Would you be annoyed by this or am I being unreasonable?

DH has bought something for the house without mentioning it to me and I am honestly a bit annoyed.

It was about £40 so its not like he's gone mad or anything but its something we absolutely did not need and I would have rather the money went towards other things tbh.

I only found out because the parcel turned up and when I asked what it was he said he'd ordered it a couple of days ago. I said I wish he'd mentioned it first and he said why, its hardly a big purchase and he doesn't ask me before buying things for himself.

I do see that point but I don't really think its the same when its something for the house? Especially when we've got other things coming up that we need to pay for.

I am not saying he needs to ask permission every time he spends money btw. If he wants to buy himself something with his own money then obviously thats different. But if its coming out of our joint account for something that is basically unnecessary then surely its reasonable to discuss it first?

He thinks I'm being controlling and making an issue out of nothing.

£40 on a decent heated airer is a bargain tbf.

Thought you were going to say something useless like a vase or something for the house which was really just for him.

YABu to get annoyed over this from a cost POV but also what it is.

If you are in poverty then I would see your point but it doesn’t sound like you are.

Nmiddleofnowhere · 28/08/2026 18:57

It was one of those big heated clothes airers 😅

We already have a normal airer and a tumble dryer so I just don't see why we needed another one tbh. He said it'll save on drying costs and that we'll use it loads over winter but I think he just saw it online and fancied it.

Its not even the thing itself really, its more that he just ordered it without mentioning it.

It'll save on the cost of a tumble drier so really I don't see the problem. We have the £100 one ftom Lakeland and is amazing. Not a big issue really, think you're over reacting

Justchillinhere · 31/08/2026 18:48

I agree with him! every purchase you make from your joint account isn't based on you asking your DH if it's ok to buy something.

Lvpxl · 31/08/2026 18:44

I wish my partner would order a heated airer. Instead he ordered a vax spot wash… over a year ago. Which has sat in the box ever since. Literally, unopened. Also, if we complained or got annoyed every time either of us made an ‘unnecessary’ purchase, we probably wouldn’t ever speak to each other. I’d let it go.

Do you double check with him before you buy anything for the house?
this all does sound about controlling tbh it’s his money just as much as it is yours

Jubee78 · 31/08/2026 18:09

Personally I love my heated aired, it doesn’t take up anymore space that a normal one, and if you buy the cover too the washing dries so quickly!! For context I also have 3 normal airers and a tumble drier.

BeWittyRobin · 31/08/2026 18:06

Oh goodness I think I must piss my husband off monthly with purchases for the ‘house’ and I never consult him. As long as it’s nothing massively expensive and we aren’t struggling I reckon it’s fair game is it not 🙈🤣. But in all seriousness I don’t think it’s a ridiculously stupid buy not one to die on your sword for. I mean it was just the other day I bought some new flooring for our daughters room as it was a bargain and he strictly told me no laminate wood flooring upstairs this time last year as it will be cold in winter so I bought a rug to solve that problem 🤣. In all honesty my friend has one of those from dunelm and she swears by it Xx

Lavenderflower · 31/08/2026 18:02

I don’t think there anything wrong with what he purchased. You sound controlling.

Letty186 · 31/08/2026 17:29

Aria999 · 30/08/2026 12:49

I'm starting to realize I need a heated airer in my life. Didn't realize they were a thing! <misses point of thread>

Oh you really do, wouldn’t be without ours. Less use of the tumble drier and can be used as an ordinary airer if heat not needed …. Gets used all the time in winter when can’t hang clothes outside on the line.

OP I do think your DH can buy something for £40 that he thinks could be useful in the house without having to to ask ….

I think you’re being unreasonable over £40.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 31/08/2026 17:16

You're pissed off because your husband spent £40? Unless you are deep in debt then yes, you are controlling and unreasonable. Surely an adult can spend £40 of their earned income on whatever they want?

moderate · 31/08/2026 17:14

@Nmiddleofnowhere Have you ever purchased something without running it past him first?

DoggerelBank · 31/08/2026 11:49

Haha. I had a similar reaction when my husband bought one. Just ... why. Waste of electricity if we use it, waste of space if we don't. We use it approx once a year if that.

Zerosleep · 31/08/2026 11:40

I don’t see the issue tbh, it’s hardly a huge purchase.

Eurovisionwatcherbecauselol · 31/08/2026 11:33

Wow... Are you his mother? Or lover?

Aria999 · 30/08/2026 18:27

lol @Superscientist you could fit two of 16 year old me into my current clothes 😂 and probably still need a belt...

Superscientist · 30/08/2026 17:19

It really isn't but we buy very little and what we do buy lasts. We have been together 20 years and still have furniture and things that we bought 15 years ago as we bought carefully, considerately and the best we could afford at the time. We don't buy into fashions so don't have a load of gadgets and gizmos that are used for 4 months and never again.

I have clothes I bought as a 16 year old that I still wear. Rather than buy new we repair until we can't, we have replaced the motor in our vacuum cleaner, a pump in our dishwasher to avoid unnecessary waste. When our dishwasher did permanently break with removed as much as could easily be removed to sell as spares.

Tap Warehouse did a survey in 2020 and found that the homes in the UK have nearly £800 worth of kitchen and lifestyle gadgets that are not used and depending on the item 10-30% had never been used. Those little £40 add up as well as the space items take up.

We are a collective we jointly live in our space and we have equal say on how the space and our finances are used. The length of time it takes to say "I'm looking into this what do you think?" Vs just buying it, finding it's not fixing the problem you thought you had and then listing it for resale is tiny. As well as losing half of its value, the postage /time to go and collect it. We certainly buy less since we moved to a semi rural area and the shops are now a 30 minute drive away.

It's not like it's extra effort either, aside from when at work we spend all of the rest of our time together, it slots into conversation in between do you want a cup of tea and what shall we make for dinner.

Good for you 🙄

Blimey - I'm glad I don't live in your household. What a load of stress and faff over nothing.

If someone bought me a big heated clothes drier Id be over the moon ! Our washing line outside is falling to bits. Husband wants a new line to thread through it.....

No. It's 17 pages long.....if you're that parsimonious to say what it was, it can't have been that important to begin with.

You don't have to read the whole thread. In future it might be helpful to know that the see all button at the top of the thread shows all of the OPs posts. In this case she's replied 3 times, so it wouldn't have taken you long to read her replies.

A very sensible purchase, much cheaper to use than a tumble dryer.

YABU. £40 is nothing.

What would your cut off point be? £20? £10? 50p?

Edited

Surely that depends on one's financial situation? I can't afford to spend £40 on a non-essential and many others are in the same boat

Poppyfie1ds · 30/08/2026 16:32

This does sound very controlling. Chill out. It didn’t cost a fortune and it is a useful bit of kit to be fair. He is allowed to make small unanimous decisions about the house and finances too. Not everything has to go to a vote.

It sounds like you were expecting him to ask permission. You are both adults and unless he is filling the house buying ‘stuff’ every week or finances are in a dire state, perhaps you should treat him like an adult.
