AIBU to keep our lights up despite neighbour complaining?

We moved into our house just before Christmas last year. We are one of 6 houses on a lane in an u shape and our house is directly opposite one of the other houses. All of the houses are set back so we are not close to the houses opposite.

When we moved in last year, we put up lights on our house and in two of our trees at the front of our house as well as 2 nutcrackers and a Christmas wreath on the door. Nothing garish, just white lights. Every time we saw the neighbours opposite they would comment on the lights and decorations. They said things like that’s is a lot of lights, did you leave any in the shop for anyone else, we certainly can’t miss you etc. We took the lights down in January.

This is now our first autumn in the house and my husband has put up some lights along the front of the house, a garland around the front door and a wreath on the door. We went out for the evening and have come home to a note from the neighbour opposite which said she doesn’t like the lights, none of the past neighbours have ever put them up and that the lights will give her migraines like the ones we put up at Christmas did. She would like us to remove the lights.

How do we respond to this? My husband thinks we just ignore it but I said she will talk to us when we see her if we don’t go over and talk to her about it. He said he’ll tell her not to look at the lights. What would you say? We obviously plan to put the lights up for Christmas again this year so that isn’t going to go down well either.

We know she has moaned about other things to some of the other neighbours like their grandchildren playing outside on their bikes so she seems to be a moaner.

It Is unreasonable to put up lights as decorations. It’s light pollution and has an adverse effect on wildlife, especially insects.

You’ve misunderstood, The stupid prejudices would encompass attitudes to décor or garden design, for example.
Racism was dealt with in my early paragraphs, in which I think I’ve not trivialised it.

I think the unfolding of the racism involved in this brouhaha still doesn't make it ‘all systems go’ for the Blackpool Illuminations at home.
That’s still potentially an issue (other) neighbours may wish to see dealt with thoughtfully, and those antagonistic racist couple would be better answered with full legal heft, and exposure.
Their transgression shouldnt condemn the whole street/cul de sac to unwelcome bright light just to show them their racism cannot win.

OP has said the other neighbours are fine with the lights with some having their own this year in solidarity.

Even if OP reports them, which I hope they do, nothing much will happen to them unfortunately. They will suffer far more from the other neighbours showing they are standing together. They are doing that with lights and by no longer helping them with bins, watering plants and other jobs. Hopefully the racists will be forced to move. Or maybe they’ll die from the stress of it. What a loss to the world that would be. Not. A couple less racists!

They’ve been back and it went worse than expected. Some people really are nasty fucks.

They said before they talk about the lights, we need to start keeping our cat inside because it’s using their garden as a toilet. We don’t have a cat and told them that. We have never had a cat.

Next was that we need to not drive out of our driveway at night, but reverse due to the headlights. We are allowed to drive out in daytime. Obviously I said no and that they can’t control what we do.

Next it was unknown cars coming to our house when it’s dark. It needs to stop because they’re unable to sleep. The only ‘unknown’ cars that come here are our friends and family, mostly in the daytime. Obviously I said we can have who we like at our house at any time, day or night. We very rarely have any visitors coming and going late at night.

My husband joined us at this point. They have spoken to him before, in English. They heard him ask me if I was ok, in English, when he joined us. My husband is British, born here, but he isn’t white. They asked him if he spoke English. 🤔 He stayed polite and told them that his English was as good as theirs being as he had lived here his whole life.

They said the current lights need to be removed and we can’t have lights at Xmas. My husband asked what the issue was and they said the flashing. My husband said the current lights that are up do not flash and there is no flash option. The called him a liar. He invited them to come and look at them in the garage to prove it to them but they refused. My husband said that we will make sure the lights at Xmas (which are warm white for those asking) will be on the static setting. They said no, we need to not have them at all. My husband said we will have the lights on our house because it is our house. The man then called my husband a fucking <racial slur> and told him to ‘go home’. My husband said would you like the opportunity to apologise for your racist comments and they said no and walked off. This is all captured on camera.

