Would you be annoyed by this or am I being unreasonable?

DH has bought something for the house without mentioning it to me and I am honestly a bit annoyed.

It was about £40 so its not like he's gone mad or anything but its something we absolutely did not need and I would have rather the money went towards other things tbh.

I only found out because the parcel turned up and when I asked what it was he said he'd ordered it a couple of days ago. I said I wish he'd mentioned it first and he said why, its hardly a big purchase and he doesn't ask me before buying things for himself.

I do see that point but I don't really think its the same when its something for the house? Especially when we've got other things coming up that we need to pay for.

I am not saying he needs to ask permission every time he spends money btw. If he wants to buy himself something with his own money then obviously thats different. But if its coming out of our joint account for something that is basically unnecessary then surely its reasonable to discuss it first?

He thinks I'm being controlling and making an issue out of nothing.

No. It's 17 pages long.....if you're that parsimonious to say what it was, it can't have been that important to begin with.

This is where we differ, my partner and I would both see that as wasteful both in terms of the finances and the resources gone in to make the product in the first place.

Consumerism is ruining this planet, this it's cheap so it's disposable is driving climate change. As a society we need to be thinking more about our purchases, about what is necessary and buying things designed to last. If more thought was given to purchases we as a nation would spend less, use less precious resources and commit less items to landfill every year.

Something is only a good deal, if you want it, need it, use it and it will last. We need to be making more conscious decisions about what we are buying to ensure we are buying and pushing manufacturers to build things that will last. A heated airer for £40 that does a bad job, will be left in the corner unused is not a better deal than one at £125 that does a good job and will be used for longer. I'd just want to know that it wasn't an impulse purchase and had been researched.

We go as far as talking through what we are wanting to buy with our parents too, I was talking to my mum last year about how we were looking for a new slow cooker as ours is too small for us now. She said they don't use theirs much anymore as it is too big. So we swapped slow cookers. We could have both bought new slow cookers and then sold out old ones but that 3 minute conversation took considerably less time and was free!

I'm starting to realize I need a heated airer in my life. Didn't realize they were a thing! <misses point of thread>

This is just turning into a much bigger deal than it needs to be.

It's a £40 heated airer. If they don't like it or use it, it can stuck on marketplace and sold. There's no need to for a massive debate and discussion.

Op, you do sound a bit controlling tbf. If you did all the laundry and this showed up, you'd have a right to feel miffed but in reality, he's spent £40 on something that he thinks will be helpful when he is doing laundry.
Would you feel the need to run a purchase like that by your partner?
I'd hate to have so little freedom that I couldn't purchase something that I thought would be helpful and that we could afford without a discussion.
I'm guessing you've heard the word 'controlling' from him before.

We don't get involved in the researching as such but just an awareness that the other is researching it and that it is going arrive at the house before it arrives at the house.

Take an ironing board the conversation might go..

This ironing board is useless, I'm going to look for another one

Ok, remember I get 3% at Argos through work

Thanks, I'll compare prices

I've found one in Argos, i can do click and collect or delivery.

If you do click and collect do you want me to pick it up as my boot is bigger and won't have the kids to juggle too?

If you could that would be great.

My partner ordered some wood the other day for a project. He got it delivered for a day I had planned to be at home most of the day. He let me know that it was going to be delivered and the time slot. He pinged me a message when we were going to be the next drop off so I could be prepared to answer the door and get it in. Had I been oblivious to this order and just had a knock on the door at 4pm to someone stacking up wood on the drive I would have been annoyed if I hadn't been told to expect it

In the OP case, all it would have taken for not to be annoyed is "I've been reading about heated airers, they are cheaper to run that the dryer, I've found one at a good price. If I order it now it will be delivered on Tuesday, we can look at selling/thrifting the none heated one, is that ok?"

Interesting, I would MUCH rather not have to be involved in researching the best clothes dryer (or wherever), and I’m happy when my husband takes initiative to get stuff done without involving me in the detail. If we both have a bit of autonomy it saves time on boring tasks.

OP hasn’t told us how her DH and she usually approach purchases, which is relevant in case their usual practice is more like yours (ie carefully discuss all purchases).

I’m still inclined to side with OP’s DH on this one: I think I’d feel stifled if I had to run getting a new ironing board, shoe rack (or whatever) past him.

We don't get involved in the researching as such but just an awareness that the other is researching it and that it is going arrive at the house before it arrives at the house.

You are being controlling and annoying

JEM61 · 30/08/2026 08:23

Bloody hell. I would be over the moon if my husband took this kind of initiative!! Especially if he does his fair share of the washing, prices of heating and tumble drying going up etc. And if you have a utility room, pop it in there (we don’t, small house and would still buy one!)

Mummamap · 30/08/2026 08:20

I’d be thrilled if my husband purchased something this useful to be honest.

RaginaPhalange · 30/08/2026 08:08

YABU it's £40.....

Pssedoffathis · 30/08/2026 07:57

So it’s a heated clothes aired. I actually purchased one for the house and didn’t consult anyone as I didn’t feel it was a necessary consult. I have also purchased an excercise bike, flights, saucepan sets and cushions without consult. DH has recently purchased a burger press, bedding set, coffee table all without discussion. We also don’t ave joint accounts, so if one of us wants to purchase something out of our left over money then that’s up to the purchase and no consult needed. I do think some of his spending is unecessary and I am sure he thinks the same about mine. When I was on mat leave I purchased paint and paintbrushes and painted the whole living room a completely different colour without asking him. I am not sure if our methods are usual but we are 20 years into the relationship and just kind of let each other be and do things as we please as long as it’s not harmful or actually out of order. If he wants to buy a burger press then really what’s the issue, if I buy a heated airer then that also isn’t any sort of issue.

Luckyforsome23 · 30/08/2026 07:39

Heated airers are great. We only have space for one airer and it is a heated one and can dry a load a day easily in winter. Never use the tumble drier.

TenThousandSpoons · 30/08/2026 07:13

Come back in a month. You will be in love with the heated airer and so pleased DH did this.

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 30/08/2026 07:11

This is not the hill you want to die on. This is not even worth the energy to argue over. Its £40, not £40,000.

Teddybear23 · 29/08/2026 23:30

I’d be annoyed but only because they are rubbish, I had one but got rid.

They’re not rubbish if you get a proper one with a cover that basically blasts heat around.

Ours was £40 off Amazon and can dry a load of laundry in two hours.

I think you get what you pay for tbh. I have a Lakeland one and it is absolutely fantastic. Very effective and efficient.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/08/2026 06:52

I’m afraid op, I would not like to live in a situation where such a purchase is even questioned, let alone get you annoyed. It would be like treading on egg shells all the time wondering what you’re going to get annoyed at next. It isn’t fair to treat adults like this. Heck, I wouldn’t even question what my kids of any age buy with their own money. It’s up to them. But the egg shells aside, it’s a thoroughly boring conversation to discuss. Like a previous poster said, I would rather be single than have to discuss/ask for permission for boring household purchases.
