AIBU to keep our lights up despite neighbour complaining?

We moved into our house just before Christmas last year. We are one of 6 houses on a lane in an u shape and our house is directly opposite one of the other houses. All of the houses are set back so we are not close to the houses opposite.

When we moved in last year, we put up lights on our house and in two of our trees at the front of our house as well as 2 nutcrackers and a Christmas wreath on the door. Nothing garish, just white lights. Every time we saw the neighbours opposite they would comment on the lights and decorations. They said things like that’s is a lot of lights, did you leave any in the shop for anyone else, we certainly can’t miss you etc. We took the lights down in January.

This is now our first autumn in the house and my husband has put up some lights along the front of the house, a garland around the front door and a wreath on the door. We went out for the evening and have come home to a note from the neighbour opposite which said she doesn’t like the lights, none of the past neighbours have ever put them up and that the lights will give her migraines like the ones we put up at Christmas did. She would like us to remove the lights.

How do we respond to this? My husband thinks we just ignore it but I said she will talk to us when we see her if we don’t go over and talk to her about it. He said he’ll tell her not to look at the lights. What would you say? We obviously plan to put the lights up for Christmas again this year so that isn’t going to go down well either.

We know she has moaned about other things to some of the other neighbours like their grandchildren playing outside on their bikes so she seems to be a moaner.

Wow! This took a turn! What a pair of twats

yep and I bet they tried snorting all the white road markings they could find en-route to OPs door

not that I'm profiling people by their actions, or anything

AllStarBySmashMouth · 02/09/2026 18:18

Actually, new idea! Can you arrange the lights to say “RACISTS” and a big arrow Grin

Iamthemoom · 02/09/2026 18:18

OP I’m so sorry you and DH experienced that. Please report these vile racists. It’s the only way they will learn their behaviour isn’t just unacceptable, it’s criminal.

We need a GoFund me to buy you lights for every square cm of your house - great big bright loud flashing ones!

AllStarBySmashMouth · 02/09/2026 18:16

LLM21 · 02/09/2026 18:15

Neighbours from hell for some lights!? Surely drug raids and loud music would be more like hell not some lights!

Bargarran · 02/09/2026 17:58

Both things can be true. The couple can be racist dicks and the lights can be tacky as f#ck.

Edited

But both aren't equal.

Being a racist, making racist comments and racially abusing someone, is illegal

ailsamaryc · 02/09/2026 18:12

I am so sorry you have had to put up with such rude and obnoxious people.

May I suggest that you keep a copy of the ring doorbell and note all interactions with them - just to be on the safe side.

Report to the police, op, but as a non-emergency "I want this on record" thing.

When we moved into a new house a few years ago (we've since left, largely because the neighbours were horrible) one woman a few doors down seemed hellbent on gossiping about us. She'd whisper and point at our door all the time. No idea why. Never had any altercations, we don't have children they might have been annoyed by. The opposite in fact...

Her daughter and their mates kept congregating in my private front garden. Yep, mine. Not her own. One day I went out and asked them to leave. Politely.

Minutes later the mother came round and tried to defend her precious angel. I told her her daughter had been using my garden, as had her mates. She wasn't having it. Started swearing at us. My partner then told her to get off our property.

A few hours later it all kicked off. The husband came by and almost smashed his fist through our door. You know the type "no one talks to my wife like that" and that sort of crap. He then told us he'd come back and hurt us both.

This was during lockdown so no one should have even been near us.

We reported this as a non-emergency, so the police came round the next day and took notes. We asked for no arrest, as imagine living next to them, then. As it was now on record, if anything happened, they'd be immediately arrested. Nothing did, and we sold up soon after.

There's probably not much worse than vile neighbours, but I'm going all in on the second hand judgement of those scrotes

She was a sad troll and chances are high she encouraged her kids to stand in your garden. Meanwhile, her husband was your typical neanderthal, whose shoe size outranks his IQ by at least a factor of 2 and who banks on the fact that most people don't want to get a concussion or worse (including a prison sentence) over something that isn't worth ruining their life for

These people would have been selected out in eras past, as they served zero utility to the tribe, but modernity allows them to survive and continue to pollute the gene pool with their own dysfunction for generations

Oldtigernidster · 02/09/2026 18:11

Hell mend them. Put more up.

Both things can be true but they aren't equal. Being a racist dick far out weighs the tackiness (which is subjective) of lights.
If anyone made a racist comment to my husband I'd get the brightest, flashiest lights I could find.

MarthaLovesLaughing · 02/09/2026 18:09

Definitely report these disgusting racists to the police, to your local Counsellor and to the local paper. Vile creatures 🤮

They’ve been back and it went worse than expected. Some people really are nasty fucks.

They said before they talk about the lights, we need to start keeping our cat inside because it’s using their garden as a toilet. We don’t have a cat and told them that. We have never had a cat.

Next was that we need to not drive out of our driveway at night, but reverse due to the headlights. We are allowed to drive out in daytime. Obviously I said no and that they can’t control what we do.

Next it was unknown cars coming to our house when it’s dark. It needs to stop because they’re unable to sleep. The only ‘unknown’ cars that come here are our friends and family, mostly in the daytime. Obviously I said we can have who we like at our house at any time, day or night. We very rarely have any visitors coming and going late at night.

