To ask what happens now my flight has been cancelled?

I was due on a flight that was cancelled tonight and the communication from the airline has been woeful.

Everyone at the airport just shrugged and said it wasn’t their problem, to go through the app and sort it out there.

I did that and I have a new flight tomorrow, and I’m in a hotel. I know things like dinner tonight and food tomorrow can be claimed back, but what about things like the Airbnb I’ve paid for for tonight in my original destination? I’ve messaged the hosts and explained that I won’t be there tonight, so I’m hopeful they’re going to keep the reservation for me, but if they don’t, then what?

How do I claim the compensation due under UK 261? What do I do now?

Kindly OP you need to chill. You aren’t out of pocket - it’s annoying and frustrating but it’s part of flying. You should get around £400 compensation for the flight cancellation iirc as it’s their fault - surely that’s way more than you paid for your flight? We had a cancellation with easyJet for similar reason and got 1600 back ( 4 people ) - more than the holiday cost, so we were delighted. Your holiday hasn’t been ruined, just delayed by a day. Not the end of the world.

Yes but I’d really like to avoid claiming on that as I’d have to pay an excess! The entire issue was basically the easyJet crew was one down. They tried to get in contact with the standby staff member but they weren’t available. Surely that’s something they have to pay out for

You keep saying ‘surely’ this and ‘surely’ that. No. This is EasyJet to boot, they don’t care. They will
Pay what regulations deem they have to legally and I don’t think your airbnb is covered, I could be wrong.. but ‘surely’ doesn’t come into it.

This is awful. They really shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this

But OP, if the airline have paid your expenses/ hotel for this evening, why should they pay “twice” by also paying for the Airbnb that you aren’t using this evening?

on here there’s a calculator to determine how much compensation you should receive on top of expenses, it’s based on flight length and delay. Last time I had to claim the money arrived in 2 weeks and that was easyJet

Thunder storms aren’t an excuse when both the original airport and destination airport were operating at full capacity. This was because their standby staff member didn’t come in.

This is all getting a bit abstract but without knowing crew itinaries and aircraft rotations for the whole day you can't say whether thunderstorms in Europe would have had an effect or not on crewing.

Don’t let this ruin your holiday. Yes it is frustrating but it is 1 day delay. You will be there today.

I know it is frustrating but you didn’t book a holiday through easyjet you booked a flight and they are making that right by paying your over night accommodation and food.

Exactly. Stop moaning and get on with it. You chose to book a non-package flight with a budget airline. Deal with it.

KiwiCat01 · 29/08/2026 08:16

I am currently dealing with this. Flew Dublin to Washington recently and then was meant to fly from Washington Cancun. The flight to Washington was 2.5 hours delayed so we had no connecting flight and spent two days in Washington. Under EU law due to length of distance and time of delay I think I am due 600e per person which is the most that can be paid. The airline have offered 50 each which I have rejected: I am waiting to see their response. There is EU law 261. Can be either 250, 400 or 600 compensation depending on the distance you were meant to fly. They won’t pay towards accommodation missed but you hopefully can claim one of those figures.

Air crews don't shuttle back and forth between the same two airports all day, this is not how this works.
You don't fly much, do you?

Satisfiedwithanapple · 29/08/2026 07:27

You haven’t booked a holiday, you’ve booked a flight.

If you book a hotel as well through easyJet then no they can’t because it’s a package so they have more responsibility. Personally I always book a package for this reason if I possibly can for where I want to go. Air b&bd can be cheaper, but this situation is the risk that you take, unfortunately.

If you’ve paid for the air b&b at least they won’t re let it - that’s what I’d be more worried about having nowhere to stay when I arrived.

Yes I’m concerned about this too. I’ve reached out to the Airbnb owner but because it was so late in their timezone when I did, I’ve not heard anything back yet

I assume your flights are within Europe? Europe was absolutely hammered with thunder storms yesterday. I kept an eye on them on lightningmaps.org because my sister said that they had storm warnings and true enough there were several massive storm fronts making their ways across Europe the entire day. There's a good chance that the reason Easijet didn't have enough crew at your airport was because they were delayed coming in from airports that were affected by severe weather there. I had flights back to Scotland cancelled two years ago when Schiphol was closed all day because of severe weather, KLM offered me return flights (via their app) three days later but I booked my own return the same day via Frankfurt. I wasn't entitled to claim for the new flights and KLM wouldn't have paid for three nights in a hotel if I would have gone for their new flight option because weather doesn't count for that. This is just a risk you take when you fly somewhere.

