AIBU to think parents should lose benefits /homes for persistently antisocial children?

This has been suggested, im not sure if it will happen , but i think this is a great idea, if the parents think they will lose their council house and benefits , they may attempt to to control their feral offspring .

My friend is in a local harriers group that starts at a local sports centre in the rough part of town, they are now having to stop their favourite route because of gangs of young teens who intimidate them , run along side them and are abusive, one delightful boy said “ lift your legs higher you c**t ,

How have we come to this ?
Do you think it will make any difference ?

I would remove child benefit from them too , maybe this will force them to parent if they risk losing money or their home

Obviously not all the parents are bad, but virtually all the awful kids round here riding motor bikes with hoods, abusing people are from the council estates near by

Im absolutely sick of it, and sick of decent people being targeted by them

What rules /sanctions would wise mumsnetters suggest ?

I agree - bleeding heart doesn’t work. It’s unfair on everyone.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 02/09/2026 07:59

Not sure about losing homes but there should be more sanctions against anti-social behaviour.

My friend used to run her boot camp groups outdoors. They were doing it in a local park but kept getting abused by youths on bikes/scooters with balaclavas on. They were riding through the activities and swearing at the participants. Police were called several times but nobody came out.

She changed the venue to one of those multi sport cages next to the community centre, but they kept doing it there and throwing things against the cage to make a noise.

She's now had to move it indoors into the community centre but can't open the doors due to them hanging around outside so it gets stifling hot and that puts people off coming.

It's horrible that youths can get away with ruining someone's livelihood and nothing is done about it.

I actually think that bringing back national service would work better. My son’s just come back from a country that still has this and he couldn’t get over how polite and respectful everyone was.
Uniforms are always a great leveller. It may also provide a good circuit breaker for young people who have gotten themselves in bad situations/mix with the wrong crowd. Teaching teamwork, resourcefulness, discipline and self accountability as well as an opportunity to carry a good reference forward could set youngsters on a different life course and show them that there are other ways and opportunities.
It wouldn’t just unfairly target lower income families.
Added bonus of a more capable nation in the event that things (as seems increasingly likely) go south!

WhatNoRaisins · 02/09/2026 07:58

I don't even think that parenting classes would work so well for someone who has a teenage child that's a lot bigger than them and does whatever they want. Early intervention sounds more promising but does nothing for teenagers and adults already in this lifestyle.

DrumsPleaseFab · 02/09/2026 07:55

Tired of anti social behaviour too but not sure this is a solution

there is no longer any respect for authority in our society and this has partly to do with status and pay. Police and teachers and social workers and anyone really are not just not respected, they are despised and treated badly and paid badly, which all fits together.

Not sure what the solution is

there is no turning back

it is like a cultural shift where everyone knows their “rights” but nobody wants to have any duties or obligations

or maybe I am just officially old haha

Supersimkin7 · 02/09/2026 07:55

A lot of families don’t want to change - they need incentive to do so. But what type of incentive?

Doesn’t matter if the bait is nice or nasty - although nice would probably annoy some people.

If your UC was sanctioned for not attending parenting classes you’d catch a few ASB types. Food banks stop any hardship.

A family I know like this had one option as kids: get out. Trouble is not many women (we are talking about boys/men here, obv) want to take them on. But it works when they do.

The other kids hugely enjoyed the regular drama with the police etc - the family saw it as an achievement.

Lifelover16 · 02/09/2026 07:53

Community service and youth detention for the kids so they can learn how they should behave. Same for the parents.
I think removing housing/benefits would make it worse, people would become more feral just to survive- they’d have to steal from others.

Soddingcat · 02/09/2026 07:53

I don't for one minute think that all council tenants are like this , but most of the kids like that are , certainly round here they are

However , i think we need to be able to have conversations like this without people getting offended because they live in social housing.
I am only referring to the families who behave like this, not everyone else.

Also, I know full well that antisocial behaviour is not always these kids, But the better behaved children round here are not behaving like this

Maybe, i would hope that the threat of it might be enough for families to try and do something about it, Maybe i am naive….

I think the sure start centres should be brought back and early intervention needs to be introduced

In my utopian world, if I was PM, I would build public schools and run them exactly along the same lines as Eton etc, with the same facilities and the same discipline. I would send seriously feral children to these schools, and they would permanently board.

This gets them away from their useless parents (the parents would also lose child related benefits), get them away from the environment that has created them, and bring peace to their neighbours.

It would be cheaper in the long run than the cost to society of the damage these scrotes inflict over a lifetime.

These kids are already being failed by everyone around them from parents to schools and even the government and you think that punishing the parents and other siblings by making them homeless and/or stripping them of any financial help will improve things?
White working class kids are put on the scrap heap from the moment they are born and failed by everyone. Then even when a few miraculously get the grades for college/university they are blocked by their inability to pay for their education and arent allowed to apply for scholarships because they're only for black or bame kids.
Honestly what do you expect from these boys, white working class kids get the worst grades, are lectued about their white privilege, watch the local white girls suffering at the hands of Pakistani Muslim rape gangs whilst the police and social workers protect the abusers and punish the girls. They grow up being told that they are both privileged and worthless at the same time, that they are to blame for everything from slavery to gaza. Yet have few if any chances in life and watch the bame kids who got worse grades than them get into uni with full scholarships (bame only) then are blocked from internships again because they are white and dei quotas are all that count.
The breakdown we are seeing in law and order amongst these white working class boys is a direct result of the promotion of false equity/equality policies based on the racist critical race theory that blames all the world's ills on white privilege.

