Any other London folk mortified by the Notting Hill carnival? Hundreds of arrests, lewd behaviour, vulgarity and litter. It does not represent my culture. It’s an embarrassment.

I understood a lot of the arrests happened before the start of the carnival. Also face recognition was used by the police which led to the arrest of quite few of the participants so might not have been to do with incidents at the carnival itself. This might go some way in accounting for the large number of arrests..

And guns. Don’t forget the guy that was arrested and found to be carrying a gun.

I told my DC this weekend not to even bother asking if they can go to the Stabbing Hill Carnival, not a chance. The answer will always be no. Up to them when they are adults of course but I’d hope by then they are able to make sensible choices.

We have had a shooting in our town centre. And that didnt need a carnival

At Glastonbury the organisers have to pay to clear up the mess which is presumably funded by ticket sales.
I assume the taxpayers have to pay to clear up the mess from the Carnival.

I wonder how much the policing at Tommy Yaxley-6-Names's marches costs us?

Yes I’m sure no one has ever been arrested at a festival in Somerset…. Apparently the home of carnival

There might be the odd arrest during carnival season, which runs from the end of September to the end of November and takes place in 12 different towns here in Somerset, but it's very rare.
The carnivals date back to the foiling of the gun powder plot, you yes, arguably the home of carnival. It gurt lush night out for all the family and brings local communities together

I live right at the epicentre of the carnival and was here all weekend. It was actually all rather lovely - a very relaxed vibe, very good humoured and less crowded than a lot of years. You can't have hundreds of thousands of people - in fact 2 million people go the carnival! - on the streets without having some troublemakers and some arrests. It's a tiny minority. How many arrests do you think there are in London every day.

I've lived here for 40 years. It's part of the culture. I think it reflect sa lot of what is great about multi-cultural London - people mingleing, celebratin Afro-Caribbean culture with food, music and fun.

As a resident I did used to get a bit tired of it and think it happening every year was maybe too much but I've re-embraced it and stay her all weekend and can dip in and out. It's fantastic to have a street carnival like this in one of the best cities in the world.

And yes, of course there is little litter: RBKC do a great job of tidying up afterwards. The roads were completely clear this morning, although the pavements still need a bit of work but within a couple of days all will be gone and people had a great time.

It was the same after the wonderful Arsenal Parade earlier this year. I was in that all day and it was jous and yet the right wing press could only nbang on about arrest. There were 1.5 million people on the streets. Of course, there were arrests.

I find it deeply depressing that people immediately assume it was terrible. It really wasn't. It was pretty grat.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I think it's deeply interesting that there are at least 3 of us who live on the route or in the epicentre and we're all saying that, aside from isolated incidents, it's an absolutely fine, lovely weekend. It's the people who live nowhere nearby, many of whom have never been, who think it's evil incarnate.

What kind of anti social behavior typically happens?

The 2025 arrest breakdown: mostly drugs, then weapons, violence, and sexual offences. it’s the weapons and violence figures/ arrests that set it apart from other festivals. plus things like stabbings year on year, which just don’t feature at music festivals.

Jane379 · 01/09/2026 21:21

Livelovebehappy · 01/09/2026 20:57

Well hundreds of arrests suggest that anti social behaviour was pretty rife. Don’t you agree?

Sorry for the confusion, I was reading something else about the Carnival and mixed it up with your post. I thought you meant anti social behaviour aside from murders.

YABU. It’s no different to behaviour at the festivals going on.

True and it's the same complaints every year for NHC.
Such a shame because the organisers and participants put a hug effort into those amazing costumes.

Are you living under a rock? Stabbings are pretty antisocial by anyone’s standards.

Re Carribean countries with carnivals, it seems they police them far more strictly than we do.

British Carribean police officer Leroy Logan has some good suggestions. He agrees we should relocate it to Hyde Park.

: 'Compared with European festivals of a similar size, the festival is held in a particularly dense section of the city, and so gangs are attracted to NHC to commit crimes and/or settle feuds before disappearing into the crowd. Consideration should be given to changing the location to Hyde Park, or somewhere that is more open, to assist in policing it more effectively.'

Not Hyde Park, please!

Maybe somewhere like Brockwell Park/Mitcham? Notting Hill really not appropriate.

It’s long been a bone of contention, as the anti social behaviour which increases year on year is pretty much ignored by the police. Another classic example of two tier policing.

Millions loved the Notting Hill carnival but there was too much crime. As an ex-cop, I could make it better | Leroy Logan

There are new calls to ban the event, but with fresh thinking and official recognition of its true value, we can silence the critics, says former Met superintendent Leroy Logan

someone shat in the street at carnival? how bizarre, I've been going for nearly 2 decades an have never seen that. but then again the council only provided some toilets in the past 5 years. prior to that people were renting out loos in their homes. maybe they had diarrhoea but thats an extremely rare occurrence.

the going rate this year was £5 or £10 for queue jump!

Genuinely I don't know what people expect. You can't ban it. People would just have private parties that would over spill and have no oversight on at all. An organised event at least manages it all to an extent.

A situation where people just celebrated it unofficially would be far worse and the policing would be worse as a result too.

The whole point is it is effectively the party for lower income multi ethnic families who can't afford tickets to a paid event.

There isn't just a racist element to this, there's also a class one.

Jane379 · 01/09/2026 19:46

I don't understand why it can't be ticketed and at least partly relocated. It was originally in Notting Hill but it has changed a lot: it's a lot bigger for one. Change sometimes has to happen, especially when lives are at risk.

The 2024 Met Police report is worrying reading.

Twerking in next to no clothes, simulating sex acts. It’s not what anyone should see on the streets of London to be honest. It feels very demonic but that’s for another day!

'Demonic'- that seems a bit dramatic, may I ask if you are evangelical?

I do agree it's gross and imo unacceptable. Would that qualify as public indecency- simulating sex acts?

I'm sure the original carnival wasn't like that : like a lot of elements, the dances seem to have escalated in recent years.

ProudBlackMomma · 01/09/2026 19:30

Jane379 · 01/09/2026 18:34

Can I ask what you mean by 'lewd behaviour '? The dancing or something else?

I had read that dance hall lyrics and dance moves have become increasingly sexualised since the 1990s and TikTok has motivated some to dance in more extreme ways. Is this what you were referring to?

There were 2 reported stabbing incidents at this year's carnival. There are on average 30 knife related incidents a day in London.
We often used to see 5+ stabbings on a Friday night in the ED of the London hospital I worked in. So hardly stabfest.

Jane379 · 01/09/2026 19:24

How do carnivals in the Carribean cope? After all this is where the Notting Hill carnival traditions originate from.

I assume they are smaller and do not attract crime in the same way? It would be interesting to see how they are managed over there.
