I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

All the "if a man did this" comments and accusations that male posters are treated differently to women add nothing to the debate apart from demonstrating that the poster is a man and doesn't come on mumsnet much.

Shadowdax16 · 30/08/2026 19:41

I understand why you feel hurt and angry at their deception but I also think you’re reacting poorly and catastrophising which probably isn’t helping the situation. Having a conversation with your wife and/or friend would probably be better than being alone thinking the worst.

radiatordrama · 30/08/2026 19:41

You're seriously overreacting.

I'm sure that it was a shock and it's understandable to go through a range of feelings while you are processing this, but this all happened long in the past. (Separately, it's super dumb to dump someone over some sport-related thing and you're lucky your wife took you back.)

I hope for everyone's sake that you can get over this, without resentment. If you hold onto any resentment, your marriage will be doomed anyway.

Jennick · 30/08/2026 19:41

Whytell you ,you need to be careful how you react to something you can not change, you could ruin things ,not them

HelenaWilson · 30/08/2026 19:39

I'd also be getting DNA tests for the kids.

With or without their knowledge and consent?

She didn't tell you because she wanted you and thought if you found out, you wouldn't have got back together. As time went by, when was she supposed to tell you. In her mind it was just a thing in the past. Your wife obviously loves you. It is in the past. I'm going to say this with the most honest sincerity but it is going to be hard. Grow up and get over it. We all make mistakes and this happened a long time ago. It is no big deal. Imagine what you would have lost if you had found out. All those amazing years with a woman who can still make you feel jealous. You have no idea how lucky you are.

ThatCyanCat · 30/08/2026 19:23

I know MN has always really hated cheaters and cheating (good thing there is no cheating in this story) but I have noticed lately that there have been a few posters taking it to the absolute extreme... probably just Internet rhetoric but I've seen people fantasising about running people over if they cheat, or deliberately leaving someone to die in a burning building if they'd ever cheated on anyone, or one person who threatened an OW and said they would hunt her down in real life.

I wonder if our clearly changing demographic has anything to do with that, or indeed with posters who think it's impossible for anyone truly not to give that much of a shit about some stupid, non cheating teenage shagging back in Y2K.

ZeMarty · 30/08/2026 19:23

Lugol · 30/08/2026 19:15

100% It makes me laugh how disingenuous everyone is when it's a man posting.

But read the replies. Everyone is so chill round MN these days and would think nothing of their best friend and husband having a relationship years ago and saying nothing about it all this time.
And they especially wouldn't mind the fact that best friend being Maid of Honour or Godmother to their children! 🙄

100% mate. Fully agree. Imagine thinking something like this can be shrugged off, I'd love to see their reaction if their husbands walked in tonight and said ah yeah, you know our sons godmother, your best friend of 30 years, the woman I'm close to, yeah, the one we holiday with every year? Yeah I was shagging her for 3 months when we split, I KNOW she was comforting you the whole time, but hey, we did it to protect you 😂😂

'Yeah that's fine love, it was years ago wasn't it, totally fine, should we invite them out Friday?'

Fuck. Off. 😂😂😂

Lugol · 30/08/2026 19:17

They have concealed their relationship and continued to be close for 30 years so yes anyone would be concerned about the DC.

Once you start out having secrets, the lies keep piling up.

Edited

They haven't been concealing a sexual relationship unless they have actually been having one. A relationship before they were together does not count as nobody should be expected to tell their partner about relationships they had when single. The friend did have a duty to tell OP but the wife did not as she was single at the time.

21stNightOfSeptember · 30/08/2026 19:21

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 10:04

So you gonna keep secrets in your marriage? Which is relevant to everyday when your ex fling is present in your daily life?

Isn't it a lie and damaging?

Your relationships sound quite unhealthy.

Why is a friend part of your “daily life”? That just sounds smothering.

You and your wife are separate people. Of course it’s okay to have secrets.

