AIBU sleeping arrangement

I’m visiting my parents this weekend, as are my 2 sisters (we’re all adults 23,29 and 32). I’m bringing my husband, sisters are going alone. I’m currently 19 weeks pregnant with twins, this is relevant.
all the bedrooms have a single bed in them, prior to pregnancy id just share with my husband and we’d have a bad nights sleep but get over it. Now im pregnant sleeping is a bit more uncomfortable and I need a pillow under my belly etc. so someone has to sleep on the sofa. I can’t make hubby sleep on the sofa because the living room is the walk way through to the kitchen so he’d have no privacy. So the options are for pregnant me or my sisters to go on the sofa. I’ve asked both my sisters if they’d give their bed up for me, they’ve both said no. My one sister even had a tantrum over it and said she just won’t visit if I’m going to take “her” bed (bear in mind she hasn’t lived at my parents house for 7 years).
I’m feeling a little disappointed in my sisters and that they wouldn’t let their pregnant sister have a bed for a weekend. My parents have offered their bed to my husband and I as a result but it doesn’t seem fair as they are both older and need the bed too.
Am I being unreasonable expecting someone to give up a bed for me? I would never ask at any other time in my life, it’s just one weekend during my pregnancy.

i know this, which is why I wanted to visit now so I can get some time in with everyone, I’m very aware I won’t be able to visit the family home in the same way once the twins are here. I’m aware I can’t spend Christmases etc there in the future. I’m accepting that it’s not an option for us…

So your only 2 options are to accept that your DH will have to sleep on the sofa or you go another weekend. It really doesn’t need to be this difficult.

Ophy83 · 28/08/2026 11:54

I think you should check whether your DH would actually care about privacy. If he doesn't there's no issue. If he does could you rig up a screen? Otherwise you'll have to accept your mum's offer if thd double bed.

Bloatstoat · 28/08/2026 11:51

I don't think it's quite that, lots of us have lived or currently live in houses with very small rooms. It is unusual I would think for a 4 bed house to have 1 double room and 3 rooms that don't more than a single bed, with no space for anyone to fit on the floor. You've mentioned your parents extended to build an extra room (and also I think that they could 'give up a bathroom' to extend a bedroom?) which suggests the layout might be unusual with 3 long thin bedrooms, 1 double room and a bathroom which could be used to extend a bedroom (and presumably another bathroom elsewhere if you could give up the upstairs one for a bedroom?) I don't think most people are being naive or judgemental, if you had started by saying 'my parents house is an unusual room set up with 3 long thin single rooms that have a single bed and no floor space' people wouldn't have made suggestions about sleeping on the floor, which in a lot of houses, even small ones, would be possible in at least one of the single rooms, with moving out other furniture.

Also I would have been VERY envious of anyone with a room of their own, even a Harry Potter style cupboard growing up, I don't think it sounds a particularly poor tiny house!

watermybegonias · 28/08/2026 11:53

Better make the best of it now, as they certainly won't be able to accommodate you, your husband and twins.

redskyAtNigh · 28/08/2026 11:53

Summary of options and comment on them

  1. Get a hotel (too expensive)
  2. don't all come at the same time (probably long term solution)
  3. Airbed on floor (not enough space in any of the bedrooms)
  4. Duvets/pillows on floor for a makeshift bed (still not enough space in any bedrooms?)
  5. Tent in garden
  6. Ask a neighbour/friend to put one person up (surely you must know someone locally if this was your childhood home?)
  7. DH sleeps on the sofa (or airbed on lounge floor) and you agree ground rules such as when everyone else goes to bed and when they get up in the morning so DH can scuttle into OP's bedroom if he feels embarrassed)
  8. one of the sisters sleeps on the sofa (OP's preferred solution, although I can see from sister's perspective this means everyone bending over backwards for OP)
  9. DH doesn't come (don't think that's had a comment)

As a side note, please can you start another thread about storage solutions in a family with 3 children and absolutely no space? i suspect you must have some great ideas to share.

Comeondoreen · 28/08/2026 11:51

Tbh I’m not sure I know a single man in my family or circle of friends who would let a woman take the sofa so he could have a bed. Are you sure your husband would even want you to be having this argument on his behalf? Surely he’ll be mortified when he finds out?

Kalanthe · 28/08/2026 11:51

Your husband should sleep in your room on a mattress on the floor. It's a sacrifice to sleep on the sofa and no privacy and discomfort would apply to your sisters too

Bloatstoat · 28/08/2026 11:51

strawberrylemons · 28/08/2026 11:26

it really is! I’m amazed by how many people think I’m lying about the size of the bedrooms, they can’t believe someone would live in such a poor tiny house 😂 I always thought because we had 4 bedrooms that we were posh but apparently not compared to people here haha
really makes you feel good about yourself when people question why you can’t simply have a bigger room or just stay in a hotel

No actually, he’s coming because I’m unable to drive due to being unwell in my pregnancy, I actually wanted to spend a week at my parents but have been unable to drive so he’s offered to take me and spend some time with them.
I’m not looking for attention, I’ve actually not made a fuss out of this with my family, I asked the question and was told no. That’s all the drama there is.
But thank you for your input

I only popped on here to join a weight-loss support board yesterday, I never use mumsnet otherwise, and I see why. Some people are angry, bat💩 bananas, permanently online, permanently outraged. OP, as I suggested, let hubby take the sofa and disregard any of the mean spiritedness on here. Enjoy your visit and I hope you're feeling better over the rest of your pregnancy. Side note, highly recommended hypnobirthing lessons/course if that is something you've not looked at yet. Learning about the physiology and autonomy of birth made my births the best experiences of my life and that was with medical conditions with my pregnancies.

