To ask people to think before they post

Grumpynan · 28/08/2026 20:37

After a very upsetting night and morning I am home again, having a cup of tea and scrolling facebook. On my local area page someone has posted a video of police activity taking place in the field across from their house. Yes it looks exciting it’s 11.30om and dark, there are 3 police cars, there’s shouting and a taser is heard, lots of crying and a clear shout of “the knife is dropped, he’s down” then silence then ‘where’s the ambulance “

at this point she does have the sense to stop recording, but she’s posted it, I asked for it to be removed and she posted it again 3 times !

the reason I’m upset, the reason I’m sicken that’s it’s there, and I have seen something I really didn’t want to.

that knife welding thug, was my 16year old godson, the person he wanted to hurt was himself, he called the police and told them he had cut himself, they responded. They tapered because he wouldn’t let go of the knife he didn’t want to die alone. Of course the shock made him drop it. But the damage was done.

my darling, so sweet, so loving but so troubled godson didn’t make it,

that recording of his cry will for ever haunt me.

what does she gain from posting it, ok maybe she doesn’t know the why the wherefore, she’s just relishing in the drama.

please people, please think before you post things like this,

I am so sorry this has happened. There is little or no thought or respect for other people's feelings these days. My condolences to you and your godson's family.

"rather than dramatic mumsnet posts about what you have seen on Facebook"
My God. Your nastiness has taken my breath away. This poor OP has had to watch the harrowing filming of her beloved Godson committing suicide because some random stranger filmed it and was idiotic enough to post it on FB - OP must be feeling traumatised beyond words - and all you can do is accuse her of 'dramatic' posts on mumsnet.
She can reach out for support wherever she likes thank you very much, and mumsnet can be a very supportive and understanding community (until someone like you comes along).
Your critical response to her sickens me and I have reported you to MNHQ for your callousness.

Her thread is titled AIBU- to ask people to think before they post?
Thats definitely something you should have done before commenting on this thread.

Give your head a wobble.

Im so sorry for your loss Grumpynan and other peoples actions that have made the terrible pain you are feeling worse.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 29/08/2026 01:03

That is awful. I would never record such a scene as I’m sure you would not either.

I am so sorry.

I am guilty of occasionally watching some videos that show people in a vulnerable staff, as most of us do, not such an extreme situation.

Like drug attacks acting out, fighting each other or arguing with a security guard with Benny hill background music, you get the jest.

It is worth remembering that it is always someone’s son or daughter. There is no such thing as privacy. Someone once sent me a video of a lady who has been hit with a sledgehammer by her stepson. I felt ill for days.

Foolish1984 · 29/08/2026 00:55

Yep I totally agree. When the air ambulance was in our local park, rushing a critical patient into the adjacent hospital, people were lined up, all filming it on their phones, smiling at the drama they were catching. One had gone live on TikTok 😡

Dontlletmedownbruce · 29/08/2026 00:45

People post these things because they are encouraged to do so by big tech who are the ones responsible for publishing it. Take up your issue with them, seriously, lodge a complaint or better still get a solicitor and sue them. If they keep allowing this to happen people will keep doing it.

VenusThighTrap · 29/08/2026 00:13

I’m so sorry for your loss OP, and dreadfully sorry for your Godsons parents. How heartbreaking.

these people have always existed - neighbourhood gossips. Now they have FB to satisfy their ghoulish need to be the first to know.

Frequency · 28/08/2026 23:57

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/08/2026 23:02

How would anyone know this who posted it? I expect they thought it was criminal activity.

What difference does it make? A person died. That is not something that ever needs to be recorded and posted to social media. It's sick and callous.

Had it not been OP's beautiful godson, it would have been someone else's loved one. The circumstances around the incident are irrelevant. They don't need to be plastered on social media for morbid entertainment and the pursuit of likes.

