Is anyone Serbian or knows Serbia-
I can't get hold of my son and he doesn't have his phone on him, his friend has it.

This is very unlike him and I am worried sick

Oh op. When I was 19 on 2002 I went backpacking in India for 3 months. I called my mum once, on her birthday. I sent 2 postcards. Agree that phones and Internet have created a terrible anxiety cycle of constant checking. I hope he enjoys trvelling

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 29/08/2026 17:16

So glad he turned up and all was well. I sympathise, have DC who have gone off on adventures and you can't help worrying at times.
But he's lucky to have a switched on Mum, ready to help. Good to see you had some great MN advice.

InterIgnis · 29/08/2026 14:43

Good chance he was out on a splav, and going from one to another. It’s easy to get separated, but there are far worse cities than Belgrade to become separated in. It’s a very safe city - I’ve been quite comfortable as a woman walking through Kalamegdan at 2am. The Balkans has a bad reputation, but with the possible exception of Athens the violent crime rates in major cities are very low when compared to America or Western Europe. There really aren’t ‘bad’ areas in the same way.

There’s no need to rely on WiFi. He can use a virtual sim, or just pick up a cheap Serbian one from a shop or one of the street kiosks.

Also, the majority of people in Belgrade will know English.

Tell him to download the Beograd Plus app, because it will give him all the information on public transport he may need (as another poster said, public transport is free). Also, the Car Go and Yandex Go apps are basically Serbian versions of Uber. Obviously he would need to keep his phone on him, and functional, for these.

Tell him not to get tourist-trapped in Skadarlija. It’s fun to visit and an experience, but the restaurants aren’t great and more expensive than they should be for the quality.

The best food in Serbia is in Niš, it’s about 3 hours away by bus, going south. I’d recommend doing a day or two there. It’s very different to Beograd, much more Ottoman. Conversely, north of Beograd is Novi Sad, which is all Austria-Hungary/Hapsburg.

Thanks to those that have suggested things even though he has been found, if he hadn't all that information would have been so helpful.

I've had a chat now, and a strong cup of sugary tea!

He doesn't know why his friend had his phone- but they have talked about how they need a backup plan as access to phones can not be relied on. Apparently they just got split up, but I don't know- I have told him about looking after himself, but youth is invincible.

He was able to get back to the hostel due to the kindness of strangers who helped him find a bus, I am so thankful for them. He says Serbia is an amazing place, loves it.

Honestly MN is amazing - I've had PMs from people offering to help, thank you.

Just to add by way of after the event/ongoing reassurance - public transport in Belgrade is completely FREE. So as long as there’s a helpful stranger or not unhelpful bus driver, you’ll not be stranded 😊

Did he get back last night or this morning? Good plan to have a back up plan

LiteraryBambi · 29/08/2026 11:39

Glad he is safe. I don't think you over reacted, it is a very natural reaction for a mother. My son is a similar age and I'd be as distressed as you. Sweet tea is a good remedy!

Vallies · 29/08/2026 11:31

I've often felt like a terrible mother (and wife) compared to friends because I rarely contact people when they are away, leaving them to call when convenient, and living in blissful ignorance meantime. Probably a throwback from how it used to be when the person away had to find a callbox.

I do think to was better for everyone's health!

WearyAuldWumman · 29/08/2026 11:23

Glad your son is fine, @OP .

Tell him to bring you a bottle of Viljamovka!

Anextrasetofhands11 · 29/08/2026 10:55

It's not ridiculous. It's a worried parent ticking off a list of places that in her head, her son could be.... Belittling someone by calling them ridiculous isn't going to make them feel OK about making a hand hold post.
I have my own personal experience of a similar situation. Words really matter at a time like this.

Agreed. I have relatives in the Balkans and I'd be bricking myself if a teenage son of mine went missing there.

WearyAuldWumman · 29/08/2026 11:20

Where about in Serbia is he?

