AIBU sleeping arrangement

I’m visiting my parents this weekend, as are my 2 sisters (we’re all adults 23,29 and 32). I’m bringing my husband, sisters are going alone. I’m currently 19 weeks pregnant with twins, this is relevant.
all the bedrooms have a single bed in them, prior to pregnancy id just share with my husband and we’d have a bad nights sleep but get over it. Now im pregnant sleeping is a bit more uncomfortable and I need a pillow under my belly etc. so someone has to sleep on the sofa. I can’t make hubby sleep on the sofa because the living room is the walk way through to the kitchen so he’d have no privacy. So the options are for pregnant me or my sisters to go on the sofa. I’ve asked both my sisters if they’d give their bed up for me, they’ve both said no. My one sister even had a tantrum over it and said she just won’t visit if I’m going to take “her” bed (bear in mind she hasn’t lived at my parents house for 7 years).
I’m feeling a little disappointed in my sisters and that they wouldn’t let their pregnant sister have a bed for a weekend. My parents have offered their bed to my husband and I as a result but it doesn’t seem fair as they are both older and need the bed too.
Am I being unreasonable expecting someone to give up a bed for me? I would never ask at any other time in my life, it’s just one weekend during my pregnancy.

it was a 3 bed house, then a wall was put up to make 4 bedrooms, making 3 of the bedrooms very small…
its really not that hard to believe, why would I lie?

This makes sense now.

yeah shame about your sisters, but selfish people don’t change just because you do. Sad but just log it and don’t do them any similar favours. It’s an awful way to live but if it’s not reciprocal then it doesn’t work.

i get your reasoning op, with your husband being a guest. And I also get that as a pregnant woman you should have a bed.

It’s too small! Its a tiny box room, otherwise we’d absolutely do something like that

Why can’t you have one of the other larger rooms? Surely one of those three must have sufficient space for a single mattress? Even our tiny box room could (and did) regularly fit a second mattress in when kids slept over.

Mirandawrongs · 28/08/2026 18:46

Are you driving there?
do your parents have a drive?
drop the seats and sleep in it, sounds like it’ll be bigger than your old room.
lots of blankets and pillows, it’ll be cosy.

£20 air mattress on the floor of your room for the husband with you on the proper single bed.

Edited

Solved.

Well quite. Don’t go then. The idea of a woman pregnant with twins sleeping on the sofa is insane. Or just pay for a hotel if you really want to go - if it isn’t a priority then don’t.

If you read OP's posts you'll see that she's now sleeping on a mattress in the lounge.

leaving the sofa free for any unexpected guests :)

Russethouse · 28/08/2026 18:40

Perhaps the parents have realised that things will different going forward, the author is having twins - if visiting is difficult now, it’s not going to get any easier . An air bed would easily and cheaply solve the problem , but it’s a temporary solution .

Ponoka7 · 28/08/2026 18:35

I'm probably a similar age to the OP's parents, which means I get a decent nights sleep on the sofa. So the OP and DH should have taken the parent's bed and let one of them go on the sofa. The OP just wanted her own way and for her sister to have the sofa.

@Burnhamsmascara if you are putting up a partion wall and using it for an additional family bedroom, rather than renting/selling, there doesn't need to be a window and the building regs are minimal.

When the bedroom tax was being brought in, posters were saying how children don't need their own rooms, without taking into account how small some of the, turn of the century, two-up-two-down terraces in mining/industrial towns are. My DD has moved to a three bedroom, but there wouldn't be space for a air mattress. When they were built, people had two/three changes of clothes and one would be drying.

TheSandgroper · 28/08/2026 10:17

And shame upon your parents for not standing up to their daughter when another daughter is in need.

I wouldn’t ever be forgetting.

Did they decide to get pregnant?
OP has made a choice to get pregnant and it’s on her to deal with the consequences. She’s being a brat.
would it be kind to offer up a bed? Of course. But OP is being entitled and a bit pathetic

it's not her babies. Next visit it will be "one sister must sleep on sofa because me, DH and the only-twins-in-the-universe must have your room" etc ad infinitum

DH can sleep on the sofa, or he can stay home, or you can both stay in a hotel.

If the house can't accommodate this many people without someone going on the sofa now, no way it can take them all plus two children.