MulberryWedges · 28/08/2026 23:34

Let alone the unthinkableness of posting this online, who on earth would think to get their phone out and start filming such a distressing scene?
I'm so sorry for your loss OP. May your sweet Godson rest in peace now.

EnnuiEnnui · 28/08/2026 23:22

Oh God @Grumpynan I am so, so, very sorry. Truly. That is pure trauma. I haver to believe he is free of his torment now.

This woman - utter detritus.

Cafog · 28/08/2026 23:04

Im so sorry for your loss. Someone posted a video on YouTube of my relative getting pulled from the water in an accidental drowning. They were on the bridge above. It was so clear. They took it down but they fact it was even there made the national newspaper and my comments were used. None of us needed that. I hope you get an apology. Love to you. Also wtf is wrong with people to repost 3 more times after you asking them not to 😢

Minasama · 28/08/2026 22:57

I am so sorry - this is terrible to hear and a good lesson to anyone.

NotAnotherScarf · 28/08/2026 22:54

Sadly op, a lot of people think they are "citizen journalists" and film stuff rather than actually either fuck off or help. I see some really sad things on social media that should never be shared. However, the main stream media have been equally bad if not worse for many years. I still see in my head the picture of people crushed at Hillsborough in 1989 which any sane person would have not taken and got police to open the gates

MsPrufrockk · 28/08/2026 22:32

I'm so, so sorry x

Can you ask friends to report it to Facebook? I think that the more people report something, the more likely it is to be taken down.

Dingalingping · 28/08/2026 22:06

So sorry for the loss of your lovely and vulnerable godson. I also think it’s commendable to speak out about this, you will reach a wide and varied audience of readers. You did this with the permission of family - unlike the person who shared the video. Please ignore anyone who is speaking negatively. Do whatever brings you and the family a measure of comfort at a time where you must feel very helpless.

Sending hugs to you all while you navigate this tragic and very sad loss 💐

SquirrelGG · 28/08/2026 22:04

Ī am so sorry OP. Flowers This trend of filming everything and posting it on social media is just awful, no thought at all as to who it might upset.

commend you for reaching out and asking people to think before they post.

So tragic! I don’t have access to any of this level of SM, but when things are covered on national and international news, my thoughts,
as are the thoughts of many, are those of sympathy and condolences for those lives
lost and the family members.

There is so much that we don’t need to see.

Frequency · 28/08/2026 21:24

I'm sorry for your loss OP, and for what you had to see on FB.

I'd message the woman directly. Not to ask her to take it down, but to explain herself. Why did she feel the need to post it, and how did she think it would affect people like yourself and his family?

I doubt she would care or have any conscience at all unfortunately.
Of course it would be difficult if the shoe were on the other foot and someone did this to somebody she loved.

MidnightMusing5 · 28/08/2026 21:37

This is utterly heartbreaking 😭
I’m so very sorry for your loss. 💐 He was only a child 😞

So sorry, OP, this is dreadful and I totally agree with you. I know someone who found out her husband had killed himself in a public place, when she saw a FB post about the incident with his car in full view.

The awful incident with Perez Hilton - he who now desperately needs privacy but who has built his empire on celebrity gossip and being the first to get the scoop - might help bring an end to the awful “you heard it here first” culture.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 28/08/2026 21:35

@Grumpynan 💐I'm so sorry.
This is one of the dark sides of social media and I don't know how its ever going to resolve itself, particularly as many people have become so desensitized to even basic consideration and just want their next "like".

JumpBoyJump · 28/08/2026 21:29

Very sorry to you and his family, no one can understand what you are going through. The people that post these things for likes are sadly not going to listen to reason and keep doing it. The police have runs campaigns about having to race to houses unprepared with specialist officers when they see someone filming something to make sure they break the news first.

Yoi can post whatever you like here if it helps you and your family. Sorry people have been anything but supportive.

Please pass on our wishers to his family. We didn’t know about him, but now a lot more people knew he was a person who was loved
