AIBU to make a roast when my daughter asked me not to?

Adult daughter 22 is not a fan of roast dinners. She asked me if I could not do a roast dinner today and make something else which I agreed to. However I had a chicken in freezer that needed using up today but I did make a pasta bake which is something she likes as an alternative. I like to make a family dinner on a Sunday for us all. Daughter was disappointed about the roast but I explained to her I had to use chicken up but I did make something she liked as alternative. She said to me you told me you wouldn’t make a roast and she looked upset. She didn’t go hungry though as she had Cottage Pie after saying there’s nothing to eat. AIBU to of made the roast even though there was pasta dish as alternative or was she being unreasonable here as I feel bad about it.

So you agree that the DD should be angry because the others had a roast and she had her very own pasta bake? The better option was she cooked fir herself, even though the roast wasn’t for her?

You think that OPs got a chuffing cheek? For cooking a whole separate meal for the DD?

Just wow!!

I never stated anybody should be angry. You have made that up!

I just think its odd that OP is making lame excuses about a chicken in the freezer that needed to be used. I think many have missed the point here.... OP should of just said in the 1st place we all like a roast so I will cook one. Personally I would of asked DD to bring something she wanted to eat or asked.

The whole thing is odd indeed.

I have read. You read MY post! If OP rang her DD inadvance and told her she has changed her mind and IS now cooking a roast.... DD then should of been informed to bring something for lunch. OP changed the original plan. Chuffing cheek.

She’s 22, had the choice of three meals available for dinner, or alternatively is completely capable of making something else for herself, and yet she’s whining like a toddler to you because you cooked a roast. Do you ever look at her and feel like you’ve failed at parenting?

That was unnecessarily nasty.

Pinkchickenwine · 31/08/2026 20:00

Parcelpass · 31/08/2026 19:55

Yes she should. Why did OP agree in the first place? She's wrong for that.

You mean agree and make a separate meal for her DD, which she also didn’t fancy?

The DD had the temerity to think as she didn’t want the roast, no one should have it! Not happy with having a separate meal made for her!

Parcelpass · 31/08/2026 19:58

Pinkchickenwine · 31/08/2026 19:56

So the pasta bake that OP made separately for DD, was not enough?

Please read the OPs posts!

angelikacpickles · 31/08/2026 19:57

So what did she actually want you to do? If you had just made the pasta bake for everyone, would she have been happy with that?

Pinkchickenwine · 31/08/2026 19:56

Parcelpass · 31/08/2026 19:48

Given your DD asked you not to inadvance YABU. I think you should of called DD and told her you would be making a roast and to bring something along for dinner.

Well no, she shouldn’t have called her in advance.

Perhaps the DD can cater for herself in future.

But you can keep chicken in the freezer for months, it isn't going to degrade for an extra week or two

Talk about Roger Irrelevant. Her adult daughter prohibited her from cooking a roast and was sad face because she did and you are faffing with freezer politics. Fuck sake 🙄

OP could of called her DD inadvance. I think the whole thing is odd. OP is the one who failed to communicate. As she should of said no sorry I will be cooking a roast.

G5000 · 31/08/2026 19:51

OP made the DD a separate meal. She didn't have to eat the roast. She seem to be objecting to other people eating roast.

Pinkchickenwine · 31/08/2026 15:45

But she did cook something else for the daughter, a pasta bake that the DD then didn’t fancy…. Can you believe it?

Cloverroll · 31/08/2026 19:49

I think the OP is being disingenuous. I can't imagine anyone saying 'please don't cook a roast'. There must be more to it, but the OP is being selective with her reportage. Equally, if someone did ask me not to cook a certain meal, I probably wouldn't. I'd do the pasta bake and we could all/both have that. The OP's excuse that the chicken was going out of date holds no water.

Something doesn't quite add up here.

