Physio at home

Hi sorry for posting on AIBU, I will remove once I get a few answers if thats ok. I'm agoraphobic and I'm struggling with pain due to arthritis in most of my body, this started when I was around 13 years old and I'm now 50. I'm waiting for a double knee replacement and I'm supposed to be having an op on my good foot. I'm in the house all of the time as I mentioned and I'm just a fat mess, I am at the point now where I struggle to get up and down the stairs and I can't carry on like this. My GP has said I'm welcome to come to the surgery for physio, I rarely get to speak to the same GP and they don't know my history when they ring. Does anyone know if a physio would come to my home if I paid? I'm not sure if they do that kind of thing but it would have to be a woman and how would I know they are 100% genuinely a trained physio, people can say they are anything these days. I'll remove my post once I have a few answers, I hope thats ok.

Look on the CSP (chartered society of physiotherapy) website for local registered physios near you.

Actually OP, it’s the Health Care Professionals website you need to look for physios that are registered for healthcare.
The CSP is more like a union for physios and provides insurance ( which physios have to pay monthly membership ) but there’s nothing stopping physios from getting their own insurance and not joining the CSP.

A physiotherapist will need to be HCPC registered so you should ask for a copy of their registration number. I would also ask for a copy of their DBS for one coming to your home.

The NHS will send a physio to you at home. Say you're housebound because you are. I know this because I have a physio that comes to me at home, and a chiropractor and a chronic pain coach (I pay for the chiropractor). Also ask to be referred to occupational health.

Are you registered as housebound with your GP?

If you are, NHS community physio should visit you at home. Obviously, no charge then.

Ask your GP,it's possible the might do a video call instead.

I pay £50 for an hour home visit from a physio so do some research first before being put off by some of the prices quoted here

I lost 4.5 stone and it made bog all difference to my condition,in fact I had more aches and pains. So while it can help ,it doesn't always so I would definitely try and see a physio.

@CatsangDogs you can turn off notifications in the settings and you can unwatch the thread but I'm not sure you can turn off comments specifically.

There are private physios who make house calls but unless you follow an exercise regime between appointments the effect is likely to be more limited. Weight issues may also increase risks of operations and hinder recovery. How do you get to appointments and hospital?

@BlueMum16 do you mind me asking if its exspensive. I'm on benefits and I would struggle but I'd do it if it meant i'd get some relief.

Where I am (north west) an initial home visit is £80 compared to £62 in clinic.

Dh injured his back and couldn't even walk to the car without a walking stick so we had an in home physio come to the house. That was 18 months ago and we still have them back. Amazing woman who does wonders with Dh's back and shoulders, I then have a full body massage in the comfort of my own lounge. They will tailor the treatment/therapy to you.

Mine costs £65 for 60 minutes. As an idea of where they cover, it is from Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds down through Nottingham to the Birmingham area if you want their details.

On their website you can drop down the box and see their names so we knew it was a woman before she came. They have their own clinics but travel too.

£95 for 60min, £85 for 45min follow-up for at home physio from my local clinic.

Where I live its £120 for initial assessment & then £75 for each follow up. More for a specialist or more experienced physio.

If your issue is straightforward OA in knees you will prob get advice & tips & exercises so you might not need more than the assessment.

Look at Physio First (www.physiofirst.org.uk), their physios have to be registered and you can search by area (of country) and by specialism. You want a physio to be Chartered as this means they must have done the full 3-year qualification, either as a degree or (if they are old like I am) in a hospital. They also have to do ongoing CPD to stay up to date.

Home visits are absolutely a thing and being overweight, while a factor, should not prevent you receiving appropriate treatment.

Hi @LaurieFairyCake I am overweight by about 4 stone which I know is significant and has made things worse but in all fairness when I was stick thin I still suffered.
