People who arrive here 'undocumented' are coming from failed states ie often no birth certificates, no passports eg
Somalia - civil war no central Government control
South Sudan - ongoing internal conflic
Yemen - severe humanitarian crises, prolonged conflict
Syria - years of civil war, destroyed public systems
Democratic Republic of the Congo - internal violence, lack of basic governmental delivery
Afghanistan - years of fighting, civil war, appalling civil rights
etc, etc.
People from such states are desperate. They often have family members who've been killed, are starving, have nowhere to live, fear for their children etc.
What would you do in such situations?
You would try to escape surely but you have elderly parents maybe, or young children. So you send on ahead members of the family who are most likely to survive the perils of a long uncertain journey, risks of starvation, long treks through hostile counties, to seek for help and establish a safe home.
They are leaving because they can't stay and /or are totally at odds with the political regimes they come from. Not because they are fully in support of them!
BTW the offending rates of asylum seekers are similar but a little below those of the rest of the UK.
Asylum seekers are people of resource, want to work. need to work. We should be allowing them to do so not keeping them in poverty for years on end. There are lots of jobs where there are shortages eg Government Skilled Workers shortage list. Other countries allow them to work.
Australia, Canada, Sweden, Portugal - right to work almost immediately.
Germany ditto after 3 months
Belgium ditto 4 months
USA, Netherlands ditto 6 months.
