AIBU to think parents should lose benefits /homes for persistently antisocial children?

This has been suggested, im not sure if it will happen , but i think this is a great idea, if the parents think they will lose their council house and benefits , they may attempt to to control their feral offspring .

My friend is in a local harriers group that starts at a local sports centre in the rough part of town, they are now having to stop their favourite route because of gangs of young teens who intimidate them , run along side them and are abusive, one delightful boy said “ lift your legs higher you c**t ,

How have we come to this ?
Do you think it will make any difference ?

I would remove child benefit from them too , maybe this will force them to parent if they risk losing money or their home

Obviously not all the parents are bad, but virtually all the awful kids round here riding motor bikes with hoods, abusing people are from the council estates near by

Im absolutely sick of it, and sick of decent people being targeted by them

What rules /sanctions would wise mumsnetters suggest ?

The courses are offered, but most don't take them, and we can't stop people getting pregnant or remove the baby at birth (well, I know they used to with unmarried mums, but they wouldn't now).
Even when existing parents are referred on to parenting courses by SS, a lot of them just do it as a tick box exercise, not taking it seriously.
And there are some good parents who do their best, but if the kid falls in with a bad crowd at school/on the estate, it can be really difficult to fight that. Some really try, but the kid sneaks out.

'we can't stop people getting pregnant or remove the baby at birth (well, I know they used to with unmarried mums, but they wouldn't now).'

  • that's isn't fully true : babies CAN be removed at birth, but the risk of harm has to be very high.

No it isn’t a great idea. They won’t be an only child. They’ll have to be housed in homeless accommodation. It’ll encourage further crime if there is no money for food.
I would like to see parents held criminally responsible for their teenage terrorists, but again it’s not always black or white.

My kids are not perfect at all, they are young adults now, we have all had terrible racist abuse, my 26 year old son was punched in the chest by a tracksuit clad cyclist when walking across a bridge recently

My post was intended to discuss what people think solutions are,

I just think that the current acceptance and excuses made for them do not help in the long term .

Im happy to be wrong , it all just feels a bit desperate now.
I live near Middlesbrough and it is lawless there.

I am sorry for your son and i loathe racism ,it disgusts me that people behave like this.
I am thankful to live in an area that is quite peaceful compared to Middlesbrough.
I accept no excuse for the appalling behaviour that we constantly hear about in the media, i don't know what the answer is -probably harsher punishments , but i think you are very unfair to put the blame on social housing tenants and their kids.

None , but it’s not just antisocial school children there are antisocial 18 year olds out of work. The army would sort them out.

The army is not a dumping ground, and conscription is unethical, you can’t force people to do a job that involves risking their life, that has to something they are willing to do and sign up for.

Uneducated suggestion for them to sign up to the army.

That being said, employment is a great idea. The difference between me and my friends growing up was that I was employed from before I even got my NI number (paper round) and they were out at the ripe age of 14,15,16 smoking weed, sniffing cocaine and taking MDMA, believe it or not. I use the word friends loosely, I spoke to them because the spoke to me. I knew my path and I chose it well.

I think if you get done for antisocial behaviour then you get one warning. After that, you’re automatically taken out of school / taken off benefits and conscripted into national service until you’re 25.

As for the parents..probably a lost cause by now so let’s focus on the children. Doesn’t matter what your socio economic background is.

What are the armed forces going to do with a 12 year old?

I know some people with say I am making excuses but seriously if this is implemented how do with punish the parents from “normal homes” who’s kids do stuff.

A lot of people receive benefits in some form or another, even child benefit.

National Service - you mean the Army? Do they want people like that? Feral and uneducated.

It won't happen but I think if they did do it, parents would just cry and plead its against their human rights putting them in poverty. What they should do is start parenting courses before people actually have these children.

Poor Army

Its a fighting force not a social service and has plenty of issues already caused by recruiting very disadvantaged young people which this will simply make worse

What benefits would a school age child be on?

KeptWomanSummer · 02/09/2026 22:46

Losing homes?! Absolutely not. PIP - again absolutely not.

However - something to be said for potentially docking child benefit relating to a child who is being anti-social. Perhaps only over the age of 12 or something.

Would be impossible to implement but a good potential idea.

bocketyaulbag · 02/09/2026 22:14

Yes absolutely, driving people into poverty and homelessness is the best way to ensure that they raise lovely children. I don't know why no-one thought of it before

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 02/09/2026 21:29

I am a council tenant. I have worked full time since being 16, managed to proudly escape domestic abuse and get a safe home for my family and I’ve just cut back from full time hours to part time purely to parent my kids best I can being a single mother. You will probably pull your face thinking “typical, part time council estate” but that’s why you should not judge. I reduced my hours so that I can be there the after school to raise my children right. Raise them with love, affection, teach them right from wrong, etc. I’d be damned if my children are growing up causing mayhem without my knowing, or full efforts in teaching them right from wrong.

I could say all wealthy parents kids end up with drug problems because they prioritise work and neglect their children so their kids find comfort through drugs. Is that fair or true?

we could parent shame all day long, but there’s good and bad everywhere. You ARE being unreasonable because you’re tarnishing all council tenants with the same brush.
You don’t become a council tenant just because you’re a scummy mummy. It is for reasons such as homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, loosing your jobs, health issues, leaving the army in some cases.

Don’t be so bloody ridiculous!

What's ridiculous? They've got massive bad boy complexes and roam this leafy burb in ballys and North Face jackets hollering in the early hours, egging doors, turning over bins, smoking weed and breaking the wing-mirrors off cars not on drives, trying to distance themselves from their over-sized privilege. It's not so bad in term time when some are away at school, but the holidays have been pretty grim for the last few years.

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 02/09/2026 21:19

🤣🤣🤣 get your silver spoon out will you?!
what links do council houses have with asbo kids?

I could just imagine who is behind the screen

malloryknox123 · 02/09/2026 21:13

Is it only council tenants and benefit claimants that have difficult children? Really?

I live in middle Class suburbia.

How do we punish the parents of the feral shits around here?

Apparently by making them live in tents in the streets 🤷🤷

OonaStubbs · 02/09/2026 20:53

PensionPTake · 02/09/2026 20:16

And how will it be better when they're homeless and penniless and making even more of a nuisance of themselves because they'll then the whole family will need to steal and do god knows what just to eat?

It would certainly serve as an example to those on the cusp of that, that there are actual consequences, and if they don't shape up they will be spending their winter sleeping outdoors. There wouldn't need to be many families made homeless to get the message across to the others. It would be far better for society as a whole, and that is the whole point, the greater good.

OonaStubbs · 02/09/2026 20:52

What do you do about parents who have no interest in "learning how to parent more effectively"?

MekUsABrew · 02/09/2026 20:35

No, in an ideal world there should be staffed support centres for struggling families to move to. Ideally before it gets to the stage of the child being persistently antisocial.
Where the parents can learn how to parent more effectively, access help with other issues they might have. The children can have proper support and boundaries and would be educated there in smaller groups with a focus on life and employability skills.
It would of course cost an absolute fortune but I did say in an ideal world.

Of course it wouldn’t address the issue of those families with diligent parents who know how to be good parents but have a tear away child. I was one of those, my parents were both working and owned their house. The only benefit they got was child benefit. I was miserable at school due to bullying that wasn’t dealt with effectively and undiagnosed ADHD. I pushed every boundary in an act of rebellion. Taking away child benefit wouldn’t have changed my behaviour.

It’s more than a nuisance of themselves! Presumably the kids from the worst homes had no discipline or boundaries whatsoever.

The kids from the worst homes preferred bootcamp and did not want to go home.

I don't understand, sorry?
