To still be hurt and angry that I was ‘Wendied’ 15 years ago

DH and I were very friendly with a group of people, 3 couples. They came to our wedding, one of the men was my husbands best man etc. We all had children around the same time. Kids all got on in school and were invited to each others parties etc.

Then, two other couples joined the group, one woman was always a ‘Queen Bee’ type but nice enough, the other got a job as teacher in our small local primary school.

The teacher taught my daughter but unfortunately I had some issues with the school and had to raise a complaint eventually. Suddenly I was the complete outcast, the group closed up and ostracised myself and DH, despite the complaint not being directed at this teacher.

We lost our friendship group and even wider friends in one fell swoop which hurt so much. I suspect that the teacher (who is so far up her own backside she can kiss her teeth) did her level best to drag our names through the mud even though we had a legitimate complaint to make about the school and how they were treating a number of children who were set to go to a secondary school that wasn’t the choice of the school. Not one of them have actually ever had the guts to speak to me or tell me what I was meant to have done and even 15 years later it hurts when I see them and they blank me.

I’d love to ask them what their problem is after all this time, it was a hurtful, childish and ‘mean girl’ thing to do. I’d have preferred it if one of them had the guts to actually tell me at the time that I’d done something to upset someone. All I can think of is the school complaint. I can absolutely guarantee that if there was an issue with the schooling of one of their children they would have done exactly the same thing.

  1. Nobody DOES need to be reminded of that. It couldn't be more obvious. We only hear one side of the story in every AIBU thread, by definition. How else could it work?

  2. We STILL only know one side of the story. All you've added is some computer-generated speculation.

  1. It could not be more obvious that this is not obvious to many people in this thread.
  2. What exactly do you think would have been different about it if I had written it by hand?

Quite. It's not called "AIBU with the caveat that if you ask the person I'm talking about they will say IABU"

It’s only pointless if you don’t think people need to be reminded they’ve only heard one side of the story.

Whereas it’s abundantly clear from the comments here that people do.

Pointless, groundless speculation is still pointless and groundless if you get a computer to do it for you.

If it really is eating up at you then perhaps next time you see one of them then ask outright. After 15 years of enduring this uncertainty you might get the answer and you have nothing to lose.

Here is Queen Bee’s side of the story, as written by ChatGPT:

To be accused of “Wendying” someone 15 years ago when actually the friendship had run its course

I’m wondering how people would feel if they discovered that someone they used to be friends with 15 years ago still believed they had deliberately orchestrated an entire friendship group to ostracise them.

Years ago DH and I became friendly with a group of couples in our village. Some of them had known each other for years before I came along. Our children were all roughly the same age and naturally there were parties, school things, barbecues etc.

One woman in the group — I’ll call her A — was married to one of the men who’d been part of the friendship group for years.

A always seemed slightly uncomfortable with the group dynamic. She regularly made it clear that she and her husband “preferred doing their own thing” and weren’t interested in the sort of holidays, weekends away and activities some of us enjoyed together. Which was absolutely fine, but over time it inevitably meant the rest of us became closer because we were actually spending more time together.

Around the same period, another friend started working at the local primary school.

A then became extremely unhappy with something happening at the school involving her child and several other children. I’m deliberately being vague because it involved children.

She was perfectly entitled to complain.
The problem, from our point of view, wasn’t that she complained.

It was that she became absolutely consumed by it.

Every conversation seemed to come back to how badly the school was behaving, how unfair the head was, how certain children were being discriminated against and how other parents apparently didn’t understand what was going on.

She describes herself now as having been “principled and outspoken”. I suspect other people might remember it as angry, relentless and increasingly difficult to be around.

It also became incredibly awkward because one of our friends actually worked at the school.

A seemed convinced that this friend was somehow part of the establishment she was fighting against, despite the complaint not actually being about her. There was a strange undertone whenever they were together. A has subsequently said she deliberately refused to “fawn” over the teacher like everyone else supposedly did.

That comment probably illustrates the problem better than anything.

Nobody was fawning over anybody.

We were friends.

Eventually people simply stopped inviting A to things.

There wasn’t a meeting.

There wasn’t some dramatic conversation where I announced that A was to be expelled from the village.

Nobody was instructed to delete her from Facebook.

Different people reached the same conclusion independently: spending time with her had become uncomfortable.

I suspect from her perspective it happened suddenly because she didn’t realise how strained things had become.

From ours it had been building for months.

The other slightly awkward part is that A has always assumed I was the “Queen Bee” because DH and I had more money than some of the others and because people sometimes did similar things to us.

Apparently we bought a caravan and then several friends bought caravans.

Yes.

Because we all had young children, somebody suggested caravanning, we enjoyed going away together and some of the others decided it looked fun.

