To be loving earlier darker nights in my 50s

I used to crave the sun. I do still like it. But this year, for the first time ever, the darker evenings are already feeling comforting and calm. I’ve never had this feeling at this time of year before. I am looking forward to the cold fresh air, winter walks, the rain, and just breathing it all in.

Has anyone else felt like they suddenly like winter more as they’ve aged?

YABU - winter sucks
YANBU - winter is wonderful

I even like the rain. The only thing I don’t like is strong wind/gales. But give me a rainy morning on a fell and I’m a happy person. I wish my younger self had appreciated this more.

Yes!! Totally agree OP.
This summer has felt like it’s lasted for YEARS!
I’m loving the cosy rain and dark nights x

I’m also reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its dark subject matter is matching the weather. I’m so happy. I wish I had a local book club for winter evenings.

Have you thought about starting a local book club?

“Autumn passed thus. I saw, with surprise and grief, the leaves decay and fall, and nature again assume the barren and bleak appearance it had worn when I first beheld the woods and the lovely moon."

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

(I will stop now with the poetry and quotes.)

I go hiking at the weekends and listen to audio books. My favourites are Dracula or ghost stories while I walk through the fog. That feeling that anything can happen… until I get freaked out by a cow or something because I’m not paying attention.

I understand this. However, I’ve found I like to walk and run in the dark now. It feels like I own the space when it’s quiet and darker.

I garden, sea swim, hill climb and magnet fish, none of which are really compatible with the dark.

I do love walking in the country in the winter though. You see the bare bones of nature during the short, quiet days.

Love this line, thanks!

Love the dark evenings, the dark mornings, the rain when you’re walking, the puddles, the mist, the freshness of it all, the clothes - scarves, proper coats, good boots, gloves, the first morning when you can see your breath steaming, the greyness, the dullness, everything. It all starts when the children go back to school, you can feel their excitement in new shoes, new uniform, new class. Lovely food, hopefully good tv, and it’s just a more attractive season(s). Fewer people hanging around, most people just hurry to where they’re going. It’s more atmospheric.

Apart from driving on snow and ice, don’t like that.

Ok with dark mornings as long as we don't have to go anywhere.
A cuddle up rain battering off window and howling wind.

mondaytosunday · 28/08/2026 21:44

I love the nights getting darker. Autumn is my favourite time of year. Last week when it was the first time in months I could pull my very lightweight duvet over me was so nice!

Pistachiocake · 28/08/2026 21:56

I've been led to believe older people prefer warm weather as wet/cold is worse for aches. Obviously that might not apply to everyone, but a lot of peri/menopausal women on here say they have joint issues and doesn't warm weather help that?

canuckup · 28/08/2026 22:02

This is me 😅

I made a chili and an apple crumble today, lush

Norwaygirl · 28/08/2026 22:04

I already feel more relaxed and calmer now the nights are drawing in. September to December are the best four months of the year.

SquirrelGG · 28/08/2026 22:10

I'm in my late 60s and love the long summer evenings just as much as ever. We are coming out of winter and I can't wait for more hours of daylight.

Even though there seem to be so many winter lovers on MN I've rarely met any in real life.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 28/08/2026 22:17

I said exactly the same to DH earlier this evening.
with long days and hot, sunny weather I constantly feel that I should be out 'enjoying the weather' but as soon as cold / dark / wet evenings start I can just enjoy be warm and cosy indoors.
I also enjoy being outdoors - in all weathers - more in Autumn and Winter - I love the feeling of going out getting soaking wet and cold and coming back to warm up, would take that over being hot and sweaty anytime!
we had an beautiful garlicky Mac and cheese tonight 😋

Nope hate it It buggers up my knees and makes the ache and stiffen and people get boring and sit indoors in front of tv

Tend to spend time away each winter in warmer ckines

giddyboo · 28/08/2026 22:33

I love autumn always have and could cope with winter when younger because it meant going out, parties ,shopping etc. Everything like that seems to have gone now though. I now cannot stand the long ,dark cold months. Where it seemed to be more lit up when I was younger its now just staying in, rain and dark. I used to love the crisp sunny days but its just all bloody rain now.

BerryTwister · 28/08/2026 23:43

I don’t mind the cooler weather but I hate the dark evenings. I hate being at work and realising it’s dark outside, and that my whole day has gone. I hate the time pressure to get anything outdoor done before 4pm. I hate driving in the dark and being dazzled by headlights. And I hate not being able to dry my clothes on the washing line!

SnowFrogJelly · 29/08/2026 00:00

No

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2026 00:07

I love long light evenings, but morning is at a civilized time at the moment - not too late but not ridiculously early.
Temperatures mid teens to low twenties and cooler at night is perfect too.
I do like cold and crisp, but not cold and wet

Livingthebestlife · 29/08/2026 00:13

Personally I find dark evenings and rain and cold extremely depressing, I absolutely hate being confined indoors, love, love the outdoors in lovely warm bright days and evenings, nothing like sitting outside having meals and that warm feeling instead of fake heating and trying to put on layers to warm up and sitting indoors dressed like you're heading to Greenland ! Then all those winter colds and flus and aches and pains. No give me warm, bright evenings any day.

VenusThighTrap · 29/08/2026 00:19

There came a day that caught the summer, wrung its neck, plucked it, and ate it.

There came this day and ir was Autumn. Its mouth was wide, and red as a sunset. Its tail was an icicle.

Some Ted Hughes while we’re getting poetic! I’m more of a fan of Autumn. The colours and the kind of wistful summer’s gone feeling.

I'm much older than you and absolutely not.

Gallowayan · 29/08/2026 02:59

We have had an unusually hot summer and l have come accross as lot of posts expressing similar feelings.

I was a reading a moving to Scotland thread on hear earlier in which a lot of folk seemed open to the idea of moving further north to escape from the heat.

I like novelty so I'm enjoying the change of season. Autumn is lovely but too short.

Winter is ok up until January and then it's just grim and feels like forever until spring.