SurferRona · 30/08/2026 19:19

jhkyg · 30/08/2026 11:13

We have no secret rule in our marriage, mutually

Course you do 🙄

Lugol · 30/08/2026 19:17

walrushurricane · 30/08/2026 19:14

Well how does anyone know their spouse isn't sleeping with their ex or the milkman. Should we all start doing DNA tests just in case? As you say, where does it stop.

Not being unreasonable whatsoever. Imagine all the women commenting - their husband had sex with their best friend all those years ago, had a great relationship with the best friend and didn't say anything.

I'd be royally peed off. At both. Anyone defending the wife too is ridiculous. She should have brought it up, and sleeping with your best mate after you is scummy in my opinion regardless. Your best mate is a snake. It'll have you second guessing how close they are now.

Both to blame 100%. Anyone saying it wasn't cheating etc yes, you're right, but this betrayal in my opinion is far worse. It happened for months, as he was comforting you. It wasn't a one off drunken mistake, this happened for months. You were teens, but not stupid. To do that to a best mate is unforgivable at any age.

The women on here will always defend the women, but if this was a woman posting, the husband would burn at the stake.

You're 100% correct to be fuming, and truthfully, I wouldn't know how to come back from it.

Genuinely mate, I hope you recover from this and live a happy life, but do not listen to any post on here telling you you're being stupid.

If this happened to any single one of those posters, they'd feel exactly the same. Always easy to give people advice when not emotionally involved or have experience of it.

You're not being unreasonable at all, 100%. They hid it to protect them, not you.

Good luck mate 👍

OPs wife and his best friend have been extremely close friends all this time.

I hate liars but I suppose if you start out lying where does it stop?

I’ve skipped thru the entire post, life’s too short, but I have read all your responses.

Frankly I think you’re never going to be convinced to put this totally behind you and remain married. The trust has gone. You’re probably making everyone under your roof miserable.

You don’t seem capable of seeing the majority view given here so maybe I’m going to be the first to say with a touch of cynicism…

Divorce her. Put an end to it for goodness sake OR Put up & shut up.

CrystalMighty · 30/08/2026 19:12

I'm only half way through the thread so maybe it's been mentioned, but I'm now thinking maybe the BF's wife sensed he has feelings for OP's wife and grilled him, leading him to tell her about their past... and now he has to come clean before it gets out...?

I know. I am starting to wonder if there's a forum elsewhere where the menz get a signal to turn up and give all the silly women on mumsnet the benefit of their wisdom.

There is something going on. This is really, really sustained and has been happening for ages.

It's not against the rules of course, so there isn't really anything we can do about it. But it's definitely not in good faith and I do think it may change the nature of the site overall. Perhaps that's the objective.

It also really grinds my gears all the people constantly complaining about MN reflecting its demographic (such as it is these days, as if a) a mostly female space has a moral duty to be the Old Bailey and perfectly objective in everything b) the extensive manosphere is such a space that we could all learn from.

1985goingbackagain · 30/08/2026 19:07

Were you celibate during the 6 months that you broke up (at your instigation)?

Actions have consequences- but now you are holding her responsible for what you caused through your actions. Presumably she didn’t know you’d end up back together!

I don’t understand why he suddenly decided to tell you though. This is an example of a time when keeping quiet would have been far better.

MintSnail · 30/08/2026 19:05

Awful for you. In terms of moving forward when you have processed this. They didn't cheat, and they were kids. Their decision not to tell you was wrong and they both feel differently now. You need time to process this and rebase your friendship.

Lugol · 30/08/2026 19:04

It may be a shock but you two weren’t together, who she slept with (and ego your best friend slept with) wasn’t any of your business.

I think your so called friend is a complete tossed god telling you

Starlight7080 · 30/08/2026 19:01

Well atleast you haven't overreacted and backed up your wife's reason for never telling you.
She didnt cheat and she was 18. You shouldnt try to punish her for something that happened when she was very young. And single .
If my dh acted as you are and tried to make me feel guilty or that I should be punished. Then I would never forgive him.
But you must be perfect and never make a mistake .
