@AdjectiveColourNoun I have a disabled child who will need support long after we are gone. I'm setting her up, so I don't feel like I'm missing out. Knowing she'll receive a good standard of care and support is worth every coffee we never had.

RampantIvy · 02/09/2026 08:01

I'm not in the habit of buying coffees unless I am out for the day.

We are on holiday in the UK and have been eating out every day so our total spend for this week will be around £500 - 600 for eating out.

AllaMova · 02/09/2026 07:59

Coffee - nothing whatsoever. However, we did go for a hot chocolate this week for the first time in over a year.

Up to £50 per month on takeaways. We limit ourselves to one per month, if that. This is because we’re saving up for a home reno job.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 02/09/2026 07:57

It varies a lot. Some months it can be little and other months it can be a lot more - don’t normally get coffees out during the work week but will buy my lunch (often from the the canteen but sometimes external).

Then meals out probably go to a restaurant on an evening as a family once a month and then one lunchtime restaurant but probably get another lunch in the month at somewhere like soft play or the swimming pool or at a zoo.

but this then increases if we are on holiday (unless all inclusive) or have visitors or visiting someone else or taking some time off work in school holidays in which case it will be a lot more.

lazymaw · 02/09/2026 07:56

I used to buy my lunch every day, now i bring my own mostly. Probably a mcdonald’s every other week for us and used to eat out more but its become expensive and poor quality I don’t bother. Used to do chinese takeaway but stopped as it became less good. When i visit family 1-2 times a month we eat out then, but they often pay. If DH goes he will pay normally at around £70 for our lunches

Excellent typo!

🫣 someone always has to deliver on these depressing threads! 😂

Dancer48 · 02/09/2026 07:49

Occasionally a coffee...maybe once a month? I usually bring my own from home when commuting.
Lunch...varies, now maybe once a week. Spend 5-10.
Out as a family...we got a takeaway last month, maybe eat out every couple of months.
It all depends on what's going on.

Lifelover16 · 02/09/2026 07:48

Maybe £4 per month on coffee if I meet a friend, otherwise I make my own.
Eating out -depends if we have any birthday celebrations - 2 celebrations this month so £200 on lunches out. Last month we spent nothing on eating out. We never have takeaways.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 02/09/2026 07:48

We eat out quite a lot and also pay for adult kids and their partners if they’re with us.

Rarely get a takeaway now as they’ve been disappointing, would rather buy a Charlie bighams Thai or similar.

Having said that we had an amazing curry delivered on holiday in Dorset … if that was near us we would have it regularly so maybe our crap takeaways are a good thing.

AdjectiveColourNoun · 02/09/2026 07:44

HollowBamboo · 02/09/2026 01:11

Almost nothing as am perpetually saving, saving, saving. Never have coffee out. Family usually go out to eat for birthdays, so 4x year, and then only somewhere pretty low-key. Maybe £300 per year?

I really hope you are saving for something nice / important as that sounds miserable! But I admire your restraint 👍🏻

MiddleAgedDread · 02/09/2026 07:42

I’ve no idea!
most weekends I’ll have coffee and a bacon roll type thing out or maybe a more substantial brunch. Maybe one or two takeaways a year. Some months I might have lunch or dinner out two or three times depending on plans, but other months not at all……

TorroFerney · 02/09/2026 07:35

KidsAndDogsGalore · 02/09/2026 07:33

Eating out: nothing, except for birthday. We used to have a pub lunch every other Saturday or Sunday. But since you have to book a table and the food quality is gone downhill plus the ridiculous prices it's not really worth it.
Coffee, I like mine a cretin way so rarely.

Excellent typo!

ThisAutumnTown · 02/09/2026 07:29

Far too much. A few hundred a month.
We always aim to spend a lot less but then events always come up that involve meals/drinks out.

Thecatandme · 02/09/2026 07:28

About £150 a week

Live on my own so walk down to a lovely independent coffee shop/bar by our marina twice or three times a week. Couple of lattes and people watching

Then my partner and I have lunch on a Saturday and coffee and a sandwich on a weekday

Will be more some weeks when I/we have lunch with friends

ProjectFailScary · 02/09/2026 07:28

I’ve more or less given up on takeaways and I make my own tea at home or work. Eating out depends on the occasion: I do grab a pastry for breakfast each morning (£15 a week). I took DD out for dinner last week which was about £70. I mostly eat lunches made at home and I eat in most of the time.

