I can see that it would be totally counter productive. The kids would be even worse anti socially and have more chance of become disfranshised and criminals.

GnomeDePlume · 02/09/2026 10:02

Sure Start, community policing, zero tolerance of ASB. Properly fund addiction & mental health services. Properly fund Social Services.

If your kids are antisocial they will get picked up and taken to a centre somewhere where they will have to stay until you come to pick them up. Dont take money away, take time. Inconvenience parents. This will hurt wealthy parents just as much as poor. Repeat offenders will get Social Services involvement.

If you are antisocial you will get picked up and taken somewhere to sober up or to be processed. If the decision is no further action then you have to get yourself home.

Where appropriate use community service orders. The minibus will be picking you up at 6am on the following Saturday (or other leisure day) to take you to the next town where you will spend a few hours cleaning up vomit, graffiti, and other detritus of other people's ASB. You will wear a tabbard while doing this, so that people probably wont know you but they will know why you are there.

The purpose is to inconvenience offenders. And yes to shame.

Having to pick little Jimmy up from the holding centre is inconvenient and embarassing. And spending several hours at the holding centre is boring as hell for little Jimmy plus he will have his parents to face.

That's not my problem and until we get over this arse about face thinking that these anti social arseholes and those responsible for them must not be punished, the more we can look forward to society being ruled by them.

By your way of thinking, they mustn't be punished because...you know...it might punish them!

That's the fucking point!

Punishment is meant to hurt and hurt enough that they will think on for the future.

I kind of agree with you to an extent, in principle. There is a whole lot of pandering for many different groups/kinds of behaviour.

oldFoolMe · 02/09/2026 09:58

Parents need support- there is none it very little. Making children homeless will make the behaviour worse not better.

Oh look, yet another thread from an apparently concerned citizen, lashing out at people in social housing.

And are you advocating for a compulsory purchase order for any homeowners / people with mortgages whose kids behave in an anti social way?

Completely ridiculous idea anyway. Solve antisocial behaviour by... making families homeless?

It was an article in the mail today. Some think tank have suggested it. Would probably would have been helpful if OP had linked it in her first post.

Dock benefits for parents of anti-social youngsters, think-tank urges

Families should have their benefits docked or be thrown out of their social housing if their kids continue terrorising their neighbours, the Centre for Social Justice has advised.

What about parents of anti social children who are not living in social housing, or even claiming benefits?

This thread is vile.

I agree.
Many here won’t remember or even know (as reports mysteriously dropped out the news), but James Cleverley’s privately educated son(s?) were detained by police following some horrifically thuggish behaviours.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/19910453/top-tory-sons-arrested-assault-teen-fractured-skull/

Are we including them in these plans OP?

And when they can't afford to feed their kids because they need to find another £150??

They start selling things. They get a job, two extra jobs. Who cares? I don't.

Do what they must and I hope it fucking hurts.

Whosthetabbynow · 02/09/2026 09:55

How do you know they’re all in council houses?

AInightingale · 02/09/2026 09:51

If it's a persistent offender, then certainly it is a good idea. Though I knew one child who was an absolute menace, caused trouble everywhere and with everyone, led a gang of other kids and was always punching and hitting other children. There were so many complaints to his mother and the local authority that the family were actually transferred, given another house in another area, and the problems started there too...but I know also that there was terrible violence in that home and the father served a prison sentence for GBH against the mother, and despite everything I felt very sorry for that child. There is something very wrong with families where children act like this outside the home and I'm not sure that a benefit sanction would resolve it really.

MissMappsGardenProduce · 02/09/2026 09:44

Double their council tax.
Take away their driving licence.

There's two for a start.

And when they can't afford to feed their kids because they need to find another £150??

TheSoapyFrog · 02/09/2026 09:46

So what do you propose for the affluent/non council families of antisocial children? You can't just take away their homes can you? What if they earn too much to receive child benefit?

What about if there is one 'antisocial' child, but all the other children are perfectly well behaved? Why do they deserve to become homeless and have their entire lives ruined?

What if the child is 'antisocial' because they've quietly suffered years of abuse? How is punishing them by making them homeless and completely impoverished fair?

Where do these families go? Are you content for them to live on the streets? Including babies? Do you care that the children would likely fall victim to sex trafficking, abuse etc? Do you not think this will encourage them to commit crimes so they can survive?

This is probably the dopiest thing I'll hear today.