Parcelpass · 31/08/2026 19:48

BCBird · 31/08/2026 19:46

Clicked wrong one. If she doesn't like what's on offer then she can make her own. Don't feel bad.

VeneziaJ · 31/08/2026 19:42

I voted yabu because you said you felt bad! You actually bent over backwards for her to accommodate her faddy meal and STILL she complained🙄

Anarchy99 · 31/08/2026 19:40

Perhaps she’s getting too old for enforced family dinners and she can cook for herself in future

I think, as a grown adult, cohabiting with other supposedly grown adults…if following a conversation about dinner where one person had specifically said can we not have x and it had been agreed to have y…then I’d have been pretty pissy if X had appeared on the table with no warning.

Unless the pasta bake was the alternative meal you had both agreed on it’s a bit odd to deliberately make something someone has asked you not to for family dinner?

especially when the star ingredient for the meal that you’d both initially agreed not to have was safe in the freezer and could happily remain there for another few days?

Presumably it isn't just opand her daughter in the house tho?

CruCru · 31/08/2026 18:52

We are not told whether the 22 year old still lives at home or whether there are any siblings. Perhaps the daughter has reached an age where she doesn’t need to come to the Sunday night dinner every week.

BunnyLake · 31/08/2026 18:40

user1492809438 · 31/08/2026 15:58

It's not really about the roast. She asked you not to do something and you did it anyway. Could you not have explained the chicken needed using, or cooked it and used it in a pasta bake? An adult conversation should have been had.

She could always have said I don’t fancy a roast dinner today so how about I do the cooking and we all have pasta bake’ or whatever. Rather than a 22 year old dictating what the family should or shouldn’t eat without even lifting a finger to help.

CruCru · 31/08/2026 17:44

cssurvivor · 31/08/2026 13:29

what is wrong with communal eating on a sunday, as long as its not a 3 line whip and a roast is an easy meal to prepare for a group

There is a chance that it really is a 3 line whip though. I suspect that the OP won’t return now, either to clarify the chicken issue or to say whether they all have to be there every Sunday for dinner.

Ethelrogers · 31/08/2026 17:27

I had an infuriating conversation with my 13 year old about freezing things.

I bought some yellow sticker packs of breaded chicken in Tesco for the freezer, absolute bargain at closing time (the store was about to close so the lovely worker marked all six packs down to 10p each for me!)

I asked dd to put them in the fridge to defrost for the next night a few weeks later and she went nuts when she saw the use by date, said we would all get really sick if we ate them.

I had to google a thousand different sites to get to understand it was okay, they had been frozen.

Anyway, I’ve had a glass of wine I don’t know where I’m going with this. I really want a pasta bake now though.

BeGreySnail · 31/08/2026 17:22

I ate chicken that was 2 years out of date in my freezer. I'm still alive!

YANBU to make a roast though.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 31/08/2026 17:20

OP, I don’t think you know what you’ve started with this nonsense over the frozen chicken 😂

If you made her a pasta bake that she normally enjoys, why is she still pissy? Is it that she wanted you to all eat the same thing during your family meal? Did she feel like she was singled out because she was eating something different? Has she got some moral objection to any of the components of a roast dinner? Is she giving vegetarianism a go? Was it her turn to wash up? Is she pregnant and the smell of a roast makes her feel nauseous? I can’t think of any other reason why she would have the hump about a roast still being made when she wasn’t expected to eat it.

Why did she say there was nothing to eat, then have cottage pie if you’d made her a pasta bake?

Mousespoons · 31/08/2026 16:58

My teen dd can be a bit like this. She likes spicy/exciting things - ramen and Nando’s and stuff like that, gets a bit mardy about too many dinners with veg and gravy.

can she cook? It would probably be easy enough for her to whip up some spicy rice to have with the chicken, or a Caesar salad, or fajitas etc if she had the ingredients.

maybe she needs her own shelf in the cupboard/fridge and a cook book if she’s going to live at home but complain about family meals
