To ask people to think before they post

After a very upsetting night and morning I am home again, having a cup of tea and scrolling facebook. On my local area page someone has posted a video of police activity taking place in the field across from their house. Yes it looks exciting it’s 11.30om and dark, there are 3 police cars, there’s shouting and a taser is heard, lots of crying and a clear shout of “the knife is dropped, he’s down” then silence then ‘where’s the ambulance “

at this point she does have the sense to stop recording, but she’s posted it, I asked for it to be removed and she posted it again 3 times !

the reason I’m upset, the reason I’m sicken that’s it’s there, and I have seen something I really didn’t want to.

that knife welding thug, was my 16year old godson, the person he wanted to hurt was himself, he called the police and told them he had cut himself, they responded. They tapered because he wouldn’t let go of the knife he didn’t want to die alone. Of course the shock made him drop it. But the damage was done.

my darling, so sweet, so loving but so troubled godson didn’t make it,

that recording of his cry will for ever haunt me.

what does she gain from posting it, ok maybe she doesn’t know the why the wherefore, she’s just relishing in the drama.

please people, please think before you post things like this,

Please don’t apologise my love you have nothing to be sorry for.. Let us hold you. I’m so sorry this has happened to you and people you love. Please do and say whatever brings you comfort. Thinking of you all.

Frequency · 28/08/2026 21:24

I'm sorry for your loss OP, and for what you had to see on FB.

I'd message the woman directly. Not to ask her to take it down, but to explain herself. Why did she feel the need to post it, and how did she think it would affect people like yourself and his family?

weebleswobblebuttheydontfallover · 28/08/2026 21:24

Honestly dear OP I am upset thinking of your upset, and of your godson and his family.

As far as I personally am concerned (obviously I can’t speak for anyone else), anything that brings you the slightest comfort right now is a good thing.

Life can be very cruel and I’m so sorry you (all) are going through this.

Grumpynan · 28/08/2026 21:20

I’m sorry if I’ve upset people, I wanted to explain how much could be heard, I suppose if you don’t know the facts it sounds like the police brought down a knife welding thug ? Which is good ?.

the facts are different, and until you know all the facts you should think before making these things public.

hes parents encouraged me to post this, to make people aware that what you think you see isn’t the full story and to stop and think.

thank you for all the good wishes, I have passed them on to the family, they are with me now.

I think tbh we are all still in shock, maybe tomorrow we will think and feel different, it’s been a long day

If these are the actual facts I don't think you should have shared all this on MN either.

Perhaps, then, a more sympathetic response might be: I’m so sorry for your loss OP. Perhaps you might want to ask MN to remove a few details that might be identifying?

Incredibly unsympathetic response to someone who’s clearly very shocked.

londodaylite · 28/08/2026 21:15

Such gormless, gossipy thickos have always existed.
But they didn't have the internet to broadcast their thoughtless garbage to a wide audience.

Very sorry for your loss op.

Mogloveseggs · 28/08/2026 21:11

That is dreadful. I am so sorry for your loss 💐

MyThreeWords · 28/08/2026 21:09

Yes. Not something for Facebook. Or for Mumsnet.

Are you suggesting that the OP shouldn’t be posting about it here? Or was it just poorly worded?

I think OP is entitled to reach out here if she wishes.

How strange that you think she may be incapable of doing both of those things?

I assume she doesn’t want to upset them even further by mentioning it. Online communities have their uses.

Sezza57325 · 28/08/2026 21:07

I’m so sorry. It must’ve been awful to see that video. I think I would message the woman directly. She clearly thinks she is doing some sort of public service but is nosey and clueless.

I don’t know what people get from posting things like that. There was a huge house fire earlier this week in my town and someone posted photos on Facebook. There was really not any reason or need

weebleswobblebuttheydontfallover · 28/08/2026 21:06

I’m so sorry OP. Honestly I found it upsetting enough before you explained the exact circumstances and that it involved your godson. I don’t know why people don’t think.

AgnesX · 28/08/2026 21:05

I'm so sorry for you and your family.

NautilusLionfish · 28/08/2026 21:03

Have a heart. She is reaching out to a specific community' Doesnt mean she is not in touch with family. And her post is not dramatic at all

Yep. My DF dropped down dead earlier is year.
It was mentioned online in local FB groups before the police went to my mum to tell her what had happened.

RaraRachael · 28/08/2026 21:02

Yes @XenoBitchthat's what I'd do too. A former boss once told me, "We shouldn't expect that everyone is the same as us"

Seawolves · 28/08/2026 21:01

I am so sorry, no-one should have to ask twice for a video like that to be down.

A young mum collapsed in the street of our town. A woman was filming it all from her upstairs window providing a running commentary then posted it on the local FB page.
The 14yo son of collapsed woman found out when a friend alerted him to it.
Sadly she died.

How the hell can anyone think that's appropriate?

That is so upsetting. I just do not get it.
I have seen upsetting things happen in public, and the last thing I thought about was getting my phone out and filming it.
I just leave the area.

LakieLady · 28/08/2026 20:57

I'm so sorry, OP, both for your loss and that some people are so crass as to post something so traumatic. Vile behaviour.

I stopped using FB years ago, and I'm glad. It seems to cause more trouble than it's worse.

I’m so sorry OP.

unfortunately some people don’t stop to think about the impact of posting something like this, they simply want the attention it brings