Why do we want to make people homeless? UK has enough of a problem with homelessness.

YABVU if you think parents can control feral kids.

Well, I don't accept that but say, for a moment, it is true.

If so, reinstate Borstals. Build plenty of them-some of the money raised can be from financial punishment of the parents.

I favour Borstals run along the lines of the one in Scum and I don't care if they go from there to prison without having learned a thing and spend their lives there.

The greater good is more important.

At the moment, the lunatics are running the asylum and it is time to rectify that and if the measures are tough...well them so be it. Boo hoo!

Tawneylittle · 02/09/2026 06:41

I know some people with say I am making excuses but seriously if this is implemented how do with punish the parents from “normal homes” who’s kids do stuff.

Something can be thought of-maybe double their council tax- but no reason not to do OP's suggestion just because it won't affect everybody.

Start with her suggestion-bloody good one- and then onto those who aren't on benefits.

I've suggested doubling their council tax but others will have other ideas that might be better-as long as the element of punishment in the pocket is there.

LiterallyGlowing · 02/09/2026 09:36

Bringemout · 02/09/2026 09:30

I’m going to get blasted for this but I think people get this the wrong way around, their families don’t behave like this because they are poor, some are poor precisely because they behave like this.

If it was simply a case of money we could fix this. What do you do about someone who has little conscience, little empathy, no ability to forward plan and no idea why a decent life with a job and a clean criminal record is a good thing,

Completely disagree with this - as mum of a SEN child, I can tell you that I have tried everything I can to manage my son's behaviour and it hasn't been very successful. It's so tough. Many parents are struggling enough as is without further punishment

So the riding roughshod over land and abuse thrown at the general public by those on horseback in the fox hunt is totally different? They are violent, will use their whips and have no respect for land ownership or others but because they're upper class, it's acceptable?

This issue is absolutely not confined to the lower classes. They're just the low hanging fruit it's possible to sanction. The upper classes have the money and the power so they're untouchable.

Hunts pay compensation for the damage they do. Criminals don't.

And if you're talking about verbal abuse and putting people in danger, then the sabs are far worse than the riders!

And no, I don't hunt, I live just rurally enough to encounter hunts and sabs.

Stopthattractor · 02/09/2026 09:15

I have known families to be forced out of their homes by local vigilantes because their children were too antisocial for the area. It does happen.

RedToothBrush · 02/09/2026 09:13

Thepossibility · 02/09/2026 09:05

Err what do you think will happen if you make already poor people, desperate? If you make already antisocial people, more angry?
Do you really think that will make the streets safer and nicer for all?
Obviously not.

I genuinely think people are this dim when they come up with daft ideas like the OPs.

It's like they are incapable of grasping the concept of how these people would be forced to behave to survive and get food and keep a roof overhead.

They have no concept of how making someone homeless for their behaviour is going to cost more in emergency accommodation, justice system costs and hospital costs.

I wonder just how far they are from saying round them all up and just get rid of them. Noting the approach here is to deal with the whole family - not just the individual concerned.

It's always aimed at certain class groups too.

It's people who want to cleanse neighbours rather than address social problems. And I do not use this phrasing lightly.

I do think there are clear problems that need addressing. But the point is you address them. You don't try and erase them.

Maisymouse2 · 02/09/2026 09:13

Is every foul mouth child from a benefit recieveing parent or housed in social housing?
Not at all
Perhaps look at why the Uk are producing some feral rough and foul mouthed kids.
i see them on Uk shows its disgusting..do thr parents even know.
When my kid swears or abuses me do i get wages deducted then..christ sakes.

concertinacornflake · 02/09/2026 09:12

LlynTegid · 02/09/2026 09:02

I expect that many of such parents go on holiday to Spain or other resorts outside the UK each year, and/or drive a car.

Deny them one of those options. No passport for a couple of summers would hurt them and covers anyone regardless of their income.

Wowsers, this is pure totalitarianism.

There are important principles underpinning the way justice works in countries that observe the rule of law.

It is not acceptable for the state to remove passports or possessions except where someone has been convicted of a crime.
It is also not acceptable to remove a passport or possessions from one person because a separate person committed an act.

Tangyfan · 02/09/2026 09:10

Why is it always such punative measures that are seen as the answers? How about a fairer society, better housing, better transport, bring back youth clubs etc. Lift people up, don't race to the bottom.