ETA Have just seen the update. Glad all is well.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 29/08/2026 11:11

So glad all is okay, I think he deserves a mild bollocking upon return and he should deffo treat you to a nice lunch when he gets back 😂.

When I was 17 I went to maga (idk why my parents allowed it) and one of my mates accidentally called my dad at 2AM. Woke up the next day with hundreds of missed calls and called him back… he was about to get in the car and drive to the airport to look for me. He then led me on for the rest of the day saying he’d brought a flight now and he was just gonna join us on our girls holiday.

MrsVBS · 29/08/2026 11:08

Glad your son is ok, thanks for the update ❤️

Anextrasetofhands11 · 29/08/2026 10:57

So pleased everything is OK, OP.
I really felt for you.

Ypu need to calm down .
Panicing and ringing random hospitals 8n Serbia is ridiculous.

First -make a list of questions you need answering like
a) where exactly are they
b) where exactly was son last time he was seen/What time was it
c) is he drunk
d) is he on any (illegal) drugs
e) what was he doing
f) what was he wearing
g)where are they staying?
h) was son alone or with others -or any locals
i) how much money did son have with him
j) does son have key to where they are staying?

Questions like this.
Ifvyou end up phoning the Embassy you will need to have information for them.
So, get a cup of tea, a pen & paper &write as many questions as you can.

Then -text your son’s friend. Can he receive text messages?
If he can -write him the most important questions and try to get some answers.

Why is your son’s friend in a panic? Just because he has his phone??

Im sure he will be fine .

So relieved he is ok - had no additional helpful ideas so didn’t post earlier! I would have been worried too.

AdjectiveColourNoun · 29/08/2026 08:34

A perfect case study of how mobile phones and the expectation of constant contact have turned us into a world of neurotic worriers. Not said in judgement OP, I am one of them!

The adventures I got up to in my 20s when there were still no smart phones…

Agree. The friend was only worried as my son didn't have his phone, not that he was missing if that makes sense. He said he wouldn't have called if my son had his phone.

I'm glad he's OK. I'd be the same as you.

HollyhocksandPeons · 29/08/2026 10:29

Thank God, it is so good to read about outcomes like that!

stopbeingnasty · 29/08/2026 10:27

So glad to hear he's back

croisette · 29/08/2026 10:23

Agree, Belgrade is very normal and safe. I traveled alone and had no issues although this was pre demonstrations. Just be respectful expressing political opinions (I’m sure he is)

croisette · 29/08/2026 10:20

So glad he’s turned up OP. If he’s near a city it is very easy to go to a Serbian telecoms shop and get a SIM card so he can at least WhatsApp and stay in touch. It isn’t expensive at all and might give you all some peace of mind!

Goatsarebest · 29/08/2026 10:17

Great update,
As parent with children who all did and still do this kind of traveling and have had these calls, it is anxiety on another level until resolved. You need to have a quiet calm day today to get back on an even keel. We want our children to experience the world but with that can come this sort of thing. You can have a discussion with them about communication etc in a few days. Definitely not reasonable to phone after a few hours separated on a Friday night, unless they know there is an issue.
And for anyone wondering about Belgrade and Serbia. We've been there a number of times and it is probably one of the safest capital cities for visitors in Europe if you stay in the well known areas and aren't looking for anything illegal. Serbians tend to like their visitors and haven't got to the cynical over saturated stage of ripping off their visitors.

ThisWiseRobin · 29/08/2026 10:04

Oh lovely, I'm so glad he's back. Possibly feeling a right idiot.
Kids never stop causing you panic.
I was going to add, before your posting, that my 19 year old daughter "went dark" fir 3 days in the Australian outback.
Ends up battery signal etc etc and meeting a brouo of long distance biker tourists meant that mummy was far from her thoughts.
I tore her a new one when she contacted me.
Ps. She's a doctor now and 41, and I still worry about her.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 29/08/2026 10:02

Sorry - just seen your update (hadn’t refreshed the page). Very pleased for you!