If you want to see things improve ditch every single DEI policy, scholarships and internships and replace them with ones that only look at grades and socio-economic backgrounds rather than skin colour or ethnic background, so all poor kids have the same chance oh and stop telling them lies about how privileged they are when we can all see that they are actually the most marginalised.

Gosh, I don’t have time to break down every point in your post but you are clearly a nasty racist.

Thank you.

UnimaginableWindBird · 02/09/2026 07:50

If homelessness and destitution made people better parents then your point might have merit, but I'm pretty sure that they actually have the opposite effect, and the practical effect on behaviour would be that these kids would move from antisocial behaviour to more serious (and lucrative) crime.

A return to sure start centres, parenting classes, and early interventions would make more of a difference, but would also cost more and not be punitive enough for some people.

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · 02/09/2026 07:49

SummerT1me3 · 02/09/2026 06:33

It won’t happen and you will have a lot of people along soon making excuses for these kids but op, I completely agree

Crime rate would go through the roof if their money was cut. even the scum element has eat and pay bills. If anything, they are having kids they can't parent properly because they weren't parented properly themselves. It's a vicious circle.
Why should decent people get lumped in with the scummy types?

Harrumphhhh · 02/09/2026 07:48

Bridgertonisbest · 02/09/2026 07:41

I’ve worked with some of these kids. Nobody cares about them, their parents don’t really give a shit, their teachers at school don’t care and society doesn’t care. The problem with taking money away from their parents is it just proves that nobody cares and drives them sooner into crime.

They’re actually very vulnerable

I’m a teacher. I assure you. We care.

tsmainsqueeze · 02/09/2026 07:48

What an absolutely ignorant Post.
You may end up eating your words if any children connected to you turn out to be antisocial.

Lurkingandlearning · 02/09/2026 07:48

If their benefits and homes are taken away from them does that mean the whole family will live on the street or will the children be sent to children's homes? Or perhaps in order to keep the family together, but still homeless, the government should build workhouses. Taking that backward step will certainly make future social reform easier 👏

INeverReallyLovedYouAnyway · 02/09/2026 07:48

Took my daughter out on her bike last night and there were two boys riding around the roads on electric scooters. They must have been doing like 30-40mph on some stretches. No helmet or anything. They’re going to kill themselves. These parents need their heads looked at.

I don’t believe you. For one it’s not just posh people. It’s anyone that enjoys riding a horse that’s actually enjoying being a horse.
They get permission to go on land. The entire point of the hunt is to be actively part of the countryside , not abuse it.
And yes they use bad language but in response to any violence and aggression.

Anyhow I used to teach kids in a Fresh Start unit at college.
These are not children who have chosen to be obnoxious. Usually theres trouble at Primary school - SEN needs, poor parenting choices, rough areas with little freedom to develop normal social skills.

What works is what works everywhere- throw money in, early doors.

Short term engage them. Humour helps. Tell them to join in - feds won’t catch them if they keep training.

Not the point of the thread but you are wrong about hunts. They very frequently trespass and cause property damage and if, for example, as a 12 year old girl you stand in front of a gate for land they do not have permission to access but they want to follow a fox across, the abuse and threats you receive would burn your ears.

I love horses, I grew up in the countryside, the vast majority of people who participate in hunting are callous, entitled bastards. Simple as that.

And what of the little shits with parents in privately owned housing.
Are they free to terrorise because their parents are earning enough.

Big fines and parenting courses, inconvenience their money and their time

IkeaMeatballGravy · 02/09/2026 07:46

Did you see the extravagant funerals of the lads who caused the M9 crash? Those families were not short of cash. What do you do about the wayward kids of rich/financially self sufficient people?

What is a woman, who has escaped DV supposed to do when her teenaged son starts displaying the same character traits as his father? How is she supposed to stop a lad the size of a grown man from going out and causing problems in the community? What good does it do to pull the rug from under her feet when she is already vulnerable? What about the parents who have been begging for support for years?

MiceSpiders · 02/09/2026 07:46

Tawneylittle · 02/09/2026 06:39

So every kid that’s goes bad comes from a council house and parents on benefits!!!!!

I live in a council house and am on pip and esa due to disabilities that I won’t go into. My son is polite and well behaved.

so how do it punish the other parents or it it just kids from council houses?

most of the trouble at my lads school come from over privileged kids who think they have it made. So what do we do with them, or do they get a pass.

The ones not on benefits should have substantial fines and all whose children behave this way should be made to attend parenting courses

INeverReallyLovedYouAnyway · 02/09/2026 07:45

How are they getting the money for e-bikes and scooters?? None of the decent parents I know would buy their kids these things, and yet the estates round here are full of them. Kids in hoods and masks and balaclavas.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 02/09/2026 07:44

Cobrakainerd · 02/09/2026 07:44

Worst kids we came across lived in private housing, not the social housing. They felt they were untouchable.