It wasn’t a cult.

Nobody was required to purchase a Bailey Unicorn to retain membership.

Over the years the friendships naturally became very close. We holidayed together, our children grew up together and we supported each other through various things.

A apparently regards that as “enmeshed”.

We regarded it as friendship.

Her husband still chats perfectly happily to the men when he sees them, which perhaps ought to suggest that this wasn’t some coordinated vendetta against their entire family.

I also gather she believes the teacher “dragged her name through the mud”.
I genuinely don’t remember her doing that.

What I do remember is A repeatedly telling people that the teacher was up herself, that other parents fawned over her and that she herself was too principled to behave like that.

She may not realise how contemptuous she sometimes sounded.

Fifteen years later, if I passed A in the village I probably wouldn’t stop for a conversation.

Not because I’m still furious about a school complaint from 2011.

Because we haven’t been friends for fifteen years.

If she suddenly confronted me in the street demanding to know “what my problem is after all these years”, I’d probably be completely taken aback.

There isn’t a problem.

There’s just a friendship that ended a very long time ago.

And if I’m completely truthful, the idea that I’ve spent fifteen years controlling several grown women, arranging their holidays, influencing their purchases and instructing them whom they’re allowed to speak to is rather more flattering to my organisational abilities than reality deserves.

Pointless, groundless speculation is still pointless and groundless if you get a computer to do it for you.

We are definitely seeing only one side of the story here.

As with literally every AIBU thread ever.

HowardsWahey · 02/09/2026 17:44

Notbuiltforheat · 02/09/2026 00:30

No. A lot of people take the path of least resistance. It’s shitty when you’re on the other end, but it’s true.

This is exactly it. @HouseBee nailed it earlier. The only thing OP did wrong was to rock the boat. Most people want a quiet life - and for people like that, whether the OP's complaint was justified or not is neither here or there. The fact is that someone with influence got angry over it and she wouldn't back down to keep the peace.

A similar thing happened to my parents many years ago. Their supposed best friends did a terrible thing to them. A depressing number of people in their wider group decided it was easier to blame my parents for not "forgiving and forgetting" than to blame the scum for their behaviour in the first place.

Imanautumn · 02/09/2026 16:47

pricecap · 01/09/2026 18:48

Yes they seem to have, it’s only bothered me today as I’ve just passed one of them now and I was completely blanked.

It sounds ridiculous when I think about it, I can only think it was the complaint to the school that was the cause. It was a legitimate complaint too!

We lost two couples immediately who got very close with the teacher and the queen bee - then I noticed about 2 other couples associated with them had deleted me off Facebook. I couldn’t believe it!

We all live in a small village, I have no doubt that my name is still mud in the group. Teacher is still the main instigator and they all dance to her tune as much as I can see…winds me up!!! 😂😂😂

That is really sad and really unfair. They may be ignoring you as they know they were in the wrong. Totally understand why it would still hurt.

The men weren’t terribly close I suppose, they still chat and talk when they see one another now, husband included. It was the women element here that had it in for me. It was a strange dynamic anyway as I wasn’t originally from the area so when I met my husband I was already an outsider. I was included but it seemed as soon as they had an excuse to blank me they did.
Its definitely small village mentality, they enmeshed themselves into each others lives to a ridiculous extent, holidaying together, doing everything together. I would never had wanted that as we prefer to do our own thing. I just don’t like being blanked, even after all these years.
However, I’ve decided, the next time I see any one of them I will be asking them what their problem is after all these years

You know, it could simply be that they don't want to be friends with you. None of us know why that is.

Strip away all the name-calling and silly accusations, and basically, there is a close friend group in your village, who obviously really like each other, love spending time together, but don't seem to like you in the same way, and you're not part of that group.

I think - from the wording of your posts - that you could have a very skewed view of things, and many years have now passed. I think if you actually 'confronted' someone now, you could risk appearing to be a bit ridiculous.

My bigger issue would be my husband still socialising with the husbands of these so called women... Something doesn't add up with this scenario

KarminaBurana · 02/09/2026 10:39

Surely, after 15 years, a lot has happened in your life? I was just thinking about my last 15 years; my DC did GCSEs, A levels, went to uni, moved out, started independent lives, we've had COVID, some health scares and surgeries, elderly members of the family dying, new ones born, people migrating, people adopting, people divorcing.
Stop focussing on the past. This can't be the only thing that's happened to you? Don't you have any ongoing concerns?.

augustusglupe · 02/09/2026 10:33

The term friendship group makes me think of a group of bitchy 14 year olds.. and Wendying or whatever?! Christ I’d run a mile from that lot 🤦🏻‍♀️
