[I categorically refuse to put the word ‘lighthearted’ in the title to indicate that Im not actually traumatised. Also because saying this post is lighthearted is just as facile as holding a little bus or building a Lego haus to illustrate my point.
See below.]

I realise that I don’t need to follow Mr B on instagram but I do and I’m feeling deeply patronised:

First a little toy bus (talking about buses innit), then a Lego house (building more Lego houses to amuse the homeless), a bit of cosplay by dressing up as a Sainsbury’s man of the people (to show that you can work at Sainsbury's and a sexy uniform is thrown in) and now… throwing a cowboy hat at the camera/phone to illustrate that cowboy builders are …cowboys.

Make it stop.

Today's revelation is that AB's Secretary of State for Energy sends her three children to fee-paying schools! Do as we say rather than do as we do!

So she's not supposed to do the best for her kids to appease a bunch of strangers? Most people would use fee paying schools if they could afford it and, as a teacher in a school with no money, high sen and poor parenting and behaviour to deal with, I wouldn't blame them.

Well to be honest I disagree I think his TikTok/Social media figures may show viewing figures but that does not mean they are being viewed favourably. To be perfectly honest I am not interested in how many hits he gets. I am only interested in how he will get economic growth, unemployment down especially Neets, increase in defence spending, tax, cost of living. Maybe we just have different ideas of what the PM should be actually doing. Throwing a cowboy hat on a video is definitely not something I would endear to.

But we don’t need to agree to disagree on whether the content is being viewed favourably or not because there’s objective evidence that it is. The article I’ve linked to from LBC doesn’t just show viewing figures, it shows extensive analysis of how people engage with Andy Burnham’s content - including the ratio of positive to negative comments etc etc. At the moment, that analysis shows that right now compared to other high profile political leaders (including Keir Starmer, Nigel Farage, Kemi Bandenboch, and Zack Polanski - so this isn’t party political) Andy Burnham’s content is being viewed exceptionally favourably.

I also absolutely agree that what matters is that the Prime Minister drives economic growth, gets unemployment down - especially for NEETs and tackles the cost of living.

I guess where we may disagree is whether a Prime Minister spending ten minutes a day recording content (which is what it takes, before his team package the content for social media) is a good use of his time. I guess I think it is, if it’s effectively communicating to a mass audience, and getting people engaged and on board, because a Prime Minister needs that kind of popular buy in in order to get things done.

Andy has important issues to deal with such as Islamophobia, transphobia, Gaza and climate change. You can't expect him to actually deal with anything here in the UK can you?

I’m sure he could get the busses in Gaza up and running.

MsGreying · 29/08/2026 14:49

How much does all his social media cost?

How much did he spend as Gt Manchester mayor?

The country is a joke so I don't mind Andy putting a bit of humour into our daily lives. At least he's trying to make things better, what are any of you doing?

How can he inject some sense of humour when he doesn’t have any?

summater · 29/08/2026 14:30

Can't really tell what he will be like, he has barely been to work yet. A trip round the 'North' and doing something similar to the John Lewis's apps 12 days of Christmas which unfortunately are always disappointing. Maybe we will see when Parliament reopens again and down to the proper work

Most comments on his socials ARE positive. Perhaps you're looking at comments on right wing reposts?

He's only been PM for a few weeks whilst parliament has been on break. Yet he's already announced plans to end rough sleeping, an overhaul of social care and secondary education, plans to shift power out of Westminster, as well as several concrete ways households will save money.

Yet that's not enough, because he wears a black tshirt and spends a few minutes a day filming content? The man could literally walk on water and people would be complaining that he doesn't know how to swim.

Sorry, he is PM of this country now. We have riots, no economic growth, threats from Russia, unemployment up, Cost of living up.

Rough sleeping? That rose in Manchester under his watch! Overhaul of social care and secondary education?? He has made no concrete plans for social care, because he doesn’t know where the money will come from. Education, guess what again, we already have courses for pupils who wish to follow alternative curriculum routes? Shift the power from Westminister? Well London provides the highest fiscal contribution so not sure that is a good idea, I say that as a Mancunian too. Which concrete ways has he saved any households money?

Look at his cabinet, Haigh, convicted fraudster, Reynolds, said he was a solicitor, he is not, Rayner tax avoidance, if she cannot work out her own tax she is not fit to be a minister. You may think he walks in water but unfortunately I do not.