Hotel sounds like the only option moving forward but OP says that's not affordable, so I guess this is the last ever overnight family gathering at this place.

SockPlant · 28/08/2026 18:27

PopcornKitten · 28/08/2026 10:19

Your sister is being very unkind. Obviously you should have a bed.
I think you should be in a bedroom with your DH. If that needs to be on the floor for him then so be it. I wouldn’t expect him to sleep in public at the in laws.
Tbh, when we go places where space is tight- we book a hotel. Much more comfortable and no one in the front room.

i planned to visit as its a bank holiday weekend so there’s more time, I wanted to go by myself for a week but I can’t drive due to fainting related to my pregnancy so hubby is coming too as he can drive!
as people need every little detail apparently, there is also a close family member who is unwell in hospital so I’m waiting to see them. So the trip is essential and it’s essential that both my husband and i go…

I didn’t realise how much detail I’d have to give, I honestly thought this was a boring post and wouldn’t get much interaction, but you mums are very invested 😂

im aware that in the future I won’t be able to stay at my parents, that really isn’t what this post was about x

Can be drive
Visit relative at hospital and pick you back up again in a few days?
How far is it?

All right, job's fucked. She'll have to stay home.

OP's parents are not happy for him to sleep on the sofa, and I don't think anyone has actually asked DH what he thinks.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 28/08/2026 18:19

There’s a really simple solution your husband doesn’t go. Unless you’re about to pop why does he need to go when your sisters are going on own.

another simple solution buy a blow up bed for the weekend and put it in your bedroom for him to sleep on.

Or he sleeps in living room.your all family he don’t need privacy for a weekend. Just make sure he’s got some pjs.

MrsKateColumbo · 28/08/2026 18:16

I think OP's post is less about logistics and more about the dynamics in the sibling relationship. This is just the sort of petty squabble siblings live for 🤣🤣

Sobriety78 · 28/08/2026 18:15

How bad is the sofa to sleep on? I sleep on ours a couple of times most weeks due to health issues and its quite comfortable.
Would it be any worse than sleeping in a single bed for you?
Is your childhood bed really that much better?

saffy2 · 28/08/2026 18:15

i would put husband on the sofa, or probably what I’d do is bring a single airbed/self inflating mattress for him. And he can just sleep on the floor in my room.
i wouldn’t ask anyone else to give up their bed in this situation.

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 28/08/2026 18:13

Why dont you just go seen as though no other partners are?
Make it a family thing?

DressOrSkirt · 28/08/2026 18:13

redskyAtNigh · 28/08/2026 18:03

OP's parents are not happy for him to sleep on the sofa, and I don't think anyone has actually asked DH what he thinks.

If only the parents are hosts then all the sisters are guests and couldn't possibly sleep on the sofa.
If the sisters are hosts too then they should get equal say in how they host.

OP has created a weird "guest" rule that means she should get what she wants. Her sister's shouldn't question it because they aren't hosts, but also can't avail of it because they aren't guests.

OPs creation and implementation of this rule puts her in position of host though.

Ilovemyshed · 28/08/2026 18:12

Or book a premier inn 🤷🏽‍♀️

NewHere83 · 28/08/2026 18:12

nomas · 28/08/2026 17:59

I don’t understand how the rooms fit camping beds but not a single inflatable mattress.

OP's parents live in a paradox

Ilovemyshed · 28/08/2026 18:12

Just take a single airbed and share a room with your husband

Ljzjta · 28/08/2026 18:11

I would leave your DH at home and go and see your parents and sisters alone. This sounds like the most easier option, other than a cheap hotel room.

Sirzy · 28/08/2026 18:10

Let’s not forget the sisters are also travelling to see a very ill relative so it’s not unreasonable of them to want to sleep in a bed and get as much sleep as possible is it? I wouldn’t give up a bed for an able bodied adult in the same situation

Wadsworthy · 28/08/2026 18:10

im not putting my husband above them in anyway, I’m just trying to make sure he feels welcome and has a private space

But you are @strawberrylemons .

You are unilaterally making a decision about your husband with no respect for anyone else in your family.

Why does your DH deserve a private space but one of your sisters doesn't?

Why is it your decision about what makes your DH "welcome"?