Edited to add: the weight loss boards have been lovely, not slating everyone on mumsnet!

Why doesn’t he drop you one weekend and collect you the next? Then you get a week with your family as planned and he doesn’t have to sleep there at all. Will both your sisters be there both weekends and during the week? They don’t live there, do they? Maybe there will be a free bedroom the weekend he collects you for him to spend a night it?

So you want your sisters to be put out so "hubby" isn't? Don't be one of those women.

You've outgrown your childhood bedroom a few months earlier than you thought. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 28/08/2026 11:40

If you can't afford a hotel for one night (and a b&b or guest house may be cheaper) how on earth are you going to afford twins?

If you really can't afford it, then don't go. You and husband go on another weekend when the house isn't so full.

This is clearly going to be a thread that just goes round in circles, however.

I can absolutely afford to have my children. I’m not completely stupid and reckless, I don’t want to spend money on a hotel when I don’t need to, all my money is going towards my mat leave, so right now I can’t afford it.
I could just not visit my parents of course, but there’s other reasons I’m visiting them, I’m choosing to not share that here.

yes of course this is going to go round, I didn’t expect such a big response to something so minor, people have really got themselves upset about this, I think other people are more upset than I am at this point 😂

Kadiofakit · 28/08/2026 11:48

I think you are setting yourself up for future dramas here by asking your sisters to move. We have no family where we live. When visiting my dad who lived in a small flat, we either stayed with friends or hotels. At Christmas when we visit the inlaws who have recently downsized, our kids (late teens) stay with inlaws and me and husband stays with his sister. There just isn't room for everyone in the same house.

I have read through the thread but you don't seem to have answered what the trip is for, is it essential for your husband to come? What will happen when your sister have husbands/partners and all want to stay

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 28/08/2026 11:45

Any reason you cant sleep on the sofa or on an inflatable mattress in the living room, with cushions etc for comfort?. I often sleep on the sofa or floor when i have pain.

Comeondoreen · 28/08/2026 11:44

He’s your husband for crying out loud! He’s hardly a guest. He’s a part of your family.

In this situation my husband would just sleep on the sofa - he might not LOVE his mother in law walking through but it is really not a big deal and he’s a grown man ffs.

or, tbh, if he really felt uncomfortable being in the living room, he’d just sleep on the floor in my room.

there HAS to be room on the floor alongside your bed for an adult to lie on the floor surely? Stick a roll mat down and some cushions, job done. Again, we are talking about a grown adult able bodied man, yes?

atamlin · 28/08/2026 11:44

you sleep on the sofa or air mattress in living room? Don’t make your issue everyone else’s issue.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 28/08/2026 11:44

Actually, bollocks, @strawberrylemons. You can afford a hotel. Your husband got an inheritance and you're using that to do up an old house. Don't tell me there isn't £200 for two nights for a cheap hotel.

Unless you've discovered that your husband has indeed poured all of that inheritance to prop up his company which isn't doing well, in which case where he sleeps this weekend really is the least of your worries.

strawberrylemons · 28/08/2026 11:44

Merrymoonage · 28/08/2026 11:41

So when you visit with children how will you and the twins fit in any of the single rooms if they can’t even fit a single mattress on the floor?
It sounds like this trip is the least of your worries.
You need to come up with a new solution for visiting going forward surely?

i know this, which is why I wanted to visit now so I can get some time in with everyone, I’m very aware I won’t be able to visit the family home in the same way once the twins are here. I’m aware I can’t spend Christmases etc there in the future. I’m accepting that it’s not an option for us…

So find a middle ground. Instead of a week, go for a weekend. DH sleeps on the sofa in the less private and perfect circumstances that happen when you visit family sometimes. Sometimes you just make it work. Or accept your visiting for the night days are over if you can't get a hotel.

AllSlugsAreBastards · 28/08/2026 11:42

DH on the sofa - might not be the greatest situation but it really won't hurt for a night or two.

FirmSnake · 28/08/2026 11:42

Stay in a hotel or dont visit all at once. You're obviously going to need a different solution once babies are born, and when you sisters partner up too. Don't create drama over a very temporary solution to a long term issue.

Maybe her mother will do like mine and just ban them from staying due to space.

He hasnt refused, not at all, I’ve made that decision for him. I refuse to let a guest, in the family home, sleep on the sofa. Yes he’s my husband and “he’s family” but he isn’t super close to my family, it’s not his home, he deserves a private space and I feel the same when my brother in law visits, he’s made comfortable too.
yes to some people this seems like I’m being difficult but making guests feel welcome is so important to me, I won’t argue it anymore.

Then you’ll have to sleep on the sofa. Or swap with him when everyone has gone to bed. Personally I’d be pretty pissed off if my sibling expected me to give up my room for a fully functioning adult.
