To ask what happens now my flight has been cancelled?

I was due on a flight that was cancelled tonight and the communication from the airline has been woeful.

Everyone at the airport just shrugged and said it wasn’t their problem, to go through the app and sort it out there.

I did that and I have a new flight tomorrow, and I’m in a hotel. I know things like dinner tonight and food tomorrow can be claimed back, but what about things like the Airbnb I’ve paid for for tonight in my original destination? I’ve messaged the hosts and explained that I won’t be there tonight, so I’m hopeful they’re going to keep the reservation for me, but if they don’t, then what?

How do I claim the compensation due under UK 261? What do I do now?

This is a rumour at best.

You can check whether other flights from your airport were cancelled, as a starter for 10. That would indicate it wasn’t related to one crew member on one airline.

Go to the Martin Lewis website - there's full info there.

My recollection is that they can only refuse compensation if the cancellation was caused by bad weather. Being short of air crew is the airline's fault.

But the OP has since been told that the delay was actually caused by Air Traffic Control issues. Which is outside the airline's control. It's not just weather they don't necessarily have to compensate for, it's anything they can't control or be reasonably able to predict.

They said at the gate (overheard, not delivered to passengers) that the issue was the standby crew weren’t coming in.

That is fully down to easyJet.

Crew are rostered on standbys for a set number of hours, once that standby starts their available hours start ticking down. It’s entirely possible that given the multiple delays yesterday by the time they will have used the crew on airport standby and then started calling the ones on home standby and by the time they get called they might not have enough hours available to operate the flight, bearing in mind they have to operate the return flight as well.

My DD is crew for easyJet, she left here at 1.30pm yesterday and was at the airport nearly 5 hours before her flight could take off. The aircraft was delayed getting into Bristol so her flight couldn’t board and missed their take off slot. She didn’t get home til 4.15am and isn’t up yet so I don’t know what impact it’s had on her roster for today. Crewing aircraft is really complex!

Problem here is we have what was supposedly heard at the gate (?) verses the reality of what operations behind the scene will have been dealing with.

The two may not necessarily align.

ATC? I don’t know how to or where I’d even start

Presumably fairly easy to check.

Then take your claim to aviation ADR and they'll look into it further.

I’m going to have to, what a pain in the arse

I had a terrible experience with Air India last year. Multiple delays, cancelled flights, ended up in Bangladesh at one stage. Also got on a plane only to be told an hour later that we all needed to get off as there was a fault! We were awake pratting about for a full 36 hours.
Anyway, a couple of months later I got fully refunded plus £500. I had to chase it up repeatedly and, they claimed to have sent it at one point but actually hadn't! Got there in the end though.
I'll never travel with them again. We got sick too as the man in front of us was throwing up and had the flu yet they only asked him to wear a mask an hour before the plane landed. Absolute nightmare. And no, nobody at the airport gave a stuff!

It is though, depending on which part of the world you're in. Certainly in Europe.

The poster was suggesting the Airbnb cost would be covered.

it isn’t.

EasyJet have denied my claim stating it was ATC restrictions so no compensation. Absolutely unbelievable

Earlier this summer our train from Paris to Toulouse was cancelled due to heatwave speed restrictions. As we were self organised SNCF offered us what they had to - a chance to rebook a similar journey or get our money back. Luckily I managed to find an alternative train the same day but it meant our plans to arrive in Toulouse early afternoon were screwed and we didn't arrive until 8pm and much of the first day of our holiday was mainly spent in a very hot Gare du Nord frantically scanning the SNCF app for train tickets.

Not ideal but this is the chance you take when you self organise.

jackstini · 29/08/2026 12:18

You haven’t been treated like crap though - you have a new flight, a hotel paid for overnight and will get compensation for the delay

That is normal for any airline and everyone would have been in the same situation. Sometimes human error happens, or people are sick, or cars break down. They didn’t have crew to
fly, so can’t just magic some up - but have got you on the next possible flight (& gave you the option to fly into another airport same day - which I get you now wish you had chosen, so more disgruntled)

Has your Airbnb replied?
Are you travelling alone?

MorrisonsPlatter · 29/08/2026 12:16

My EasyJet flight to Lisbon was cancelled yesterday at an hour's notice. It was the last flight of the season.
Fortunately I had no accommodation booked.
I've booked a Flixbus for Wednesday which will involve two wait/transfers and take 50 hours. That's life I guess.

Honestly you are on a hiding to nothing here. There is lots of surely, I overheard etc…

You have a hotel, you have been booked on the next flight and I honestly don’t think anyone said from EasyJet ‘it’s not my problem’.

No easyjet staff generally just hide if there are issues

Timeforachange26 · 29/08/2026 12:09

tpwk · 28/08/2026 22:07

Surely it is though as it’s their fault I’ve not made it tonight?

Unfortunately that just tough. I had to pay an extra days car parking when homeward bound flight delayed overnight and couldn't claim that back

You can however claim hotel and food expenses and depending on reason for calke ration EU/ UK 261 compensation

PropertyD · 29/08/2026 12:09

How much was your AibnB?

They're referring to the EasyJet bit being cheap.

You chose a budget airline and are now pissed off that you've had a budget experience.

PropertyD · 29/08/2026 11:53

OP - you are sounding a bit silly now. EasyJet is cheap. That is why you chose them. Goodness knows what your AirBNB cost but when you do things seperately YOU have to sort it out.

Buy a package next time!

APC303 · 29/08/2026 11:47

Someone I know got stuck in Germany last night because their plane couldn't leave wherever had lightning so wasn't even at their airport. I 'think' that is covered but those delayed at the original airport wouldn't be.