Our son thinks we should go to the police but my husband said just leave it and unfortunately he has dealt with worse racism, which I know he has as I’ve been with him when he has received it. I’m really fucking angry. He’s quiet.

We have spoken to the couple next door as they text when they heard the neighbours shouting at us, to ask if we were ok. I’ve explained what has happened which was awkward as they are both British but from the same heritage as my husband. This couple have actually done a few jobs to help the racist couple out but said they won’t be doing that again. They are also going to tell the couple next to them about the racism as they are also non white although different heritage.

They are racist bastards and we won’t be talking to them again. So that’s us and at least 2, possibly 3 sets of neighbours who don’t like them because of their moaning and now racist comments.

I’ve asked my husband to please consider reporting this with the footage we have. Our children are also not white and I feel it’s important to show them that we will not accept this for them even if my husband can brush it aside.

We have joked that we’ll be having our lights on the fastest flashing setting we can find this Christmas. Our next door neighbours have said they’ll put lights up from now on. I don’t know if they will but it was nice of them to show their support.

Oh no no no having read your updates....they are not and never going to be approachable or reasonable and are blatantly racist and unbelievably entitled!! Now I feel like bringing 6000 lights to your house. Disgusting people.

They're serving the purpose of standing up to racists.

Indeed. And also OP likes them and it’s her house.

Suddenly everyone is concerned about wildlife because they don’t like lights. I’ve never seen so much concern about wildlife on mumsnet.

LilyBunch25 · 02/09/2026 23:28

Autumn lights..? I mean I have a lot of lights in my back garden all year round but they're only really visible to us. I only put lights out front over Christmas.

PeachesxBDA · 02/09/2026 23:17

Mazza888 · 02/09/2026 23:07

Take them down - what possible purpose are they serving? Maybe put a few in your back garden if the compulsion to have lights is so strong (the solar ones) but my gripe is really about you deterring wildlife from roaming. We have light in the day so there’s no need to prolong it artificially in the night. External lights are unnecessary & thoughtless, imo.

They're serving the purpose of standing up to racists.

PeachesxBDA · 02/09/2026 23:14

I'm so sorry for your experience. That us appalling. I'm glad you have reported them. And yes, to all your light supporting neighbours!

OP has said the lights are staying, as they should. It’s their house and they can do what they like. The racism just means she doesn’t even need to try to be polite to them now.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 02/09/2026 23:13

We had a neighbour who had decorative lights on in their garden all year round.

That looked naff, tacky, annoying and cheap. People referred to them as like living on a fairground.

This neighbour moved out a couple of months ago.

I have a community, very bright security light on the wall outside of my bedroom window. Moth City.

So l have a black out blind. Which l don't mind. Because the security light makes me feel secure.

WordFinder · 02/09/2026 23:11

TheDenimPoet · 02/09/2026 22:46

If they are particularly bright, they would certainly trigger one for me. It is absolutely possible.

OPs house sounds a long way from the racist neighbours. If her migraine is triggered by far away lights, it just tough really. We can’t expect no one to have lights.

There are obviously no migraines anyway and the neighbours are racially bullying OPs family. She hadn’t complained about other neighbours Xmas lights, who just happened to be white. Funny that!

Even if someone has migraines triggered by lights, they don’t get to tell others they can’t have lights. I get migraines and wouldn’t dream of telling anyone they can’t have their lights up for Christmas, Autumn or anything else.

MsColumbo · 02/09/2026 23:09

Can the closer neighbours get wind chimes too? Maybe it can be a present for your entire street. 🙃

Please keep us updated. Awful behaviour like this definitely needs to be reported and good for your family for taking a stand. 🤍

Surely you switch them off when you retire at night though. (Leaving them on overnight just to confuse foxes and mess around with birdlife is very poor behaviour)
Not the main point at this stage of course; I hope you whack those neighbours with the full force of any available anti-harassment legislation, and it’s good to know you've supportive neighbours.