I don’t think that’s true.

It is. The airline is responsible for all expenses incurred in waiting for the next flight. However, the 'missed holiday' part wouldn't be covered by travel insurance.

Hubbaleh · 29/08/2026 08:00

If the airline can be held liable for the reason for the cancellation, you'll receive compensation. The purpose of that compensation is to cover things like missed nights at Airbnb. It's a lot more straightforward for airlines to just give compensation instead of spending time calculating how much each individual passenger should get back, so the decision was that everyone who is entitled to it receives the same amount regardless of what they're missing out on.

They didn’t even stick us on a bus to the hotel, nor did they sort anything for everyone who opted for another airport (which I’m now wishing I did to be honest, seeing all those flights in the air and mine will probably get cancelled again). The staff literally just shrugged their shoulders and said it’s not their problem, we have to sort everything and claim it back. There were people with babies who were stranded and easyJet literally didn’t care. It was disgustong

Unfortunately when you pick a budget airline you get a budget experience.

Sammyspurs · 29/08/2026 07:59

What was the reason your flight was cancelled? Screenshot all proof- and write them an email. There’s lots of good templates online. Hopefully you’re not with Norse- I had to go down the small claim route with them. Luckily I got money back- but others didn’t. Good luck

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/08/2026 07:47

If people book with Easy Jet - it’s worth remembering it’s NO frills and budget! They are not obliged to cover the cost of an Airbnb you did NOT book with them. You have not booked a package holiday. You have just booked a flight, and it’s about time people understood the legal differences!

NetZeroZealot · 29/08/2026 07:40

EasyJet are a budget airline. You booked because they are cheap.
You are not out of pocket due to the cancellation because they are paying for your accommodation, meals & transport.
The fact that one night of your Airbnb cost is ‘wasted’ is irrelevant.
you get what you pay for.

Igneococcus · 29/08/2026 07:32

tpwk · 29/08/2026 06:50

Maybe it would force them into making sure their standby staff are actually on standby? I don’t understand why people think we should just accept mediocrity and nod our heads. EasyJet reported a 9% increase in profit to £665 million, yet people think they’re the victims in this scenario! Not the person who works a minimum wage job, saved for years and spent a huge amount on a holiday!

No, the airline are supposed to pay. Not travel insurance- they’re meant to be responsible for all costs related to the flight cancellation

I don’t think that’s true, though I could be wrong. My understanding is, the airline will cover costs related to the cancelled/delayed flight. So, accommodation, food, and related costs in the place where you were supposed to fly from. Travel insurance is for everything else. If you want your Airbnb covered, then I hope you have insurance.

OneSnugBear · 29/08/2026 07:30

BA cancelled my flight. They would not pay for the Airbnb that I had booked and couldn't get to.

Well then you keep a receipt for whatever transport you paid to get to the hotel, and claim it back from EasyJet

Satisfiedwithanapple · 29/08/2026 07:27

It’s baffling to me that airlines can essentially ruin your holiday and just shrug their shoulders and say “not our problem”!

You can claim for compensation for the flight seeing as it was Easyjet's fault the flight didn't go ahead. They also need to find & pay accommodation for last night plus meal allowance for dinner & breakfast - but they will decide what's appropriate. We got bussed to a LHR hotel, food voucher for dinner & a brown bag breakfast to take with us (LOL at the "breakfast"!)
Easyjet are also responsible for re-booking you and getting you to your destination.
Sadly, as was the case for us, the first night's accommodation at your destination has gone up in smoke.

They didn’t even stick us on a bus to the hotel, nor did they sort anything for everyone who opted for another airport (which I’m now wishing I did to be honest, seeing all those flights in the air and mine will probably get cancelled again). I had a flight cancelled with BA. We kept all receipts and when we did finally get home we uploaded all receipts and information on the website and received refund within a week or two. Very straightforward.

WoollyPigeon · 29/08/2026 07:12

I've also had to claim via the easyJet online form. It was a few years ago now but was very simple to do.