Maybe a mini Ken in hard hat head to toe hi vis to illustrate beneficial tax arrangements for toys who wear hi vis…

I can't believe I'm longing for Starmer back!

Thought that might happen.

Not aiming that at you in particular. But how long before the Great British Public and the idiot crowd they elected in Westminster tire of this particular PM and start whining they want another one.

Worrall20 · 29/08/2026 13:52

Visiblyabove25 · 29/08/2026 11:32

But the thing is, the actual data does show that not only is his online reach massive, but that the comments and engagement are increasingly positive. This analysis is from LBC: https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/andy-burnham-has-been-crowned-britains-first-tiktok-pm-5Hjdgbw_2/

You probably are seeing lots of negative comments - that’s because social media algorithms amplify conflict. The engagement in politician’s comments in general
is almost always net negative: Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenboch and Nigel Farage all regularly register below -20%. In comparison, the analysis of the comments on Andy Burnham’s social media showed net sentiment is -3%. That’s genuinely remarkable for a high profile politician.

Andy Burnham’s social media content might not be for you, but objectively it’s a really, really good social media strategy so far.
I guess the big questions are around how long he can keep it up before it wears thin. We’ll see!

He comes across as a cheesy salesman trying to shift a poor quality product.

It will only get interesting when the budget comes out.

WallowingInMud · 29/08/2026 12:12

Thanks for sharing that article @Visiblyabove25

I completely understand that Andy is reaching a new audience and communicating his policies better than before. I commend that. So many people in so many walks of life that should require these skills are absolutely useless at effective communication. There’s a lot to be pleased about.

However I‘m very sad to learn that this simplistic content is playing so well to the politically disenfranchised youth of our country. It fills me with sadness. They deserve better.

I will watch with interest to see how Andy tackles serious issues in a jocular, entertaining and upbeat manner. He’s not going to be able to use Rusholme Ruffians, noble tune that it is, as the soundtrack for everything after all.

Well, yes that’s true, I don’t see how they can measure that - other than I guess considering it as a factor if they start to see a fall in Andy Burnham’s personal popularity and approval ratings, which obviously has very much not happened yet.

Actually, that’s a really good point about parody accounts etc and how well they do, and what that says about how people see a politician.

I found the LBC article genuinely fascinating in terms of how they analyse the social media engagement and reach and judge a politician’s success, but I’m sure there’s much more detailed analysis available too.

Really, that is very strange, because most comments on his socials are not overwhelmingly positive? Oh maybe they are bots? But yes let’s have a PM who tinkers on TikTok, strums his favourite Smith song in a war zone, plays with his Lego buses, dressed in his rather favourite black t-shirt! 😂😂 Whilst in the mean time, we have no economic growth, threats by Russia, towns rioting, but hey ho let’s be grateful for his TikTok or social media😳😳

Yes that’s one way. Although SM can be assessed and general information can come back.

I don’t follow AB but did see someone take the p which then got supporting scathing comments. So I guess it’s all part of what AB is building as his brand too.

Andy Burnham has been crowned Britain’s first TikTok PM, but do the numbers back it up? | LBC

Andy Burnham’s first few weeks as Prime Minister has been defined by not what he has done, but by how he has communicated.

So I'm nowhere near the "card carrying" supporter of Labour level, but equally I vote tactically in my area to keep the Tories out (Labour has no hope here unfortunately) and to be honest I am genuinely afraid of reform getting into power, although I don't think we've fallen so low as to ever let them get a majority, even being part of a coalition is concerning. Power hungry men like Farage are littered throughout our history books and yet somehow we don't seem to have learnt!
But anyway, I actually like AB as a person, he seems like he's one of the more normal, down to earth politicians. Now, I'm sure a lot of that is for show, but still he seems a laugh. Now whether or not he's going to be a good prime minister is another story. I really hope he is, because as you say, to have any hope of recovering the country from the Tories mess, Labour need at least two terms.
Now I agree that AB's SM is a bit patriotic to me, an adult with an average understanding of politics, however I can appreciate that his SM posts are not being put there for my benefit. My teens, one of whom will be old enough to vote in the next general election, watch his videos because they are not as boring as normal politician videos. I also work with many young people (majority <21) and this is the first time in years I have heard them talking about politics. He is reaching his intended audience - young people.