All the same, light pollution is a scourge for human neighbours as well as for wildlife, so I’m sure you take all these things into consideration, no matter how far your legal right to displaying lights extends.

Out-of-season accoutrements of cultural festivals can upset people, who might feel the mid-Winter, Christmassy cheer of fairy lights adorning trees and houses loses all its particular joy when it’s spread across the whole year like aerosol cream.
Others might just be of the anti-showy sort, bristling against having these celebratory decorations forced on them for more than the generally agreed few weeks in December, feeling the atmosphere’s balance is tilted over into mild hysteria when it’s allowed out of its usual festive bounds.

Barring local statutes insisting on monochrome shop fronts or a ban on fake carriage lights on Georgian townhouses, etc, we’re all free to decorate our houses as we see fit.
I think our unstated contract with our neighbours still carries the hope that in practice, we will restrain our inner Zandra Rhodes/ Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen.

Conversely, we also understand that we will not insist on conformity when any extravagance in exterior appearance just happens to irritate us, based on stupid prejudices and bottled up frustration.
Unless we are physically or economically injured by the offending décor, we definitely ought to practice acceptance.

Sorry, are you calling racism “stupid prejudices” or have I misunderstood?! Wow.

ChristmasLightsLover · 02/09/2026 23:05

Big love @AutumnLighting, big flashy lighting love, from me, Christmas Lights Lover.

Ours will be up early. Static. But early. And will only go off end of February. We need light in the darkness. I am so sorry that you have racist dipshits for neighbours but also; am equally relieved that there’s some solidarity with the rest of your close.

Bogliasco · 02/09/2026 22:54

PrawnFree · 02/09/2026 17:43

Why? because the neighbour is racist?

I think you might have misinterpreted my comment because your comment doesn't make sense to me in the context of what I wrote and what I meant. If you can clarify your question I'm happy to answer it.

Kickinthenostalgia · 02/09/2026 22:49

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 01/09/2026 22:54

Do they flash? If so, you are being pretty unreasonable. If they give her a migraine it's pretty unkind to keep them up.

He’ll no, you can’t control what your neighbours do because you don’t like something. thats not how it works. At the end of the day people can do what they want on thier property. It’s not breaking any laws by having decorations up.

Kickinthenostalgia · 02/09/2026 22:47

She’d hate to live opposite us, we have our Christmas lights, and it’s a whole scene, lights and novelty lights all across the front garden. We always get people knocking to say how brilliant they are, kids stop outside and watch the Christmas movie we’ve made on the projector. The entitlement of some people is unreal. Your house, your choice.

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 02/09/2026 22:45

I’m so sorry OP, this is all so horrible. What a horrible realisation that you have racist bullies as neighbours.

On the topic of lights, I’m surprised at how many people don’t like decorations (yours sound very nice and I think the idea of decorating at Autumn is lovely).

BotterMon · 02/09/2026 22:40

Team OP. So sorry you have such horrible neighbours but they are in the minority and the others sound great.

Throw a big street party and don't invite the horrible ones!

EveningSpread · 02/09/2026 22:35

Wow, that took a turn! I came here all ready to say YABU to have loads of lights up but it sounds like your neighbours are really VERY unreasonable, and racist to boot!

I’ve still never heard of “autumn lights” as a concept/thing, though! Link to the lights or an example image???

cantbebothered101 · 02/09/2026 22:30

Rpop · 02/09/2026 21:27

I’ve got photophobia with migraines too. It seems like a made up fussy thing but it’s really. I can be sensitive for a whole week at a time. I genuinely think the flashing ones could be a problem. If they don’t flash then she hopefully can just look away if she gets close (though obviously I can’t imagine the set up). I guess it just depends how reasonable it all is or whether it’s insanely bright.

why on god’s earth would anyone worry about whether the plonker racist neighbours get migraines or not 🙄

pusspuss9 · 02/09/2026 09:51

I'm lost here. What's this got to do with racism?? Is having a light racist?