Habits have definitely changed since the Pandemic, going back further, Brexit, because I’m fed up of paying silly prices for small portions and rubbish quality. When I was married exDH spent a lot of time in the pub and sometimes I was obliged to go too. Now I only go if I really fancy a pint which isn’t often.

Zero on coffee. I invested in a Miele built in coffee machine when we did our kitchen and whilst it cost £££ and took up the space of entire cupboard I reckon it’s paid for itself.

We eat out maybe 3-4 times a year, mainly because the last few times we did, it didn’t really justify the expense. Average food, average service and I just felt a bit ripped off.

I get you on the “ripped off” feeling—we had a £150 gastropub gift voucher from Christmas that we used on Monday. We weren’t watching our pennies when ordering (4 of us) because the voucher would cover most of it and we were happy to top up. But the mains came with no sides (my main was literally a chicken breast), so by the time you add in a £6.50 portion of chips, the restaurant added their “charity donation” (which you can ask them remove, but you look like a dick), and their £30+ service charge, we paid £123 on top—this included no starters and only 3 of us had dessert. £273 for 4 mains/sides, 3 desserts, 2 glasses of house wine, 3 Cokes, a jug of tap water, the charity donation, and the service charge. 😒

Sartre · 02/09/2026 07:26

When I’m in work I spend too much on coffee, probably £10-15 a day. I don’t often eat out anymore, the odd meal deal here and there and we tend to go for meals on special occasions which set us back £150ish.

pastadish · 02/09/2026 07:26

I rarely have coffee out the house I don’t like shop/cafe coffees I have a coffee machine and I make my own coffees. Also I stop drinking coffee about 12-1pm so after that I don’t bother.
Eating however is another matter. We do get a takeaway once a week which I am stopping as I don’t enjoy it, we don’t have many places to choose from for delivery as we live quite rurally and the just aren’t nice so we decided that we would just go to somewhere nice to eat. Will we stick to that? Probably not.
Probably a few hundred a month on eating out I have never added it up.

Lentilcakes · 02/09/2026 07:26

Pre Dietary issues I’d get a coffee out maybe twice a week (although at one point I was using Waitrose card, and Vitality free Nero cup per week so barely ever paid).
Eating out, maybe similar. Now it’s £15-20 just for a simple meal (Omlette/spud/salad) so unless I’m meeting friends/family I don’t bother as there’s a lot of foods that aggravate my digestion.

So maybe it was at one point £7 on coffees and £40-50 on food. Now it’s 0 on coffee, although I’ll get a herbal tea if out socially, which is no cheaper so a complete rip-off imho (£3 to dunk a teabag that costs pennies in hot water - yes, I know overheads but I do resent it). Brewing coffee is a skill and you’re paying for beans and milk.

And eating out varies, sometimes I don’t for a couple of weeks and then twice in a week. If I can avoid it, I will. So I’ll say about £60pcm.

I’ve saved a lot of money not eating out/buying lunch etc I’m sure.

UniquePinkSwan · 02/09/2026 07:24

Probably about £100 a week. We like to go out in a Saturday to watch the football.

MadeofCheeese · 02/09/2026 07:23

2 coffees per week on the way to the office. £8. Meal deal on office days extra £10. Used to eat out weekly but now it's only special occasions with the cost. Had a date night last week, meal was £100. We don't drink weekly, only meals out and Christmas so I'd say our splurge is the supermarket shop where I'll often buy sushi or Seabass. Before prices skyrocketed we would have a takeaway a week £40 and probably eat out every 2 weeks at £100 but we definitely haven't been able to afford this this year.

Movingonup313 · 02/09/2026 07:23

0.on.coffee as I dont like if. Maybe 5 take out T per year - ridiculoisly expensive so Im not bothered for it.
Maybe £800-£900 for takeout per year.

(No expensive nails/har/lashes/tans on a montly basis, non smoker, average 1 bottle of wine per month )

BunnyMcDougall · 02/09/2026 07:19

My budget for meals/drinks outside the house is £104/month. Anything that doesn’t get spent rolls over to the next month.

pulpJarvis · 02/09/2026 07:18

Quite a lot. Usually have a cheap lunch out at the weekend. Eat out about once a week at night, usually about £50 to £60 for 2. Once or twice a month it’ll be more like £100. About once a month on average take adult kids and partners out so will be about £400 up.

it adds up. And going out to eat isn’t as good as it used to be.