My husband joined us at this point. They have spoken to him before, in English. They heard him ask me if I was ok, in English, when he joined us. My husband is British, born here, but he isn’t white. They asked him if he spoke English. 🤔 He stayed polite and told them that his English was as good as theirs being as he had lived here his whole life.

They said the current lights need to be removed and we can’t have lights at Xmas. My husband asked what the issue was and they said the flashing. My husband said the current lights that are up do not flash and there is no flash option. The called him a liar. He invited them to come and look at them in the garage to prove it to them but they refused. My husband said that we will make sure the lights at Xmas (which are warm white for those asking) will be on the static setting. They said no, we need to not have them at all. My husband said we will have the lights on our house because it is our house. The man then called my husband a fucking <racial slur> and told him to ‘go home’. My husband said would you like the opportunity to apologise for your racist comments and they said no and walked off. This is all captured on camera.

Our son thinks we should go to the police but my husband said just leave it and unfortunately he has dealt with worse racism, which I know he has as I’ve been with him when he has received it. I’m really fucking angry. He’s quiet.

We have spoken to the couple next door as they text when they heard the neighbours shouting at us, to ask if we were ok. I’ve explained what has happened which was awkward as they are both British but from the same heritage as my husband. This couple have actually done a few jobs to help the racist couple out but said they won’t be doing that again. They are also going to tell the couple next to them about the racism as they are also non white although different heritage.

They are racist bastards and we won’t be talking to them again. So that’s us and at least 2, possibly 3 sets of neighbours who don’t like them because of their moaning and now racist comments.

I’ve asked my husband to please consider reporting this with the footage we have. Our children are also not white and I feel it’s important to show them that we will not accept this for them even if my husband can brush it aside.

We have joked that we’ll be having our lights on the fastest flashing setting we can find this Christmas. Our next door neighbours have said they’ll put lights up from now on. I don’t know if they will but it was nice of them to show their support.

Not sure if you allowed to do this in the UK, but here it goes anyhow.

Can you invite all the neighbors except them out to "hear" the recording from the Ring or whatever was used to record it? Maybe with a large speaker and let everyone sit and hear the truth about these people. Letting them be publicly embarrassed might be a cure for a few of THEIR ills.

ScartlettSole · 02/09/2026 18:08

DancingNotDrowning · 02/09/2026 07:24

Every second bar/restaurant near me has fairy lights or old fashioned bulb strings criss crossing their outside seating space.

I’ve never come across anyone complaining it’s tacky or migraine inducing, showy or intrusive.

MN is another world sometimes.

It's as people have forgotten street lights and curtains exist 😂

LouiseK93 · 02/09/2026 18:07

Honestly, I know neighbours like this. If they werent complaining about this it would be something else. Keep them up. All the comments like 'did you leave any for the shop' rather than being direct with you to begin with speaks volumes about them.
Edit: are the Jehovahs Witnesses by any chance? All the neighbours ive had that behaved this way were Jehovahs.

Bargarran · 02/09/2026 14:36

It is, though.

Have you ever met someone who uses the phrase, ‘racism card’ who isn’t racist?!

RaininSummer · 02/09/2026 18:03

Wow... I was on the side of lights are a nothing until the update. Now I vote for lots of lights and maybe you and the other nice neighbours should have a noisy street party for Halloween.

Yep.

SugarandMice · 02/09/2026 09:23

I doubt they give her a migraine, she probably just thinks they are tacky as hell but couldn’t find a nice way to say it. No doubt all your other neighbours are quietly thinking the same.

Watch "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and then go to town like Chevy Chase!

What horrid, inconsiderate, racist neighbors they are. Bravo to you both for not tossing them off your property. Save the footage, because you may need it.

lol at autumn! Kids are still on summer hols, don’t wish your life away!

I wish! My kids have been back at school for three weeks.

dentalflosser · 02/09/2026 17:48

I think the nasty neighbours behaviour is disgraceful, how dare they treat you and your DH like that and the clearly racist attitude from them makes me feel this needs to be reported. They can’t tell you what you can’t have in your garden, who can visit and when and how you should be parking and moving around on your drive OP. The racism needs stopping immediately and I’m pleased your nice neighbours are united in solidarity.

AllotmentOtter · 02/09/2026 17:47

Okay, so while I was reading your OP I was siding with the neighbours because I'm a miserable baggage who doesn't really like outdoor lights anyway.

Then I got to the MNHQ klaxon bit and read all your updates.

I now think you should festoon your house with as many lights as you can get, and get the other neighbours to join in. I also think you and your nice neighbours should have regular nighttime get togethers, driving to each others houses so that all the guests can drive the right way back down the drive with the headlights on full beam.

Fucking moany, racist bastard neighbours can fuck right off.

PrawnFree · 02/09/2026 17:43

Bogliasco · 02/09/2026 17:38

You were right about them and spotting their pattern of controlling behaviour but to ramp it up to racial slurs is absolutely unforgivable.

I understand your husband brushing it off if he's received worse in the past but he shouldn't have to live on a road where blatant racism goes unchallenged. They need to be warned by the police not to do it again.

I so hope your road becomes the brightest road in the neighbourhood come December 1st!

Why? because the neighbour is racist?
