people have lives, I get that. But after several pages not to have come back is just rude.

I agree.

Especially, when it’s a long post asking for help or opinions. Why bother if you’re not going to reply?

Imagine, asking a question in real life and then just walking away. It would appear rude.

I posted (under a different name) in Relationships once when I was feeling very upset about something and needed advice.
I was completely taken aback by the harsh replies I got and demands for more information, so I hid the thread and never went back.
Sometimes if you put yourself in the OPs position, it’s easy to see why they don’t come back.
The ones that engage a lot are often looking for an argument or they are not genuine posters.

NeckMuscle · 10/09/2026 07:25

If it’s a longish thread, I check to see if the OP has contributed several posts. If they haven’t, I don’t bother reading it.

hardshoulderr · 10/09/2026 07:24

Mumsnet do not make up threads.

Most of them are utter wind em up and watch em go bollocks.
Either that or started by MNHQ to generate traffic to the site
Nothing will ever be done about them as they almost always generate a big response and as we know on here these days it's all about the clicks

CalmFairy · 30/08/2026 10:47

It doesn't bother me at all if they come back or not.
But what i dont like it the really long post they write its like reading a chapter of a book, when they could get to the bloody point in a few words.
Most of the time I go to the comments to get the story, sometimes I go to the comments as I just dont get what is being asked.

And the title of some threads make no bloody sense.

Denim4ever · 30/08/2026 10:41

I seem to be in a minority. It doesn't really bother me. I can understand it's the norm to check back and respond but if they haven't I wouldn't be bothered. I have always responded on threads I've created. Unless someone has asked a question/for clarification then it's usually just 'thanks for replies'.

Messedupmyusernameagain · 30/08/2026 10:21

Yes I've starting doing 'see all' and if there's one post, moving on.

Me too. Especially if there are 20 plus pages!

DeHumanaeMentisApatheia · 30/08/2026 10:33

And yes, if I suspect the OP isn’t coming back I move on without wasting my time and effort.

One post wonders should be assumed to be trolls and banned from posting again.

Not wishing to derail the thread...but...could this ban extend to people who haven't bothered to read the OPs updates and just barge in with their totally made up/irrelevant interpretation of something that hasn't even happened.

Edited to add a missing space.

GCAcademic · 30/08/2026 10:25

Elviva · 30/08/2026 10:22

People do have lives offline with work, families and other responsibilities. And may be reflecting on what has been said.

LydiaJayne · 30/08/2026 10:22

hardshoulderr · 30/08/2026 08:28

Maybe there should be a red flag posted at the top of the thread after a day 😁

You don't need a flag you can see from the OP if they've posted more than once

OK, you have to open the thread to see that but you do t have to waste any time reading the OP

Messedupmyusernameagain · 30/08/2026 10:21

hardshoulderr · 30/08/2026 10:20

I can confidently tell you that very few journalists to come to Mumsnet for a balanced opinion any more
Sadly it's a bit of a laughing stock

When it’s a troll posting something outrageous to get people frothing I can sort of see the logic.

When it happens on Style & Beauty I have to exercise all my powers of mature restraint and rising above not to explode with fury. It’s so bloody rude!

Why make people waste time considering all your perceived limitations and seeking out best options and linking with careful advice - if you know you don’t actually give a toss?

Sometimes I assume they’re just scraping for content for their own TikTok / Insta / whatever platforms. The words ‘rot’ and ‘hell’ come to mind.

The rest? I have no idea what motivates them. 🤷‍♀️

Cotopaxi · 30/08/2026 10:10

It depends how long it is since they first posted. Anything under an hour or two and you can give them the benefit of the doubt. Some threads take on a life of their own with other posters arguing amongst themselves😂

When it's a potentially contentious or 'OMG you're never going to believe this!' topic, I do give them a bit of a side eye though.

Ops have lives too. Maybe they are busy (kids, work, other commitments) and haven't had a chance to return to Mumsnet in a few days. And sometimes within a few days there can be 400+ replies. No one has time read and respond to all of that.

Yup, I like this idea

MCR24 · 30/08/2026 09:58

I suggested a second number next to the thread title for the number of posts by the OP. If there's 500 and 0 you could see straight away they haven't been back.

I was a “one post wanker” once (love the term!).
I posted looking for advice on a specific situation with my elderly mother. Then got loads of replies all along the theme of “your mother should care for herself/pay for her own care”. Given that I’d been clear in my opening post that I love my mother and was choosing to help her through her old age, it was just not helpful and I didn’t bother to reply. People are so quick these days to post a snap comments with their opinion, before taking the time to consider what might help the person who created the thread.
I have had other threads though where I’ve taken the time to post thank yous even if nothing more to add.

I understand.

People replying with criticism without reading the OP are plain rude. Especially when it’s a sensitive subject.

I also don’t understand why some of these threads attract hundreds of replies, many simply repeating what other people have same.

Maybe if we could see the reactions we would simply react to posts we agree with.

hardshoulderr · 30/08/2026 09:38

Love one post wankers

I tend to read all the OP’s posts in the thread to see if there’s an update or clarification, especially if it’s a long thread (though tend to avoid those as really what can I add). If there isn’t then less likely to bother reading it all.
