days are drifting longer and longer, until they're 30 then 34 then 40 ets hours long.

would you live your life by the 24 hour clock and accept dark and light comes bad goes randomly or try to live by the sun up, day, sun down, night?

bearing in mind at some point daylight will last 24 odd hours, similarly night too.

DH think real time - sun up, sun down

aibu to think the only sanity is 24 hours makes a day, get some black out curtains for the light nights?

"would you live your life by the 24 hour clock and accept dark and light comes bad goes randomly or try to live by the sun up, day, sun down, night?"
Well I currently do neither. Lifelong insomniac, often awake well into the small hours (as I am again tonight), so apparently free from the influence of either the clock or the sun. Left to my own devices I have, in the past, settled into a roughly 28-hour 'day', and gone completely around the clock to re-co-ordinate with the rest of the world.

I have considered I may be an alien from a planet with a 28-hour day.

if that's fascinating, I wonder what my natural circadian rhythm would be without obligation and sunrise?

Mine's about 30 hours. It's really bloody annoying.

I guess I only need to live another eleventy billion years and I'll be in sync with the Earth's circadian rhythm. Oh, hang on. Won't the Sun have started dimming by then? So the daylight will only be a gloomy sort of red.
I'm doomed either way 😂

Hycosaneyedrops · 01/09/2026 02:33

I already have practically no sleep routine and work a mixture of days & nights anyway so I’d probably just wing it.

The idea of 24 hours of darkness is exciting though. 24 hours of daylight sounds like hell.

I find this interesting. What do you do about work though?

I'm too disabled to work anyway so that's never been an issue. I do sometimes struggle to be awake at the right times for things like family birthday parties and doctors appointments but overall dealing with that is far easier than coping with how awful I felt all the time trying to stick to a 24 hour cycle.

My late OH had a similar issue with sleeping where he'd stay awake about 12 hours and then have a 3-4 hour nap and only have a "proper" full nights sleep once a week or two. It helped us get through being stuck in a small flat together through 4 year of lockdown/shielding as we both got time alone while the other slept as well as plenty of time together.

Hypernychthemeral syndrome. It's hell!

Bryonyberries · 01/09/2026 06:56

I’d imagine it would be so gradual that life would evolve to the new cycle.

If it happened now we would probably still have our 24 natural cycle and it would be like living at the poles where they adapt to 6 months of dark then 6 months of light.

Somersetbaker · 01/09/2026 06:59

It won't happen. The rotation is powered by cat dreams, there has to be a cat asleep somewhere or the world will stop turning and the cats aren't taking any chances.

Only if its gorilla glue. 😂

My bedroom Is in permanent daylight anyway because of the street light directly outside my bedroom window that I didnt notice when I viewed this house in daylight.

As a rule I don’t tend to take advice about end of the world events from people who can’t use the correct ‘there, their they’re’

WrigglyDonCat · 01/09/2026 07:10

Sure, but not in your lifetime. From my distant undergrad memory I think years are estimated to have been about 21 hours long at the start of the Phanerozoic (c. 540 million years ago).

Assuming a linear progression (and spoiler alert, it almost certainly isn't - I suspect the rate of change of day length is gradually decreasing but can't be bothered to go and check), my back of an envelope calculation suggests that is roughly 1 five millionth of an hour per year.

This isn't going to solve your shortness of time issues any time soon...

Not only was the OP obviously positing a hypothetical scenario, but they used "they're" correctly.

So nice job embarrassing yourself.

OP, I think you might have to ask HQ to put "hypothetical scenario" in your thread title. So many hard of thinkingfolks are taking it as a literal end of days prediction 😂

There’s a book with exactly this plot - the age of miracles - where some people start to live according to sunlight and others stick to 24 hours. It’s a really great book told from the perspective of a young teen.

DoAWheelie · 01/09/2026 00:51

I already live outside of the standard 24 hour cycle, so I probably wouldn't start trying to follow the daylight and stick to what suits my body best.

I spent years with insomnia and depression, lying awake every night stressing out that I couldn't sleep and spending every day exhausted. I finally started to listen to my body and now only go to bed when I feel tired and stay there until I feel rested. I've been mentally well and more able to cope with my other health issues since doing this and I don't plan on stopping.

Some days I'm only awake 6-8 hours before I need to sleep again, sometimes I'm awake as long as 30 hours. On average I sleep about 9 or 10 hours but sometimes it's as long as 14. A normal calendar month is usually around 24 "days" for me but it can swing a couple either side.

that sounds like you've really found the routine that works for you x

How so ?

Gravity is a function of mass and distance.

F = G(m1m2)/R2

What would happen in your scenario is that weights would change. Because of a combination of the equatorial bulge, and the effects of centripetal acceleration. The weight difference at the poles V the Equator is something like 0.5 %. A slower rotating earth would reduce this difference, because the equatorial centripetal component would reduce.

The Equatorial bulge might be an issue though. It's not very big. Only about 40 km difference between the diameter around the equator and through the poles. But slowing the rotation of the earth would reduce the centripetal forces, and this slight bulge would reduce. So there would likely be a lot of earthquakes. I think the sea level would change too. Reduce around the equator and increase towards the polls.

It would also be a lot hotter/ colder all over. Because the sun hits the earth with about 100 watts of energy per square meter, perpendicular to the sun. So if a day increased in length by 50%, so would the amount of suns energy hitting it increase by 50%. And the side in shadow would have 50% more cooling time to radiate heat out to the universe. So really hot days and really cold nights would result. And that would really mess up the railways, among other things.

But if you are a flat earther, none of the above matters. Because their earth model takes none of this into account And no, I am not a flerth. But I have argued/ debated loads of them.

the heat and cold are definitely considerations for when to sleep etc. and if you stick to 24 hours do you want to be sending kids to school in the coldest part of the night or trying to sleep in the hottest.

for those saying "uh, stupid, this already HAPPENS" well no, months of "day" and months of "night" are a very different scenario, and comes with it's own problems

I think it might be too hot to live.

Consider the recent UK heatwaves. Get to the hottest point of the say, then there is another 20 hours of blazing sunlight to come before the sun sets and the area around you can start to cool.

It would be like a conveyor belt pizza oven. And we are the pizza. The belt stops and we cant switch the heating element off.

except it's more like one day or darks and one day is light then 25 then 26 etc. and the extreme heat and cold in the middle of those

You’re missing a comma here:

the correct ‘there, their they’re’

You are also missing hyphens to make “end of the world” into a phrasal adjective when talking about end-of-the-world events.

Furthermore you have omitted full stops from the end of several sentences, and started one with a lowercase letter.

You obviously care a lot about other people’s grammar, and I’m very happy to help you with yours so that in future you can come across as less of a hypocrite.
